Minakami Now!

Sunday 19th December 2010, 9:26am
Weather conditions: Blue sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A decent bit of snow yesterday which came down into the valley as well. It started snowing around lunchtime and kept up into the evening. It was good to see everything white again but the sun is out again today and the snow in the town will probably melt today. The resorts received a decent bit with Tenjin reporting a massive 55 metre base on the website at the moment - typos aside, they have a good base now and another snowfall should see all lifts operational.

Houdaigi are still hanging on to see what weather does in the next few days. The freezing level is due to rise a little which could mean snow or rain for them. They are confident that they should be ready to go by next weekend at the latest.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Sunday 19th December 2010, 9:35am
Weather conditions: Clear sunny skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It was snowing (lightly) for most of the day yesterday but Kagura is only reporting less than 5cm of snow since yesterday and now an official snow depth of 80cm.

The big news though is that the Mitsumata slopes are now open meaning that all of the Kagura resort areas are now open and skiable... no need for shuttle buses any more!

Operations at Naeba remain unchanged.

This morning the sun is out, the skies are clear and it is sunny. A fantastic day actually and it will be fun out on the slopes today. You need to be wrapped up though because it is cold early on.

The new snowfall looks like it will be with us on Tuesday night into Wednesday and hopefully we are on for a few days of decent snowfall to get more of Naeba open and also get those snow depths looking more impressive.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Sunday 19th December 2010, 9:52am
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After hanging out for the last two weeks for some good snow yesterday was a powder hit for everyone. Blue skies this morning showed what remained and with most of the lower runs not pressed yet there were first tracks top to bottom down the mountains all over the place.

This weekend is a big treat for all snow lovers with overcast snowy pow conditions yesterday and bluebird skies today and everyone is out in force for the first time this season.

The snow has allowed resorts to begin getting going properly and pretty much all of the resorts in the Hakuba and Otari Villages are now open with limited operations.

Forecast is for more precipitation to come soon; looks like things will still be warm and so how much of that falls as snow will be the deciding factor for how things shape up over the early part of the new week with everyone dreaming of a White Christmas it's sure to come!

Yuzawa Now!

Sunday 19th December 2010, 9:53am
Weather conditions: Sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is a bright sunny morning in Yuzawa and even though it was snowing on and off for large parts of yesterday there's not really much to show for it on the ground at town level... and what there is will likely dry up as the day progresses. The morning started off cold but it will probably rise to around 7 or 8 degrees a bit later on this afternoon.

As I mentioned yesterday, all of the Kagura areas are now open - the main Kagura courses as well as Tashiro and Mitsumata - while the same parts of Naeba are open.

Up at Gala Yuzawa, they have enough snow to be able to open up some proper runs from today. The Grenoble, Entertainment, Melody and lower part of Edelweiss courses in the central area of the resort are now open.

Forecast looks like tomorrow will be another generally fine day with snow due Wednesday (perhaps slightly before then) and Thursday.... and it's looking quite good for a decent snowfall as well as it stands....   Read more ...

Zao Now!

Sunday 19th December 2010, 10:13am
Weather conditions: Sun, clear skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday it was snowing in the morning, but by later on in the afternoon it was clear and the sun was out.

And the sun is out this morning with clear blue skies all around. The snow depth up at Chuo is inching upwards, though still low as you can see above - but, enough to slide, and it will be fun out there on the slopes today.

There's more of the resort open from today as well with lifts in the Paradise, Yokokura, Utopia and Chuo areas now moving so there's a decent amount of runs to choose from now.

Wednesday and Friday are the days to look out for in the coming week. If the forecast comes off, we should be in for some decent snowfall on both of those days that would surely get the whole of the mountain up and running for Christmas.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Sunday 19th December 2010, 10:32am
Weather conditions: Clear sunny blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After that bit of snowfall yesterday morning, it cleared up later in the day and this morning the sun has got his hat on once again. There are blue skies all around and sunny, though it remains cold. Nothing really to report this morning in terms of resort operations and I think the resorts are all now just waiting for a dump of snow to come and looking towards the middle of the week for that to hopefully happen... the forecast looks promising as it stands at the moment.

We might see a sprinkling of snow again tonight but it should generally be fine weather on Monday and Tuesday, with that next cold snowy front due around Tuesday night.

In the meantime, with the temperatures remaining cold, there's some fun to be had in the fine weather of today.

Myoko Now!

Sunday 19th December 2010, 10:58am
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A nice but not super-deep snowfall yesterday added a little more to the base; four areas have opened for very limited operations. It's a beautiful day, though, so even if the skiing isn't varied (and likely to be a little icy and rocky), it's still good to be up in the hills.

Niseko Now!

Sunday 19th December 2010, 11:59am
Weather conditions: Snowing lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow continued lightly on and off through yesterday but mostly cleared overnight. This morning there has been light snow again and in total since last report we've probably only had about 5cm of new snow. Temperatures are a little milder today and the snow a little heavier down low but there's still very quality snow on the upper mountain.
All lifts are running in the resort now except for the very top lifts up around the peak.
High pressure has developed to the east of Japan and a low is approaching from the west meaning a mild, southerly airstream will move up over Hokkaido fo the next day or so. A little light rain is expected at lower level around the resort overnight tonight into tomorrow.
As the low passes through temps will drop a little and snow is expected to the base again later on Tuesday but it is likely to be fairly wet snow down low. To be honest a little wetter snow around the resort won't be such a bad thing right now as it could help weigh down and cover the remaining sasa. Sure I7d still prefer dry powder but hey got to look on the bright side!
Similar conditions will persist for much of the week but a much stronger low should move up the eastern side of Hokkaido on Christmas Eve and hopefull set up nicely to dump snow at Christmas.

Avalanche Report

Moiwa base 6am: -3℃ and slight overnight snowfall.
The wind above 1100m has stagnated around 10m/s westerly and no notable developments of snowdrifts can be observed.
Yesterday’s fresh snow is now settling and stabilizing.
The general avalanche risk is lower than yesterday’s. However, the transitions in the snow, especially in steep slopes, should be watched carefully as the temperature is forecasted to rise from today.
The terrain features are difficult to see due to today’s flat light, remain in control and ride carefully.
There is still not enough snow in the out of bounds areas and gates are yet to open for a while.
Ask for ski patrol’s advice.
Have a nice Sunday!

Furano Now!

Sunday 19th December 2010, 13:53pm
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Things have been relatively quiet today compared to yesterday's snow storm. Lingering snow showers that lasted late into the evening put a few more centimeters on top of everything, but daybreak saw dissipating clouds and even a few shafts of sunlight broke through for the noon hours before clouding back over. All in all, it's a beautiful day to be out on the slopes, so if you have a few hours, the Furano Zone is the place to be today.

It's still relatively cold at a seasonal -7, but temperatures should rise slightly overnight due to an approaching front that will be bringing us more precipitation tomorrow. Be sure to bundle up!   Read more ...
