Furano Now!

Wednesday 17th January 2007, 8:19am
Weather conditions: Light snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Just a dusting of snow overnight and only a couple of centimetres fell yesterday daytime. It is snowing lightly at the moment but it seems like the heavy precipitation has moved off for now. The temperature is -9 at mountain base this morning. Temperatures are predicted to remain low for the next week but we should be seeing a bit more of the sun, which we have been missing here recently. Take your camera with you today as you may get to see the fantastic views across to the Daisetsuzan range this afternoon.

Niseko Now!

Wednesday 17th January 2007, 8:28am
Weather conditions: Clear skies.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Some more blue skies again today, with Youtei-san making an appearance. There is a very light fresh layer of up to 5 cms, but other than that no considerable snow over night.

Yesterday saw a further 5 cms of fresh snow falling during the day.

The peak was the pick of the day, with fresh-lines being had for most that ventured to the top, although a slight word of caution as there is minimal avalanche danger in some areas off the peak. Please ask Ski-Patrol for more details if you decide to venture up.

Snow is forecast for later in today, continuing over night and into tomorrow morning. Now's the time to get out there and enjoy the blue-skies and the dry snow conditions.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Wednesday 17th January 2007, 8:46am
Weather conditions: Light snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday the clouds cleared away almost completely and it turned into a very fine and sunny day in the region with fantastic views on offer. Clouds did move in late night and this morning, while it is raining in neighbouring Minamiuonuma, it is light (wet) snow here in Yuzawa early on. It is fairly mild at the moment with the thermometer telling me it is +3 outside. The forecast doesn't have snow lined up for us today and so the snow that is falling now looks likely to clear up and it be a cloudy day.

Look for the next snowfall from tomorrow night into Friday - a good topup before the weekend would be good...   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 17th January 2007, 8:49am
Weather conditions: Overcast Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
At 0700 hrs. the sky in the Hime Kawa valley was obscured (a surface layer of cloud i.e. fog prevents observation of the sky) with snow falling at about 1 cm per hour of accumulation. The temperature is hovering around the 0C mark. Wind is calm from all directions. The 10 cm of relatively dense snow that fell overnight should freshen up piste. The visibility is another matter.
The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) the 0700 hr. reading is:
Sky: Obscured
Temperature: Present: -0.5 C
Maximum: 9 C
Minimum: -5.5 C
Wind: calm
Precipitation: S 1
Barometer and trend: 919 hPa and falling slowly
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 10 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 73 cm
Foot penetration: 28 cm
Surface: new snow, size 1 mm
Density of new snow: 70 kilograms per cubic metre
Above Tree Line: Considerable

At Tree Line: Moderate moving to Consideerable with continued snowfall

Below Tree Line: Moderate

Travel Advisory:
With the moderate amount of new snow (at least in the valley bottom we have increased the the "Hazard" a level. With the limited visibility and unknown winds at higher elevations the actual hazard may be higher. The forecast is for the precipitation to taper off this morning but for the temperatures to warm to 5C in the valley. Even with cloud cover the sun continues to have a marked affect on the snow.
If you do travel outside of the controlled area, be aware of the potential for "remote triggering" of avalanches. Also in poor visibility be aware of what the wind may be doing above you to load start zones. The ridge top winds (when observable), even when calm and light in the valley and the upper mountain, have been at least gusting to moderate such that snow was observed to being transported. the underlying message is be aware what is above you and what is happening there.

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 17th January 2007, 9:23am
Weather conditions: Cloudy and overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Hurrah its snowing and with the looks of it it might just snow for the rest of the day. So far we've had just 1cm of snow overnight and this morning but by the looks of things theres definitely more to come with it being very cloudy and overcast out there. Visibility is not so good today with the top of Naeba under a thin layer of cloud and the temperature is at a not so chilling -1.

There doesn't seem to be much in the way of wind movement or even a breeze today and the snow is falling pretty much vertically. Lets hope it continues like this throughout the day to give us a decent layer of snow to play with.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Wednesday 17th January 2007, 9:44am
Weather conditions: Overcast with some light precipatation (snow at higher levels)
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday the sun came out and produced some more warm midday temperatures (around 8deg C) which caused further settling and melting of the snow pack. The warm temperatures continued thoughout the night, so no real crust was formed.

This morning it is snowing and sleeting at the village level with snow falling on all upper mountains at a fairly light rate. The forecast for the remainder of the day is for overcast and light snow at times continueing through to Thursday evening.

The avalanche danger in the alpine is still considerable with all of the winds of late. Caution is still advised at the tree line, especially when below alpine run out zones.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 17th January 2007, 10:34am
Weather conditions: Light snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
As predicted a snowy start to the day today in Nozawa. The snow falling presently in the village looks quite wet and at some stages last night light rain fell but it looks as though on the mountain the snow is fine. The visibility is poor and it seems there are very few people heading to the mountain this morning, so there will plenty of space on the runs. The temperatures on the mountain are –3C at Yamabiko and –4C at Uenotaira. The Village is between 1C and 2C. The base depths remain unchanged with 170cm and 140cm at Yamabiko and Uenotaira.

The forecast is still for snow to persist over the next two days with about 20cm predicted for Thursday.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Wednesday 17th January 2007, 11:07am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Clouds moved in overnight and this morning snow started falling and we have probably had a few cm of new snow since then. At the moment that snow has stopped falling and it is just cloudy and that is what the forecast has told us to expect for the day.

This morning is milder than it has been the past week with the temperature just under 0 at the moment. It looks like tomorrow will be changeable weather with a chance of sun as well and colder temperatures with more of the same on Friday and a decent chance of good weather for the weekend.   Read more ...
