Myoko Now!

Thursday 17th December 2009, 8:04am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
If there was a one-meter base, today would be a nice light powder day—about 10cm of really nice, night snow fell overnight. We don't yet, of course, and the promised heavy snow is still pending.

It looks good for today on, though. It should be getting colder as the cold air from the north continues to move into the area. If nothing else, it looks like it should snow today, with heavy cloud cover and a few flakes coming down all the time.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 17th December 2009, 8:48am
Weather conditions: Cloud, sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Yuzawa. So what's the news? Perhaps surprisingly, right at this moment the sun is out though there is still a lot of cloud around but it's a bright morning. We have had just a slight snowfall overnight perhaps a few cm in areas but certainly nothing major. It looks like it is sunny up at Naeba as well early on but Kagura is reporting 10cm of new snow and 3cm at Mitsumata.

The forecast that we keep mentioning is now on top of us and everyone is highly expectant that today and tomorrow we might be in for some heavy snow. 20-40cm is forecast between now and 9am tomorrow morning and more beyond that.

It's around +1 degrees at the moment.

We will update this page later on this evening with the latest.

Just as an extra note, yesterday saw some snowfall in Niigata city and other low-lying areas of Niigata prefecture. Such a waste to see the snow falling there and of course we feel left out but early season this often happens. Hopefully very very soon it will be doing the business here too.

Update PM:

Well it has been a curious day weather wise. The snow hasn't turned up in Yuzawa - and we have seen some pretty good weather actually. 'Good' as in blue skies and cloud... so, actually, bad! If that makes sense!

It looks like the areas to the north of Yuzawa are having snowfall today again and it just isn't quite coming down to this area yet. So when is this snow going to arrive? Forgive the overuse of the word, but, hopefully by the end of tonight it will be snowing here. 10-20cm is forecast for the mountain areas of southern Niigata. Compare that to the 20-40cm that is forecast for the regions to the north of Yuzawa and it looks like we will be repeating the pattern of the last few days. It looks like areas in the north of Niigata prefecture might expect even more.

Anyway, so hopefully we'll get that snow overnight and the forecast is still looking very positive for the next 3 days or so. More tomorrow morning...   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Thursday 17th December 2009, 8:58am
Weather conditions: Sun, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
What's this?! The sun is out! I wasn't expecting that, though perhaps it is just the calm before the storm. The official Niigata local forecast has us down for up to 40cm of snow in the next 24 hours so hopefully those clouds will be moving in soon and by later on in the day it will be snowing with some purpose.

Kagura this morning have 10cm of new snow with just a few cm at Tashiro and Mitsumata and also down here in the village. It's chilly but just above zero and likely to get colder later on in the day.

From today at Naeba the Gondola and Takenokodaira pair lift will be operating so there will now be that course high on the mountain open as well as the runs at the bottom of the resort in front of the hotel.

At Kagura the Mitsumata Number 1 quad lift and Mitsumata No 3 pair lifts are open - but the Mitsumata area isn't open for skiing yet, the lifts are basically open to get you to the Gondola and the resort is calling them 'connecting courses'. Once up at Kagura the quad lift is servicing the few runs off from the top there.

Both resorts will open up more lifts and courses just as soon as they can with the Tashiro area still due to open this Saturday.   Read more ...

Zao Now!

Thursday 17th December 2009, 9:22am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
You might have seen on the national news last night that there was heavy snow falling in Yamagata. There was, but not in Zao! It seems that some parts of Yamagata got up to 50cm of snow yesterday and some of these areas aren't even high up mountain areas, but here in Zao we only got a small amount of new snow. Perhaps up to 10cm or so.

This morning there are a lot of clouds around but at times the sun is showing through the clouds creating some very pretty landscapes. It is not snowing at the moment but it should be later on in the day with that healthy snowfall still lined up on the forecasts.

The resort is still just open the one part of the Chuo area open.... more opening up just as soon as they can.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 17th December 2009, 9:33am
Weather conditions: Cloudy with light snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Finally Nozawa is open! (If only the top runs as yet). It is a cloudy day with light snow falling on the mountain and in the village. Good snow fell over night on the mountain and over 140cm is expected to fall between now and Sunday night, so fingers crossed!

The temperatures are -6C at the summit and -2C down in town. There is a 20km/h North-easterly breeze. Visibility on the mountain is not great. The base depth at Yamabiko is 45cm.

Winds will increase over the day today, possibly reaching 55km/h early tomorrow morning before easing again. Snow should continue to fall all weekend and we don't expect the sky to clear before next Tuesday!

Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
15-20cm or so of new snow to report this morning in Shiga Kogen. Great snow too - it's very cold this morning and the snow is fluffy and definitely worth a ride.

There's still not enough for the resorts to fully open but hopefully over the next few days things will change considerably and bigger areas will be able to open as we have heavy snow forecast over the next 48 hours. A chance of up around 1m of fresh snow in the next 4 days? Bring it on!

Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Will these snowfalls ever end? I sure hope not!
It's getting very deep up there with waist deep turns and plenty of faceshots. Just beware that if you fall in this stuff it can be very hard to get back up as there's nothing solid to push yourself up on.
Another 30cm+ since last report and it's still snowing out there. Plenty more forecast through to about Tuesday when things should settle a bit for a few days before the next big storm expected to come through around Christmas or Boxing day.
The lower part of Hanazono has opened for the first time today so be sure to head over for some awesome off-piste freshies.
I've been in Niseko for quite a few seasons now and truly the conditions up there at the moment are amongst the best I've ever experienced.

Current Official Snow Depths:

Grand Hirafu:
Top - 180cm
Bottom - 100cm

Niseko Village:
Top - 110cm
Bottom - 60cm

Hakuba is presently getting a good amount of SNOW! Yay! It is snowing now and we received about 15 cm of snow overnight. It is very nice to see the ground and trees in white.
Snow is expected to continue throughout the day as well.
The forecast is for continued snow over the next three days so hopefully this will allow all the resorts to open all their terrain.

It finally looks like winter has arrived and we are all happy to see the snow come, especially as we can now have a white christmas.

Minakami Now!

Thursday 17th December 2009, 10:43am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Colder this morning with another light dusting last night but again not amounting to anything significant. It started off clear and bright but as the day progresses the cloud has been moving in.

Houdaigi have been taking advantage of the colder weather by making a bit of snow over the last few days but the main slope still looks decidedly grassy and they'll be praying or this big dump to hit tomorrow. At present they are still aiming for a Saturday opening but it is going to be touch and go.

Tenjin still has two of the top lifts working.

It's looking like it should remain cold through the weekend and into next week. Touch wood that the snowmen on the forecast and not merely decoration.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Sunny with blue sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another great day in Furano. Blue skies and plenty of sunshine. Once again the temperatures are really cold which is keeping the snow in great condition. No snow arrived yesterday but there is around 50cm forecast for today/tomorrow - we shall have to wait and see what eventuates. All lifts are operating on the Furano Zone except the high speed quad chair. Night skiing is until 8:30pm on the Prince Romamnce lift. Once again groomers were operating in the Kitanomine Zone.   Read more ...
