Snow and weather reports posted on Thursday 21st November 2019

After a fine day yesterday for the most part, rain started falling in the evening and at times it was quite heavy. I was woken up this morning by the sound of torrential rain outside. It's still raining but not quite as hard, though rain is forecast for the day.
It looks like there's a bit more snow on the mountains though with the snowline creeping down a bit further this morning - though visibility is mostly really poor at the moment. Hopefully there'll be more up at Kagura as they prepare for their opening on Saturday. No firm details from them yet, but we'll keep an eye out and post when we have something.
Anyway, in the meantime here are the planned opening dates for ski resorts in Yuzawa Town:
Saturday 22nd November: Kagura
Saturday 6th December: Kagura Tashiro Iwappara
Saturday 13th December: Naeba
Friday 19th December: Yuzawa Nakazato Yuzawa Kogen Yuzawa Park
List up of the resorts from Minamionuma coming soon. Read more ...

Cloud, light snow sprinklings, bit of sun
There's just a slight dusting of snow to report this morning - I'll be generous and log it as 1cm rather than 0cm - and it's a mixed bunch of weather conditions likely for today. Actually as I write this the sun is peeking through the clouds. Temperature once again hovering around the 0C mark as of 9am this morning.
So we are now just a handful of days away from the first ski lifts starting up for the season. Hopefully. It's looking pretty good for that to happen as things stand but as always will keep you informed as we approach the weekend.
For many locals or people working here the beginning of the season is one of those times to get out and enjoy the snow - before the large numbers of people descent on the area making it difficult to get a chance to get out. I'll certainly be trying to make the most of the early season. Fingers crossed we can get off to a good start.
Planned opening dates for the different resort areas on the mountain:
Niseko Grand Hirafu - Saturday 22nd November Niseko Annupuri Kokusai - Saturday 22nd November Niseko Village - Monday 1st December Niseko Hanazono - Saturday 6th December
Yesterday the sun was out and there are still actually some really lovely autumn colours around the village area and further down towards central Iiyama as well.
But winter is definitely just around the corner now. We even had a bit of wet snow falling in the village - as you can see on the photo posted below. Yey, as they say!
It looks like snow is continuing to fall higher up as we go back to rain down here in the village.
Nozawa Onsen plans to open for the season on Saturday 29th November. Read more ...

Cloud, some sun at times
The sun has been out for a bit this morning and showing off all of the "white" on show with I would say a good 20+cm on the middle slopes of the resort. It's all looking like we could be sliding soon.
Not much snow on the forecast over the coming week though, as it stands anyway. Hopefully it will remain cold. Read more ...
Shiga Kogen Now!
Tuesday 18th November 2014, 11:34am
The last week has seen temperatures plummet and some sprinklings of snow and.... oh yes, the Kumanoyu area is open!
Yes, the first ski lift of the season is moving. Just the Number 2 pair lift, with a 600m run of around 20-30m width has opened this morning. There has been a layer of real snow with the snow machines backing that up to let this happen.
So it's the officially the first day of the ski season in Shiga Kogen - please note that snowboarders aren't allowed at the Kumanoyu area, it's skiers only. (Don't blame us!)
These Shiga Kogen Now reports will become daily once we are into December and more is open but we'll keep this page updated a few times a week until then. Read more ...

Hello and welcome back to Madarao Now.
It was over 7 months ago when I posted the last report from last season and here we are with 2014-2015 just around the corner. It has definitely been a mixed bag of weather over the green season, but it's the white season that we're most interested here I'm sure!
Madarao Kogen plans to open from Friday 19th December for the 2014-2015 season. By then there will surely be enough snow and everyone will be well up for it... here's to a bumper season.
More reports coming in the weeks leading up to the resort opening with news on the new ungroomed course called 'Ninja' that will be added this season. To get you in the mood, below is a photo of the nice covering of snow there is on the runs. Read more ...

Wet and gray
The snow is slowly creeping down the hill; the fall blooms (yellow bulldozers and red snowthrowers) are now in full glory around the homes; the invitations for the endless (and ski performance dampening) year-end parties are coming in. That special time of the year is just about upon us.
We’ve had a rainy summer in Myoko this year. Not as much trekking up in the hills, and so much moisture that we worried if there’d be enough water left for snowfall. Not really worried about it, to be honest; there never seems to be much correlation between summer rain and winter snow. More that the Japan Sea is staying pretty warm, which gets that moisture up in the air. Come on, Siberian winds!
A lot more international travelers coming this year; a lot of hotels are pretty well booked for January. No real changes on the hill, but then why mess around with a good thing.
So now it’s just time for that first big snowfall that we usually get this time of year, wet and concrete-like and tough on the trees. Then it melts and makes us wait until too often right around Christmas. And then it really starts coming down.
So I’ll be back from time to time, just to keep you wishing it really was January and there is a meter of new snow on the ground. Which will happen (we hope).
PS Sorry, the clouds just parted as I when to take a look at visibility. Snow down to maybe 900 meters. But I'm not going to record this yet as actual snowfall.... Read more ...
