Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 17th April 2012, 9:01am
Weather conditions: Clear and sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Well it was just cloudy overnight so no rain and this morning the sun is out over Nozawa and it looks all set to be a nice sunny (or sort of spring-like overcast) and warm day with a high of around 12 degrees in the village. There's a bit of a wind early on but nothing to affect the resort which is open as planned this morning.

As the resort said yesterday, people have been spotted out skiing in t-shirts... I would expect we might see more of that today.

We can probably expect similar conditions right through the week and into the weekend as well.

Current Official Snow Depths Numbers:

Minakami Now!

Tuesday 17th April 2012, 9:15am
Weather conditions: Overcast/Sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Warm spring weather in Minakami again this morning. The cloud and sun are battling for supremacy at the moment but the forecast has us down for some light rain later so the cloud is likely to come out on top this time. Soft, spring snow up at Tenjin but it is still skiing well for mid-April. The week ahead is looking like we could have more rain showers on and off for the next few days with some occasional sunshine. Warm temperatures the whole time.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Tuesday 17th April 2012, 9:18am
Weather conditions: Clear and sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is another typically bright, sunny start to the day here in Yuzawa and all is calm with hardly any wind at all. At the time of writing it is about 10 degrees in town with a high of 14C forecast for later on in the day.

In a previous report I mentioned how much snow there was still around even down at town level and how it hasn't warmed up as much and as quickly as it usually does. It's definitely continuing that way at the moment as quite a lot of back roads that are usually well clear by now still have a significant amount of snow on them and are still blocked. While there are some patches in the snow appearing - usually with the help of digger machines breaking up the snow - there is still almost complete snow cover on all of the resorts around town top to bottom. That's really impressive for mid-April and I can remember some years when the snow line has been way higher than it is now.

It does look like temperatures are going to be rising over the next few days and we might even hit 20 degrees before the weekend. Generally it should be weather conditions similar to what we are seeing at the moment.

Still chilly up top early in the morning though - earlier on at 7:30am Kagura were reporting a temperature of +3C.

Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 17th April 2012, 9:26am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a generally overcast day with some nice looking clouds making for some dramatic scenery in the evening above Hakuba.

It's a cloudy morning again above the village early on but very mild with a temperature of around 9C at 9am. Cloudy with that chance of a spot or two of rain later is what the latest forecast seems to be sayinf for the day, but from tomorrow we should be back to clearer skies and the sun warming things up. We seem to have sidestepped the rain I mentioned yesterday and this morning while I can see some blue sky to the north there is also a fair bit of grey cloud over Shiga Kogen. There is still a chance of some light rain today, but I think we might be able to avoid it. Let's hope so. The forecast tells us to expect similar weather conditions tomorrow as well.

Zao Now!

Tuesday 17th April 2012, 9:45am
Weather conditions: Blue sky and cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
This morning we have blue sky and some fast-moving fluffy (mostly white) clouds moving over the area - though hardly any wind in the village. The sun is out and it's another nice spring morning in Zao.

The local forecast does give us a chance of some rain later on today, but hopefully that won't last long and we should be back to sunny skies tomorrow.

It's quiet out there for the most part right now. For many it's like a transition part of the year as lots of locals start to prepare for the 'green season'. There's still skiing and boarding up until the end of Golden Week on 6th May of course, so let's not forget about that!

Naeba Now!

Tuesday 17th April 2012, 9:52am
Weather conditions: Cloud, sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
I thought I would give the Naeba Now page a quick update with the latest.

The weekend was quite a busy one, especially up at Kagura. With less skiing options available and arguably the best snow in the region up at Kagura, it proves very popular at the end of the season. There were a fair few people at Naeba as well.

Spring continues to take control here in this region with mild temperaturs and spring-like winds. This morning started off with blue skies over Naeba and Kagura, but since then some cloud has appeared above us. Some forecasts tell us that there's a chance of rain as well, but it doesn't feel like that will happen. We can probably expect warm, clear and sunny conditions through into and including the weekend.

Over at Kagura, here's a run down of what lifts are moving weekdays at the moment:

Mitsumata Ropeway
Mitsumata No1 quad lift
Mitsumata No2 pair lift
Kagura Gondola
Kagura No1 quad lift
Kagura No4 pair lift
Kagura No5 pair lift (this top lift plans to be open until 6th May)
Tashiro Ropeway
Tashiro No1 pair lift
Tashiro No2 pair lift
Tashiro No1 quad lift
Tashiro No6 pair lift
Tashiro No8 pair lift

Next update on this page on Friday with the latest for the weekend.

We will update this Naeba Now report before each weekend right through until the season at Kagura, and in the meantime we will be keeping the Yuzawa Now! reports going on a daily basis right through until the last ski lift stops moving.

If you don't already know, the Yuzawa Now! page can be found here:
Yuzawa Now - updated daily until late May

Furano Now!

Tuesday 17th April 2012, 9:55am
Weather conditions: Sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We are into the final 3 weeks of the season now and there is still plenty of fun to be had out there. The mountain is still skiable from top to bottom on the Furano side. It is a nice warm spring day at the moment. The sun is hitting the slopes nicely with blue sky and some broken cloud mixed in.    Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Tuesday 17th April 2012, 10:02am
Weather conditions: Cloud, fog
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It doesn't feel like mid-winter of course, but it's definitely a change this morning.

We were greeted with some thick fog and really poor visibility on the mountain earlier on and while that has improved a bit it's still much more of a grey day than we have been having of late - even reports of some light snowfall earlier on, though right now it is just cloudy.

The latest forecast seems to be cloud for tomorrow followed by sunny conditions into the weekend and we will also still likely see those temperatures rising.

Current lift operations (17th April 2012):

Grand Hirafu & Hanazono:
Ace Quad Lift No2
King Hooded Triple Lift #3
King Lift #4
The Hirafu Gondola will operate on 21st, 22nd, 28th, 29th, 30th April, and also from 3rd May until 6th May.

Annupuri Gondola
Jumbo No1 quad
Jumbo No3 pair
Jumbo No4 pair

Grand Hirafu and Annupuri both plan to be open until 6th May.
The Hanazono and Niseko Village areas are now closed.
Niseko Village plans to re-open for the Golden Week holiday period from Sunday 29th April until Sunday 6th May.

Official snow depths:

Grand Hirafu:
