Yuzawa Now!

Wednesday 17th February 2016, 7:59am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 160cm
NOTE: Due to some necessary server maintenance work, some of the Now reports on Thursday may appear much later than usual. Apologies in advance!

Morning from Yuzawa.

It's a cloudy start to the day. Not snowing at town level yet, though looks light it might be higher up - and snow is expected today.

Yesterday was a fine day with lots of sunshine and blue skies with cloud and it did get fairly mild though happily not the warmth of the end of last week and weekend. Snow conditions were pretty good early morning - not quite as good once the sun got onto it later in the day. But still a fine day to be outside.

It is just under 0 degrees as I write this report and will keep cold today.

Looking outside it seems that there was a bit of snowfall overnight here with just a very slight dusting to be seen in places. And Maiko resort are reporting 5cm of fresh, again presumably that is on the upper Okusoeji area of their resort; but I notice that Kagura are reporting just a dusting/sprinkling.

Right now it feels like it could start snowing any time... here's to some decent snowfall today please!

Tomorrow clear and sunny skies are forecast.

Niseko Now!

Wednesday 17th February 2016, 8:31am
Weather conditions: Snow clouds
New snowfall: 38cm
Snow depth: 170cm
NOTE: Due to some necessary server maintenance work, some of the Now reports on Thursday may appear much later than usual. Apologies in advance!

A very good morning to you from Niseko.

And how about this... the most snow in one day so far this season!

I can't say that I was expecting quite this much, but more than happy to see it out there on the ground - all 38cm of it! We enjoyed lots of heavy snowfall yesterday and through the night so that we are able to wake up to all this lovely fluffy snow outside this morning.

Check out this bit of the Avalanche Report: "Hirafu Peak Ridgeline: couldn't access by grooming machine, -10°C, over 60cm new snow"!

I think this is probably enough for more than a complete refresh (you reckon?) and we should be set for some very exciting fun this morning... if the winds don't cramp our style of course. And it looks like we might be ok on that front this morning. Rather than wind, it's probably 'moving snow' that might delay some lifts for a short time.

There's more regular snowfall due through until Friday, maybe a short break for a bit as we enter the weekend but back to snow from Sunday.

Things are looking very good and re-assuring to see that the weekend was just a short blip on the big picture.

Lots of snow is a whole lot of fun, but there's inherent dangers of course - keep calm and take care.

Resort specific lift opening news at time of writing (subject to change during the day):

Niseko Grand Hirafu
Niseko HANAZONO Resort
Niseko Village
Niseko Annupuri
All resorts appear to be opening as normal at the start of the day. Some may be slightly delayed as lift operators dig down into the snow to find them!

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6.00am: -6°C, 30cm new crystal snow, no snowdrift development. Moiwa 800m: -10°C, NW10m/s, 40cm new snow, snowdrift development. Mikaeri 740m: -9.5°C, WNW1.4m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NW14m/s. Kamui Cape W10m/s, 1005hPa, wave 1.4m. Hirafu Peak Ridgeline: couldn't access by grooming machine, -10°C, over 60cm new snow. Annupuri 1000m: -10°C, WNW15m/s, too much snow to run grooming machines on.

Biggest snow event this winter and the grooming machines are having difficulty getting up and down the slopes. Atmospheric pressure gradient is a little steep and snow drifts are growing moderately above 800m. From observation and data, above 900m SE through SW cornice, knoll and other steep slopes, the avalanche risk is high. Upper Haru no Taki, Yu no Sawa Annupuri side there is possibility of huge avalanche, fracturing deep on Feb 14 layer.

This avalanche report is produced using both historical and current observations and data, and past accident history. It has proved to be reasonably accurate since started and we ask that you don't disregard the information.

Gates 1, 2, 3, 4 will be closed. Other gates yet to be determined. Please respect the patrols decisions. Don't venture out of bounds late in the afternoon. If you get lost you will be in big trouble. Snow is good but deep. Be prepared with snowshoes and skins. Don't go on any long expeditions today. Don't duck ropes and try to enter closed gate areas. Have a good day.

