Morning from Yuzawa.
At last the winds died down somewhat yesterday evening.
It's a much calmer morning this morning and just cloudy at the moment - 9C degrees here in town now and a high of about 14C forecast for later on.
As noted yesterday, today GALA Yuzawa is closed for course maintenance and so the only option today is Kagura.
We are expecting sunny skies tomorrow when both GALA Yuzawa and Kagura should be open as normal.
Resorts that remain open in Yuzawa on Monday 18th April 2016):
GALA Yuzawa *** NOTE - Closed today for course maintenance *** GALA Yuzawa resort plans to be open until Sunday 8th May. Three (Edelweiss, Melody and Entertainment) of the six courses in the Central Area, the 'playing in the snow area', and the Broadway course in the Northern Area currently remain open. The downhill Falcon course back to the Cowabunga base is now closed. Official snow depth: 70cm
Kagura The Tashiro Ropeway plans to be open until 8th May. The Kagura area via Mitsumata Ropeway plans to be open until 29th May. The Mitsumata area is now used as a 'connecting course' to get to and from the Kagura area and the downhill course to Mitsumata car park is now closed. Most Kagura courses remain open. Official snow depth: Kagura area - 190cm Tashiro area - 160cm Mitsumata area - 90cm
Resorts that are not listed below are now closed for the season.
After the nasty winds and disruption of yesterday, things are thankfully much calmer this morning... and the four resorts appear to be opening as planned.
The weather yesterday has almost certainly cost us more snow though... it will be interesting to see how conditions have changed this morning. Resorts aiming to be open for another 2+ weeks, whether they can all hold out and do that is another issue.
It's a mix of fine and overcast cloud early this morning though the forecast tells us that there is a chance of a bit of rain later on.
Tomorrow should see a return of the sun which will be most welcome.

Hello from Niseko and it's another not-too-nice morning here.
Rain is falling (not seeing any snow) and there's some stronger winds up on the mountain as well which are preventing Annupuri from opening early on. Less wind forecast for later on and so fingers crossed.
Tomorrow cloud is forecast.
If you want sunshine, looks like we need to wait until Wednesday.
From today, the Ace Family Pair lift is closed leaving us with three lifts scheduled to be operating at Niseko Grand Hirafu.
Resort specific lift opening news at time of posting:
Niseko Grand Hirafu The top Ace Number 4 lift is on hold due to strong winds and poor visibility.
Resort operations - subject to change due to snow and weather conditions
Niseko Grand Hirafu resort area lift operations: Ace Number 2 Center Four Quad Ace Number 3 Pair Ace Number 4 Pair
The resort is going to be 'upgrading' the King Number 3 triple lift in time for next season - as part of this work the Hirafu Gondola, King Number 3 and 4 lifts have all now closed for the season. Niseko Grand Hirafu plans to remain open until Thursday 5th May.
Niseko Annupuri plans to be open until Thursday 5th May with the Gondola, Jumbo 1 and Jumbo 4 lifts operating.
Niseko Village is currently closed but plans to be open again for Golden Week from Friday 29th April until Thursday 5th May.
The low pressure has gone and the weather is much better now. There is some wind blowing around this morning but it should be calmer this afternoon.
Weather conditions are now full-on spring and it is increasingly hard to imagine any fresh snow now.
The roads are dry and there is no need snow tires anymore.
Unfortunately, Grandeco ended operating of #2 lift for the season today. If Center Course becomes disconnected, #2 lift will open again instead of #1 lift. In addition, Lavender B course has closed from today to keep snow for the Rainbow 3500 course upper part. There's still 3km of course from the gondola peak station to the base available though.
The Snow Park closed for the season.
Nekoma ski resort has announced that they will end their ski season on 24th April. They will be closed from 19-22th April so that means that the rest of their season is just the 23rd and 24th April. Grandeco plans to keep going until courses become unavailable. After 25th April, Grandeco will be the only open ski resort in Fukushima Prefecture.
According to the forecast, it will be fair / cloudy and warm temperature for a few days. Sakura cherry blossoms in Inawashiro area (South part of Mt. Bandai) are now start blooming. Most people are start to think about going for trips to warm places, but Grandeco will continue the ski season for the people who love to ride on snow!
Gondola Number 1 quad
Courses that remain open:
[A-a] Rainbow 3500 [A-b] Rainbow 3500 (approx. 1km long and connecting to the Center course) [C] Center (approx. 2km)
Not very nice weather yesterday with strong winds stopping the gondola, though it's better this morning though remaining rather cloudy. Tomorrow we should be enjoying some early morning sunshine with more sun due on Wednesday as well.
It's just the top area of the mountain open now - get the Gondola back down to base. There's still good snow cover up there if you want to keep on riding the snow.
Up at Uenotaira, the Snow Park and Cross Country Course are now closed for the season.
Official info at time of writing on Monday 16th April 2016 (subject to change):
The stormy conditions we were subjected to yesterday are passed and it's the calm after said storm now.
The winds were pretty hairy yesterday at times. Glad that they have calmed down. Not done the conditions out on the slopes any favours at all. I am hearing that in particular the connecting course between Ichinose Family and Takamagahara is now no longer open.
Some changes to lift operations.
The biggest news is that Yokoteyama and Shibutoge lifts will all be closed come 1st May. Yokoteyama is usually the place that remains open the longest and often until late May. This season though the Yokoteyama lifts will close next weekend and the Shibutoge lift on 1st May.
Other resorts that planned to be open until 8th May haven't made any announcements, but it would not be surprising for them to not manage to be open until that date.
If you want a late season slide, the sooner the better is highly recommended!
Planned late season dates for Shiga Kogen resort areas:
Please note that the below dates are all subject to change and of course dependant on snow conditions. There's a good chance that any dates mentioning May may not be possible. We'll try to keep this up-to-date with every new report.
