Temperatures remained well below zero yesterday, but quite a bit of sun as well. Last night Akakura and Suginohara both had -8C and Togakushi had -12. Temps should fall again as the day progresses. Niseko Now!

Weather conditions: Cloud, Snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We have to be the luckiest skiers in the world. There is more powder than you can shake a ski stick at at the moment!

It has been snowing regularly since the New Year and yesterday and last night the powder came down in buckets. Powder skiing was exceptional everywhere. For those that still had the energy, night skiing was also full of face shots.

Niseko is in a low trough between two highs. It continues to snow this morning. Everyone is racing to the lifts for another huge powder day. The Niseko Avalanche report and Hirafu report is not up yet and I am going skiing so will report back later but there is no question, skiing and boarding will be all time!   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 17th January 2008, 8:24am
Weather conditions: Overcast with snow showers through out the morning.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Conditions are very much the same as yesterday, light snow through the night that will continue through the morning. Temperatures are cool again today and will stay cold with overcast skies and light to moderate winds from the North - North West.

Yesterday the technical term dust on crust was observed emerging from the mouths of many so nice the snow is continuing and conditions are improving.

Backcountry Travel Advisory as per January 15th:

There has been a lot happening in the mountains lately. We had rain to 2400 meters through the night on January 11th that turned to snow on the morning of January 12th. That snow fell hard in the AM and tappered off in the afternoon. Cool temperatures through the night of the 12th made everything crisp and turned the rain layer into a hard ice crust. The morning of the 13th brought strong cold winds and more snowfall out of the North West that scoured the Northern slopes and deposited large amounts of wind affected snow on the Soutern slopes. This wind deposited snow rested over the rain crust of the day previous and although bonding faily well at low elevation below tree line the wind deposited snow has not been as quick to bond at tree line and in the Alpine areas of the Hakuba Mountains.

Use extreme caution when moving on or under South and South East aspects at tree line and in the alpine as unstable wind slab is present on these slopes. Be aware of solar radiation on these slopes today and temperature increases.

The wind slabs that were created on the 13th remain unstable and are not bonding to the ice crust below them. One large Size 3 avalanche from the peak of Hakuba Norikura Dake was observed and investigated by students on a recent Advanced Avalanche Awareness Course. The crown fracture was an average of 70 cms over a width of 200 meters and ran close to a kilometer to it's run out on the flats of the Tsugaike shizen. There were massive blocks of high density wind slab and debris that was piled 5 meters deep in places. The avalanche is presumed to have happened in the early hours of January 14th.

Field Tests:

Snow profiles showed that the wind slab found on the South Eastern aspects of the Tsugaike area are over-riding a lower density layer of new snow composed of needles and decomposing snow that has started to facet right above the ice crust of Jan. 12th. Moderate; sudden colapse, compression test results were found as well as a Reusch Block 4 on the same Ice crust / new snow interface that reconfirmed the instability of the newly created wind slab.

Clear skies and cool temperatures overnight will have only continued to decrease stability with increased faceting at the ice crust new snow interface.

Be increasingly careful as new snow that is forcasted this week acumulates on north facing wind scoured slopes, that may have a layer of surface hoar on the crust after last nights clear skies, will not be stable and should not be ventured on to with out reasing there stability.

Wind-slabbed south slopes with increased weight of new snow may produce large destructive avalanches and large alpine bowls and non-supported slopes should be avoided.

Avalanche Hazard:

Alpine: Considerable

Tree Line: Moderate

Below Tree Line: Low

Above ratings will decrease with new snow.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 17th January 2008, 8:45am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There is some major pukage happening in Nozawa right now. It has settled on the heated roads, which is no mean feat. It is very cold again so the quality of the snow is bound to be great. The last week has been absolutely fantastic, lets hope it can continue.

In the forecast we have snow easing today and coming back for a few showers on Saturday.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 17th January 2008, 8:51am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
I got up early this morning to look out of the window and not see the snow that was promised. But the snow started falling at around 7am and it is now snowing quite heavily - probably with as much purpose as we have seen this season and it is quickly starting to pile up. Lets hope that continues.

Kagura are reporting 10-20cm of new snow overnight and temperatures or -9 up on the main slope and while it is not that cold down here in the town it is still around -4 degrees, so it's a very cold day. There's not much of a wind though at the moment and lifts seems to be operating as normal.

The forecast at the moment is for snow all day today and also through tomorrow and Saturday, so if it continues falling like it is now then conditions for the weekend should be really great!   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Thursday 17th January 2008, 9:02am
Weather conditions: snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday the snow didn't really settle in, with only light falls throughout the day not amounting to much. This morning the snow started around 6:00 and is now coming down at 3cm/hour with 5cm on the ground in the valley. The snow should continue for most of the day until late evening bringing an estimated 20cm to the valley and 30-40cm above 1300m.

There is now wind at present which makes a nice change. This should give the snow a good chance to settle and cover the icy areas that were exposed by the strong winds of late.

The snow is expected to clear late this evening with the next 3 days being cloundy with some sun expected on Saturday and Sunday.

Naeba Now!

Thursday 17th January 2008, 9:20am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Although it was snowing on and off for most of the day yesterday, it wasn't the kind of snowfall that gives you lots of new cm of snow to play in.

Overnight there has just been a small amount of snow in the Naeba area but Kagura is reporting 10-20cm of new snow.

The snow is coming down now and it looks like it will be a snowy and cold day, with temperatures well below zero and unlikely to rise much during the day. Snow is forecast for today and into the weekend and so if it carries on falling like it is now then conditions for the weekend will be excellent.

Today the Prince No1 gondola is taking a rest, with the No2 taking over duties.

The Kagura resort is currently running a "Enjoy Kagura Powder Week (Kagura Powder otanishimi week) campaign. Today and tomorrow and also next week (Monday 21st - Friday 25th January) a one-day Kagura lift ticket will be sold at a discount price. Adults are 3000 yen and children are 1500 yen for the day.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 17th January 2008, 9:30am
Weather conditions: Heavy snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Looks like it is going to be a mid-winter day today here in Shiga Kogen. Minus double figures in all areas, with some places reporting -13 degrees. So it is very cold and fairly low visibility.

And the great news this morning is that we are also seeing some heavy snow come down at the moment. Not much snow overnight, but it has been falling since earlier on this morning and is falling as if it really means it - the cm should soon be stacking up quite nicely if it continues like this. In fact, there is about 10cm of fresh snow since earlier on this morning. Keep it coming!

There should be lots of powder to find out there this morning.

Night operations today at the following resort areas:

Excellent snow conditions again yesterday with snowfalls in the afternoon continuing the run of clear skies in the mornings, and snow in the afternoons.

Last night however the clouds cleared and it was a very cold night, with temperatures reaching minus 29 degrees. No snow overnight and a beautiful blue bird morning this morning.

Snow forecast again for later this evening and all day tomorrow so take advantage of this rare blue bird day and snap up your postcard pictures of the amazing Daisetsu mountain range and Furano township.
