New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Just a dusting of fresh yesterday and overnight. Temperature is currently -10 and predicted to remain below -5 all day. The long term forecast is giving a little snow for the next few days but mostly clear.

There were a few bright spells yesterday when the view opened up and we could see across to the Daisetzusan Range, we should get a few more of those today.

Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
With alittle bit of fresh falling over night the conditions for riding today will be good.

With light snow forecast for Thursday and Friday getting out and hitting the slopes this weekend will be primo.

Looking beyond friday and into the weekend, it shouldn't be to bad with some cloudy skies and low winds.

Looking even further into the future Monday should be the same as the weekend with probably some heavier snow fall coming Tuesday. Making this a good time to catch up with family and hit the slopes Wednesday.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Weather conditions: Cloud, sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No new snow to report overnight and it is a cloudy start to the day, although just as I am typing this the sun has made an appearance and there seems to be a fair amount of blue sky visible that was covered just a short while back. It is another relatively mild morning with and we do have snow forecast for this morning even. Perhaps that won't happen but the weather people are telling us to expect snow through until tomorrow morning and so hopefully it is on its way right now...   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 18th January 2007, 9:07am
Weather conditions: Overcast Snowing lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
At the 0700 hr. reading time the sky was mostly cloudy with the odd, lonely looking snow flake drifting down in the just freezing, still air. The main peaks where cloaked in clouds. At 0830 hrs. the cloud ceiling seems to be around 1,500 m a.s.l. A negligible amount of snow has fallen in the last 24 hours. Yesterday's warming throught the clouds was enough to allow a weak crust to form overnight in the valley. Point releases were observed yesterday in the higher elevations. This warming has made the runs on the resorts hard packed and hopefully groomed as any moguls are deep and forbiding.

The good news is that it looks as if snow fall is just about on our doorstep. The barometric lines of presure are lining up North to South with cold low presure air masses moving in from North Korea and Siberia. And all those who know the mountains here in the Japanese North Alps know that this meens snow!

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) the 0700 hr. reading is:
Sky: broken cloud
Temperature: Present: -1.0 C
Maximum: 3 C
Minimum: -2.0 C
Wind: calm
Precipitation: S -1
Barometer and trend: 917 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 2 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 68 cm
Foot penetration: 20 cm
Surface: new snow, size 2 mm
Density of new snow: not measurable
Crust: 3 cm
Above Tree Line: Moderate

At Tree Line: Low

Below Tree Line: Low

N.B. the hazard may increase with daytime warming and/or increased snowfall.

Travel Advisory:
This morning there is a weak crust (at valley bottom at least) about 3 cm thick. But this crust is not very strong as the snow that fell overnight has insulated it slightly from Radiant heat loss. Reports of warming yesterday at higher elevations (point releases observed) indicates that there is also a substantial crust formed there as well. This is the basis for the hazard rating today. Also the cautionary note concerning the daily warming and subsequent breaking down of this crust.

The surface hoar that was observed recently is now covered by the new snow of yesterday. This will be referred to as the "January 17th layer".

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 18th January 2007, 9:09am
Weather conditions: Sun, some cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The sun is out early on this morning and it is bright blue skies with just some cloud hanging on - fantastic day to be out on the snow. There are no crowds at all this week and apart from some areas that are playing host to school trips, you almost have the slopes to yourself out there.

It is colder than it was yesterday and the roads are icy early on.

It is looking likely that clouds will move in later on in the day and snow fall before the end of the day. With a good chance of more snow tomorrow as well that will be perfect timing with a topup of freshies before the weekend.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Thursday 18th January 2007, 9:15am
Weather conditions: Clear skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another perfect blue sky day this morning with a current temperature of 1 deg C in at the village and no wind at all.

The warm daytime temperatures of late and some cool nights have created a large crust on the snows surface which will be present on most faces except for some Northern faces at higher altitudes.

The forecast for today is for the clouds to roll in and snow to start from this evening continuing through to tomorrow morning. Saturday is looking like fine weather with more snow comming from Sunday morning continuing through to Monday night.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Thursday 18th January 2007, 9:39am
Weather conditions: Cloudy and overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A not so clear crisp day today. Blue sky dotted with lumps of cloud at the moment but further away over and past the peak of Naeba there seems to be some thick clouds forming, hopefully bringing some snow with them. Not much in the way of any breeze as yet but as i write this the cloud does seem to be rolling in so i expect very soon it will be somewhat overcast.

No new snowfall over night and the temperature is a chilly -3. The snow seems very crsipy underfoot today.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 18th January 2007, 9:51am
Weather conditions: some clouds.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow expected for today has as yet not begun. In fact although the village is shrouded in clouds this morning the peaks at Yamabiko and Uenotaira are out in full sunshine. Once again great views are available across the valley to other resorts. The base depths are almost as yesterday with Yamabiko having 170cm and Uenotaira a little less with 130cm. The lower reaches of the resort and the village have between 35cm and 70cm of snow, and are currently sitting at between +1C and +2C. Temperatures at the top are slightly colder at –3C and –6C at Yamabiko and Uenotaira.

The forecast still predicts up to 15cm today with light snow set to continue for the next few days.
