Nozawa Onsen Now!
Tuesday 18th March 2014, 8:15am
It's a warm morning in Nozawa; as of 9am it's +4C here in the village and the resort is reporting a temperature of +2C up on the top Yamabiko area, +3C on Uenotaira. No new snow to report this morning.
It is cloudy early on this morning but rain is expected today.
It will be a very spring condition day out there I expect.
Still, that chance of snow I mentioned for around Thursday/Friday still seems on...

Yesterday ended up being a beautiful day in the region.
None of that snow overnight I'm afraid and it is starting off very warm here... warmest of the year so far surely and currently it is just over +3C.
It is a grey and cloudy morning and strong winds are affecting top lifts at resorts for the start of the day.
We're expecting rain/sleet later on today, hopefully it will be snowing higher up and lower down here too if it can keep cold enough.
So, we are now in the second half of March and things are quietening down considerably - it's in this later part of the season when there are fewer people around when lots of locals can start having some time off and get out onto the mountain, more than in peak season anyway. Unless you are very lucky!
Regarding nighta, just a few days left now. Operations at Hirafu since the weekend have been scaled back and it's just now the Ace Family Pair lift and Ace Number 2 Center Four lift that are operating... both up until Saturday 22nd March, as well as nighta at the other resort areas. So it's last chance to get in some night skiing or boarding before it closes for the season. Sad.
I'll mention it again though - (at least some) ski lifts plan to be moving up until Golden Week at the beginning of May.
The weather is forecasted to turn bad as the next low pressure approaches. Temperature is rising accordingly and wet snow and southern wind will pick up. Wet-snow slabs are developing above 800m and steep slopes may slide later in the afternoon. Spring climax slides hazard is rising in south facing strictly off-limits areas. Snow and wind will pick up as the Low passes and cold air starts to flow in. Possibilities of dry-snow surface slab avalanche from March 17th layer or deeper weak layers will then rise. Gates opening is yet to be determined. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. The snow in the trees is not good. This information is being written for the sake of all resort users. Weather and snowfall transition are being used as the main indication to evaluate the hazards. Most accidents occur during poor weather conditions. Always keep your plans flexible and adjust them with the current weather status.
Official snow depth numbers and lift news at time of writing:
Temperatures rose yesterday (to nearly 10 degrees) in what was mostly a fine and clear day in the region. That early hazy lifted somewhat in the afternoon.
After a mild evening, it's already about +7C here though not forecast to warm up much beyond that. A cloudy start to the day, but unfortunately we're expecting rain this afternoon. With a freezing point at around 2400m, it might even be rain right up to Kagura. Hopefully not of course and surely later on as it gets a bit colder it will be snow not rain. We're just going to have to wait on that and find out.
Any sign of snow? Not a whole lot, but we might see some fresh down to town around Friday.
Yesterday was one of those fabulous beautiful blue sky days over Zao. The top area is still looking great as well, with the Juhyo monsters not wanting to give up on the season. Certainly does not feel like the mid-March of recent years.
Strong winds and possibly rain forecast for later. That doesn't sound good.
Snow around Thursday though with a late season blast of winter?

A bit of sun earlier on, but it's mostly grey and cloudy now, and rain will very probably be falling today... up high as well. As night time approaches it should be snow up there but I think we'll be lucky to get white stuff down here.
Thursday/Friday continues to look promising for some of that white stuff though.
