Niseko Now!

Friday 19th January 2007, 8:33am
Weather conditions: Snowing and low lying cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's currently snowing at a moderate rate, to continue from the overnight snowfall of 10-15cms.

There's low lying cloud down to approximately 400m, and will lift slightly as the day continues, but visibility will not be the best for the duration of the day.

Snow conditions will be great, as the over-night snow will have filled in some tracks.

As mentioned yesterday, the long term forecast is for more of the same, with temperatures dropping, so don't forget your thermies and neck-warmers.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Friday 19th January 2007, 8:45am
Weather conditions: Overcast, sunny spells.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We received more snow than predicted yesterday, it snowed lightly for most of the day and there were some periods of heavy snowfall. In the last 24hours we have had 10cm here in town and aound 20cm on the mountain. Temperatures are getting lower every night, we got down to -12 last night in town. Today should feel a bit warmer because we are gettig some clear spells but the temp is not predicted to get above -3.

It's a good idea to get out there as early as possible today and get into the fresh stuff before its tracked out because it doesn't look like it will be snowing again 'till later on this afternoon.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Light snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We did get some snow overnight - around 5-10cm or so at town level with more on the slopes and higher up with Kagura this morning reporting 25-30cm of new snow overnight, meaning that conditions should be pretty good out there today - especially at Kagura. (They are also reporting some strong winds preventing a few lifts up top operating early on this morning).

At the moment some light snow is falling at town level but it is quite bright and looking like it may well be clearing up. As it stands the forecast for tomorrow is sun with cloud on Sunday, but we will update this page later on this evening with the latest.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Friday 19th January 2007, 9:25am
Weather conditions: snowing lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Light snow started falling around 20:00 last night and continues to fall this morning. So far 12cm of snow has accumulated at the village level and around 30 cm in the mountains.

It is expected to clear mid morning, which should see the sun come out and make for a beautiful blue sky day, and great visibility. There is currently a light Northerly blowing, that may become stronger from midday and continue though to tomorrow morning.

The weekend looks like it will be mostly clear and sunny weather on Saturday with snow comming in on Sunday. The on-piste conditions should be good at all Minakami ski areas but there will be limited powder at lower elevation ski areas. With winds strenghtening tonight the new snow is likely to be transported into valleys, so anyone searching for a bit of powder may find some nice spots in sheltered valleys tomorrow, especially at Tenjindaira and White Valley ski areas.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: grey sky with snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
OK, so it's snowing - or it could be said that it is 'dumping!'....

-6 degrees at the village, and there's a beautiful 20cm of snow on the ground. The wind is around the 20kmph mark - which, judging by the way the snow has settled will be filling in some of those valleys for us - and should help with blocking out some of this river action we've been seeing, yes it's about to hit the last third of january and these are still lurking in the BC!

No complaints coming from this side of the mountain though, snow is snow and so expect a lot of fun this weekend - there will be plenty of fun for all and of course a whole lot more snow up top and over in the Kagura valleys and top runs.

Tuck in those t-shirts for protection against powdering your botty, don the thermal socks for toe insulation against all those billions of settled snowflakes that you'll be disturbing, goggle up! (and don't forget the spare pair for your pocket - for replacement of the steamed up pair!) and....

Friday 19th January 2007, 10:29am
Weather conditions: Snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow! However not nearly as much as expected. It is snowing lightly now in the village and on the mountain as it did late yesterday and last night. A total of around 10cm fell in the last 24 hours, which is still enough for a great day on the mountain. The new depths for today are 180cm on Yamabiko and 135cm at Uenotaira. The temperatures are -7C at the top and -1C in the village .

The forecast is for light snow to continue for today and for clouds to remain for the next few days however snow is unlikley untill at least after the weekend.

Hakuba Now!

Friday 19th January 2007, 10:50am
Weather conditions: Broken cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
This morning the rosy fingered dawn was definitely playing on the Hakuba/Shirouma San Zan (the three peaks of Yari ga Dake, Shakushi Dake and Shirouma Dake). There is 11 cm of new snow of moderate density (80 kg/m3) this morning in the valley floor. There is evidence of a small wind event during the night with some snow drifted across roads adjacent to open areas. With the forecast of clearing skies and moderate temperatures the bit of new snow on the firm base should provide a good medium for sliding fun.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) the 0630 hr. reading is:
Sky: broken cloud
Temperature: Present: -4.5 C
Maximum: 6 C
Minimum: -6.0 C
Wind: calm
Precipitation: S -1
Barometer and trend: 924 hPa and rising
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 11 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 76 cm
Foot penetration: 24 cm
Surface: new snow, size 2 mm
Density of new snow: 80 kilograms per cubic meter

Above Tree Line: Considerable

At Tree Line: Moderate

Below Tree Line: Moderate

N.B. the hazard may increase with daytime warming and may be higher due to an as of yet unknow, but strongly suspected, wind transporting wind even overnight.

Travel Advisory:
Good visibilty and the promise of good quality powder snow on most aspects should get more than a few legs working in honest labour. We now have probably something in the order of 30 cm (adding measured new snow amounts) covering the January 17th surface hoar. It will be interesting to see if and where this layer reacts to shear tests. Ski cutting of sheltered (from sun and wind) unsupported rolls would be a good quick and dirty option with the January 17th layer still not too deep.

The significant wind event of last night may or may not have affected the tree line and above areas. Keep tabs on this as you push out there. Daytime warming will probably raise the level of the hazard.

Good hunting!

Shiga Kogen Now!

Friday 19th January 2007, 11:51am
Weather conditions: Sun, some cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Those clouds did arrive later on in the day yesterday and (even though the official snow depth numbers posted above do not reflect that) we have had about 20cm or so of fresh snow since last night in Shiga Kogen - conditions out there are good! It's a fairly cold day today so you'll need to wrap up warm.

Snow is still falling as we approach midday and so so hopefully we will get some more cms before the weekend. The forecast for the weekend is looking like cloud for tomorrow and possibly fine weather on Sunday.   Read more ...
