Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 1st April 2008, 9:29am
Weather conditions: Cloud/Snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good to have Winter back with snow falling since yesterday and about 10cm of dry powder on the car in Echoland this morning. With the snow however came howling winds all night which are still blowing hard meaning no gondolas running this morning and very limited lift access with only the Nakiyama lifts running at Happo, the Toomi Sky 4 lift at Goryu and the bottom half of Tsugaike operating. Wind-affected slopes will not have received a lot of snow but lee-slopes and under trees etc. would have received some good accumulation. When the weather clears and the gondolas start moving it would be nice to be first in line...but at this stage its hard to know if it'll be today. Base depths to be updated when things settled down though due to the wind there probably hasn't been a significant increase.

Backcountry travel advisory:

We're seeing real spring conditions with high fluctuations in temperature reaching to around 10 on the plus extreme and plunging down into the negatives at the other. Thursday night saw the temperature drop and snow down to the valley for the first time in a while which was repeated Friday afternoon and through Friday night. Monday night we had another fairly decent snowfall and then last night we received another 20-30 cms. This fresh snow is sitting on the old sliding pack on a mixture of crust and melt-freeze and fresh snow layers and will not have bonded. Strong winds last night means lee-slopes will be moderately loaded.

There are a lot of protruding rocks, gaping holes, big dirt patches etc. up to fairly high on the mountain, especially on solar aspects, that have received a covering of snow but be very careful if travelling down these. Northern Aspects haven't received quite the hammering but warm temperatures have seen a lot of deprecation of the snow pack, rocks will be protruding, holes and cracks will be forming and fluctuating temperatures will have created crust and melt freeze conditions with fresh snow sitting on top. Be extremely careful and scope any slopes well in advance before entering any off-piste areas. Conditions are extreme and travel in the backcountry is not recommended today.

Yuzawa Now!

Tuesday 1st April 2008, 10:11am
Weather conditions: Rain/sleet/snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A dusting of snow at town level overnight, perhaps not as much as we are hoping for. Having said that Kagura is reporting a whopping 40cm of snow up at the top there and while we can't confirm that first hand if it is so then I wish I was up there today. Or maybe not quite yet, as strong winds are preventing all but the Mitsumata area from opening today. Those winds also mean that Gala Yuzawa is closed today.

Very loud thunder probably woke most people up in the area just before 6am this morning and since then there has been thunder and lightning at times and a mix of sleet and rain falling at times. Add those fairly strong winds and it adds up to some fairly wild weather this morning.

Nunoba, Kayama Captain Coast and Yuzawa Nakazato have now closed for the season, with the resort closing dates for the remaining resorts currently as noted below. Some of the remaining resorts are not operating on "spring operations" - ie. not all the lifts/courses are open.

6th APRIL:
Ludens Yuzawa
Nakazato Snow Wood
Yuzawa Park
NASPA Ski Garden
Yuzawa Kogen

13th APRIL:
Pine Ridge Resorts Kandatsu

20th APRIL:
Iwappara - 20th April

6th MAY:
GALA Yuzawa
Kagura (Tashiro)

25th MAY:
Kagura (Mitsumata)   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Tuesday 1st April 2008, 10:29am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It almost feels like mid-winter again! Another 5-10cm of snow fell overnight and snow is falling this morning. It's cold as well, so you need to wrap up well out there. It is also very windy this morning which is affecting lift operation in some areas - Okushiga Kogen, Yakebitaiyama and a few smaller areas are not open at the moment.

Now that we are into April, there will be no more nighta floodlit skiing until Golden Week - details of that will be posted as soon as we get it but nighta will probably be available at Ichinose and Kumanoyu at end of this month and into early May.

Spring lift ticket prices are now in effect - it is now 4,000 yen for a one-day ticket at Shiga Kogen (down from 4,800 yen) and 8000 yen for a 2 day ticket (fown from 9,000 yen).

Other than the weather, lift operations have now changed and only limited areas are open now open. (See the report from 28th March for resort closing details).   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Tuesday 1st April 2008, 10:33am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is another overcast day here in Niseko. Winds, as expected, are very strong, especially at the top of the resort. The strong winds have forced the closure of most of the lifts. Currently only the Ace family, Ace #1 and Holiday #1 lifts are in operation.

There have been reports of snow and blizzard conditions in the East of Hokkaido, unfortunately it looks like all we are going to get here in the west of Hokkaido is the wind.

The temperatures are still low, with the freezing level slowly rising from the 500metre level to the 100metre level over the next couple of days.

Furano Now!

Tuesday 1st April 2008, 10:36am
Weather conditions: overcast, light snow in parts, patches of flat light
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another overcast day today. A dusting of light snow overnight has things looking white, but the snow on course has not been topped up significantly.

There is good top to bottom skiing in the Furano Zone. Temperatures are consistently below zero for the last 24 hours, so expect firm hard packed snow on the piste.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Tuesday 1st April 2008, 13:42pm
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Over 25cm of fresh snow at the valley level at present with some impressive lightening and strong winds. Over 1300m there has been up to 40cm settle in places. The snow is forecast to continue through to the early hours of tomorrow morning after which the sun should appear to make for a warm and relatively calm day.

Backcountry Advisory
Be wary of wet slides and large glide cracks (crevasse) opening up, especially on convex rolls.

Naeba Now!

Tuesday 1st April 2008, 14:19pm
Weather conditions: White sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The temperature sits on zero today, whilst the snow sits on the ground. All 40cm of it! Last few days of the season for a lot of people, some have even gone already, while some are still here in the snow and of course making the most of it. We'd almost forgotten about the real snow - even though there is a lot of it still about, we had kind of got used to the slush.

So then, due to the high winds today there has been some lift closure, though gondola No2 is giving us access to a good part of the mountain.

Tomorrow will be sunny, there will be some of the best quality buttery powder, tomorrow is the day. Nice.    Read more ...
