Sun, clear skies
There was a fair bit of rain in Yuzawa yesterday, though it cleared up for the evening and it was another cold night, getting down to about 1 degree.
This morning we have clear blue skies and the forecast is for a day of fine, sunny weather and a high of around 13 degrees in Yuzawa town. It's looking like over the weekend we will see similar conditions.
Kagura were hoping to open tomorrow, but with only a very thin layer of snow remaining up there that is not going to be possible and the resort has announced that the opening needs to be delayed until there is enough snow. The snow machines on the side of the main Kagura course seem to be working hard trying to get something going, but it's just a thin layer still up there and I don't suppose the relatively warm weather over the next few days will help.
The weekly forecast doesn't give us much - if any - snow over the coming six days.
In other news, it seems that the Kayama Captain Coast resort in Yuzawa will not be opening this season. They are saying to look forward to perhaps opening next season. It is not clear if they are making any changes or if this is just a 'year off'.
Planned openings in Yuzawa
Opening as soon as there is enough snow: Kagura
December 4th: Naeba
December 10th: Gala Yuzawa
December 11th: Kagura (Tashiro) Yuzawa Kogen Nunoba Iwappara
December 17th: Kandatsu Kogen
December 18th: Yuzawa Nakazato Nakazato Snow Wood Yuzawa Park NASPA Ski Garden
December 25th: Ipponsugi
The planned opening dates for the resorts in nearby Minamiuonuma are as follows:
December 11th: Joetsu Kokusai
December 18th: Ishiuchi Maruyama Muikamachi Ski Resort
The sun is out and not a cloud in the sky here in Minakami today. Fantastic weather, unless of course you are hoping for a ski resort to open on the weekend. Currently Tenjin have a base of about a centimetre which isn't enough for them to open as planned on Sunday. With the weather looking fine for the next few days it will take a miracle to get it open so it looks as if it will be postponed for a bit.
The next week looks as if the clear, mild weather and double digit temperatures will be sticking around so it will be a bit of a wait for the first turns of the season in this area. Read more ...

Since the snowfall earlier this week as expected things have warmed up over the last couple of days with temperatures well above freezing. Although the nights have been quite cool the sunny and mild days has taken their toll on the snow and the lower south facing slopes of Hirafu are now mostly snow free below about 600m. This weekend was the scheduled opening for the resort but with the lack of snow lift operation has been postponed. The village itself is getting a little busier with more seasonal staff arriving daily and a number of bars and restaurants reopening for the season.
The outlook over the coming week isn't great with very mild weather expected over the weekend and then a little rain on Monday which will turn to snow by Tuesday morning. Not too much of the white stuff expected though. It will then remain cooler with a bigger system looking like it will move through over next weekend. That system has potential to deliver some good amounts of snow, hopefully enough to get the season up and running! Read more ...
Shiga Kogen Now!

Suprise news! A lift at Kumanoyu is operating - the Number 2 pair lift (about 900m) is moving and skiing is possible in Shiga Kogen from today on 600m or so of the nearby course. (You need to get off the lift at the half way station).
It's not real snow though - the machines have been working overtime to try and get the resort open today and they are officially reporting 20cm of 'snow' out there to play in.
It is a beautiful day for it though, clear blue skies and mild temperatures and it looks like we should be having similar good conditions over the weekend as well, so if you want that first run of the season....
Just one thing that needs mentioning - Kumanoyu is a skiers-only area so snowboarders will need to wait a bit longer. Read more ...

Sun, blue skies
It is a beautiful morning in Hakuba with no clouds to be seen - just bright blue skies and mild temperatures. It may very well reach double digits today as the sun warms things up.
The mountains are looking magnificent of course, but... actually we would prefer a cold winter storm right now! It looks like it is going to be at least another week before we get anything like that as the week forecast is looking like we will be experiencing generally fine weather conditions up until this time next week with perhaps just a few sprinklings here and there, particularly around Monday evening time.
