Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 19th January 2006, 8:50am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow continues and like yesterday it is not snowing heavily, and so visibility is not too bad (at town level anyway). It's a cold day though with temperatures back to mid-winter levels.

There are some fairly strong winds blowing around especially higher up - and as a result Tashiro and Kagura are closed, though the Mitsumata area of the Kagura resort is open. The top area of Naeba is also not open today. Down nearer town level, the Iwappara gondola is not operating and over at Kandatsu, the Milky Way and Andromeda courses are still not open. For the moment Gala seems to be opening the Central and Northern parts of the resort as it has been most days.

It looks like tomorrow will see less snow and calmer conditions.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After a fairly calm day yesterday, and light snow overnight this morning is a different story with fairly strong winds and snow coming down early on. Higher and exposed regions of the resort areas are particularly windy with some lifts closed closed early on (Okushiga, Yokoteyama, Shibutoge being particularly affected). Tomorrow should see better conditions.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 19th January 2006, 11:29am
Weather conditions: Sunny with cloudy patches
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's very windy day up there, so bring along plenty of warm clothing. The blowing snow across the fields down in the valley is throwing some snow across the roads as well so drive carefully as you can get temporary white outs with the big gusts. The roads are a bit icy too so take that in to account as well. Expect strong winds from the North West with stronger gusts up on the slopes. Broken cloud with sunny patches and snow flurries through out the day. Temperatures will warm with sun but the wind looks like it will keep things chilly up top.

The runs are hard packed groom and perfect for FAST carving, especially because there aren't many people up on them at present. You may encounter upper lift closures as Goryu already have closed some upper lifts and the Gondola.

Natural Avalanches unlikely. Human triggered avalanches possible.
Use caution in steep terain especially around rocky outcrops, cornices and convexing rolls on unsupported slopes.
A crust covers most of the mountains right now but there are pockets of wind deposited snow in gullies and leaward slopes. Be careful of instability in this layer especially with increasing snow over the January 14th, rain crust. There is some faceting taking place beneath the rain crust as well that is also a concern. Do not be under the assumption that the crust means that the slopes are bomb proof. There is a possibility that avalanches may be set off in the areas described above especially when combined with solar radiation or intense wind loading. Be cautious out there.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 19th January 2006, 13:01pm
Weather conditions: Snowing heavily with micro flakes and lots of them
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Zillions of nano flakes everywhere today, its like castor suger in the air. Clouds are low thick and look heavy with snow. Some very short blue spells earlier today. Windy gusts come and go, so a bit unpredictable at times. A soft blizzard would describe the weather I suppose. Good to see the powder supply is being restocked.   Read more ...