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 17th February 2016, 8:42am
Weather conditions: Today has quite a thick cloud cover at a higher level than the tops of the mountains.
New snowfall: 2cm
Snow depth: 120cm
Good morning from Naeba everybody.

Well we've had a light dusting of snow overnight equaling just over 2 cm of snow in the base area. This should hopefully keep things fresh today especially as temperatures look set to stay below 0 degrees Celsius today for the first time in a fair while.

The weather forecast is saying that it should be snowing currently and for the rest of the day. Whilst this has not yet come true it certainly looks like it could be possible due to the cloud and low enough temperatures that we have today.

Thursday and Friday look like they should have pretty nice weather conditions with heavy snow predicted over the weekend. This was previously predicted to be rain so this snow is something to be extra happy about as long as it turns up!

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 17th February 2016, 8:43am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: 5cm
Snow depth: 125cm
NOTE: Due to some necessary server maintenance work, some of the Now reports on Thursday may appear much later than usual. Apologies in advance!

Hello and good morning from Hakuba where we have a bit more fresh snow and hoping for some decent snowfall during the day today.

Light snow during the day yesterday, nothing major, but this morning the snow has started up again and there's up to 10cm of snow being reported on upper slopes by a few resorts, with mostly just a few cm around base areas (47 report 10cm at base too).

It's coming down pretty good at the moment and with snow forecast for the day hopefully we can get some decent numbers in.

The forecast shows clearer conditions tomorrow and perhaps Friday before a return to more snowfall over the weekend (with a bit of a worry of possible rain on Saturday unfortunately - but let's deal with that possibility later on!)

On Saturday it's the 46th Fire Festival at Happo-one, over on their Nakiyama lower area. Lots of festival-type events going on including a torchlit skiing display, performances and fireworks. It's usually fun to see and mingle with the crowds. Anyway, that starts at 7:30pm over at Nakiyama (Happo-one) - on Saturday 20th.

Might see you there!

New snowfall: 3cm
Snow depth: 80cm
NOTE: Due to some necessary server maintenance work, some of the Now reports on Thursday may appear much later than usual. Apologies in advance!

Morning from Nozawa and it's back to snow again today.

Fine weather yesterday and some good conditions to enjoy as well. It got fairly mild, though not like what we had last week thankfully, and there was definitely some snow melt going on but now that we are back to snow again today we should be getting some good cm in today. As much as possible, as tomorrow we're going to be back to clear skies and sunshine again.

The weather seems somehow just really confused this season. And not making it any easier for us either!

Anyway, snow falling now and falling quite heavily as well. Fingers crossed it continues.

Grandeco Now!

Wednesday 17th February 2016, 9:01am
Weather conditions: Cloud cover, fog
New snowfall: 18cm
Snow depth: 250cm
Good news this morning from a very snowy Grandeco area.

There's 18cm of fine fresh powder snow at the base of the resort here, and more higher up on the mountain.

Lots of snow falling both here in the Ura Bandai region and also to the south in the Inawashiro area this morning and it feels mid winter once again.

Having said that it doesn't feel quite as low this morning, perhaps due to the fact that there's hardly any wind at all.

According to the forecast, snowfall should continue until tomorrow morning.

Madarao Now!

Wednesday 17th February 2016, 9:12am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: 4cm
Snow depth: 130cm
Yesterday I said that it should be a good morning - and it most certainly was. Beautiful weather to be outside sliding down the snow.

We're back to snow this morning. Just a few cm so far, but there's a good chance of build-up during the day today, so look forward to reporting on that tomorrow morning. The snow is really coming down now as I write this actually, so looking good.

Tomorrow and maybe Friday too we'll probably have fine clear and sunny skies above us once again so if we can get a decent amount of snow in today, tomorrow should be great timing to be here.

Appi Kogen Now!

Wednesday 17th February 2016, 9:17am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: 11cm
Snow depth: 105cm
Waking up to a moderate snowfall here is rather exciting. Currently cloudy conditions with quite a bit of snow falling. Temperatures today will be in the -8 to -10 range. Yesterday was on/off light snow showers which did start accumulating by mid morning, however most of what we got came overnight. Today and tomorrow will hopefully bring over 40cm of snow.

Limited runs are open on the mountain and with the Olympic trials going on this weekend you can expect even fewer runs open. The new snow will certainly help overall conditions but I’m wondering when the Sailer and main gondola will open. Conditions aren’t that bad but since the heavy rain we had last weekend I haven’t been able to get anywhere near the top of the mountain to take a closer look. We’re all hoping its going to reopen before the weekend arrives.

Conditions for the next few day are looking good with cloudy skies, steadily rising temperatures and a lot of snow.

Great time to be out there right now.

Currently planned operating lifts:

- Central Number 1 quad
- Number 2 lift A
- Number 2 lift B
- Number 3 lift B
- Number 3 lift C
- Sailer Number 2

Zao Now!

Wednesday 17th February 2016, 9:17am
Weather conditions: Cloud, fog, snow
New snowfall: 22cm
Snow depth: 140cm
And a decent amount it is!

22cm of snow outside my place here this morning so that means that and more on the mountain for a very welcome decent refresh.

There's some other good news this morning - the evening 'Light Up' Ropeway service is going to be re-starting from this evening - though the Ropeway folk are being clear up front that the ice monsters did take a hit over the weekend and are once again 'starting to grow' with this new snowfall. Basically, don't expect them to be perfect.

Clearer skies due tomorrow with a return of the snow clouds at the weekend.

Information as of Wednesday 17th February 2016 (subject to change)

All planned lifts are operating this morning.
The Karamatsu pair lift does not operate on weekdays.

Utopia: 85cm
Chuo: 140cm

Back to snow this morning and it's coming down heavily right now - at this rate it'll quickly build up. It only started this morning but there's already 5cm outside my place which is very encouraging.

Snow forecast for the day with clearer skies once again tomorrow.

After that, the next snowfall is forecast for Saturday and Sunday.

Myoko Now!

Wednesday 17th February 2016, 10:12am
Weather conditions: Fully overcast
New snowfall: 20cm
Snow depth: 190cm
It's back: the snow started falling this morning, and it's going hard at the moment. About 20cm has fallen so far, and it keeps coming down. Why it took so long to get Myoko-like, we don't know, but we don't - as long as we get more on the ground we're happy, in this crazy year of nothing expected.

It is pretty heavy snow, it has to be said.

The resort reports are in the minus, but it's pretty mild. That's not entirely bad, of course; some heavy snow might improve things in the backcountry, and weigh down those trees that are still sticking up.

Hope to have a bigger figure for the total snowfall by tomorrow.

Minakami Now!

Wednesday 17th February 2016, 10:47am
Weather conditions: Snow clouds
New snowfall: 25cm
Snow depth: 170cm
Big snow coming in here right now at the base of Tenjindaira. Will be up top very shortly but the snow is accumulating rapidly, winds not too strong, everything open and probably 20 people on the resort.

All resorts are likely getting some snow here but its very heavy at Tenjindaira.

Tomorrow looks like good weather after a full day of this but we shall see.

All snow resorts in Minakami now all (at least part) open - except when weather conditions prevent them from:

Furano Now!

Wednesday 17th February 2016, 12:14pm
Weather conditions: Mostly cloudy
New snowfall: 5cm
Snow depth: 280cm
It was snowing heavily for the first half of the morning but has eased off and now there is just light snow coming down. Earlier on the visibility was poor due to the snow and cloud rolling down to the village, however the low cloud has gone and there is some sun shining down upon the resort. It looks like a great day out there.

There are some light winds, which are expected to pick up pace and become strong this afternoon, but they should have decreased again by tomorrow morning. Heavy snow is on the forecast for tonight and then continuous light snow through Thursday and Friday.
