Snow and weather reports posted on Monday 28th May 2018

The mixed weather continues today. Looking down onto the valley away from the mountains it is all blue skies but turn the other way and the clouds are gathering. They were present all yesterday but as threatening as they looked, nothing materialized. This is probably a good thing as by mid afternoon the temperature had crept up to a pleasant 2 degrees. Once the sun went in it got a lot colder.
This morning hasn't felt as cold as previous mornings but it was pretty chilly last night with a dusting of snow up very high.
The slopes are still in good condition. The grooming and the cold nights sets them up well for the day and as the temperature rises they soften up a little to provide fast grippy skiing.
Conditions should be good up on the hill today, with sunshine, light winds and great visibility combining to make decent conditions for skiing and boarding.
Temperatures should be relatively cool today and right now it is 0 degrees in the village.
The forecast for the coming days predicts a chance of snowfall tonight with good conditions on Wednesday and Thursday followed by a good chance of decent snowfall around Friday just before the weekend.
Yesterday was a bit of a mixed bag in the valley with light snow, rain, sleet.... everything but the big fluffy flakes we all want.
Tiny light snowflakes were coming down this morning but very minimal and only a light dusting on the cars, and Goryu reported 0 cms new snow so we can assume it started falling not long before morning. Trees are white though, so there has been some snow since yesterday.
Depending on where you look there are mixed reports for today/tonight, we can expect some snow overnight but it seems we will be very lucky if we end up wading through the carpark tomorrow morning. Lets hope Hakuba delivers the goods yet again soon!
This morning I awoke to bluebird conditions with a great view of the mountain. I had a shower and when I got out it was snowing quite heavily. 30 minutes later the sun came out again. Since last report there's only been about 5-10cm of snow around the resort. Not quite enough to cover yesterdays tracks but the sun and incredible views today should make up for any lack of fresh snow. Some further snow showers can be expected today so enjoy the sun whilst it lasts. Quite a few events around the resort this week to celebrate the Chinese New Year holiday so be sure to keep an eye out for some great entertainment.
Current Official Snow Depths:

Niseko Avalanche Info No.63
Moiwa base 6am: -10℃, 5cm of overnight snowfall, clear sky. Coastal data: NNE7m/s at Benkei cape, ESE2m/s, 0.7m waves and 1018hPa at Kamui cape. Annupuri peak: N4m/s, -14℃, good visibility. Predicted wind at noon: NW10m/s. The sea and the mountain are in a mild winter weather pattern. According to snowpit observations, the snow particles are rounding from 20cm below surface, stabilizing. Newly developed snowdrifts are now stable and the general avalanche hazard in low. Peak gates are scheduled to open at 9:30. But always remember that outside the gates is not the ski resort anymore. Many risks are lurking in out of bounds area. Always be alert. Niseko area allows out of bounds riding only if passed through the gates. Strictly off limits areas are not to be entered at anytime. Any ropes must not be ducked. Have a nice day.
It was raining by lunchtime yesterday unfortunately and it was a bit of a miserable day through until evening. A bit of snow was falling late on it seems but nothing that has stuck this morning - at town level at least. Some of the resorts this morning have light snow as current conditions but sitting here in Yuzawa looking around all I can see if cloud... and even Kagura are reporting 0cm of snow this morning.
Anyway being more positive, we can perhaps expect some slight snowfall tonight and then around Thursday evening into Friday some potentially decent snowfall so fingers crossed that turns up and gives us a nice new soft blanket.
Conditions out there will be fairly hard and icy especially this morning.
After the cloud of yesterday, it is a much clearer morning early on here in Zao. The sun is out, just some cloud in the sky and not much of a wind at all, just a slight breeze.
The sun might be out but it is a colder morning than yesterday and currently around -7 degrees outside and more like -10 up at the top of the mountain. Those making their way up there are in for some fine views today.
Snow conditions remain good especially in higher areas. The forecast is telling us to expect some snow perhaps overnight and then the next few days up until the weekend. It does not look like it will be heavy though, more like sometimes snow showers and perhaps the clouds clearing at times as well.
Right now it is -3 degrees in the village and about -8 up on the mountain. No new snow to report since yesterday even at Kagura and I'll try not to mention the rain we saw yesterday. We can perhaps expect some snow tomorrow though, though not the 50cm or so we would like... perhaps the snowfall due towards the end of the week will give us more? We shall see.
So just a cloudy morning and the resorts opened as planned.
We were hoping for perhaps some snow overnight in Shiga Kogen, but it was not to be. No new snow to report and it is just a cloudy morning. Just a slight wind and currently it is around -7 degrees so at least it is keeping cold for the moment.
We all want to know when we can expect the next snowfall of course... perhaps tonight? looks like there might be a chance and then after that around Friday. Whatever, temperatures look set to keep fairly low which is always welcome.
Hope to bring you news of snow tomorrow morning!
Nighta this evening planned at the following resort areas:
- Ichinose Family
Official resort snow depths as of 16th February 10:
Only a light fall of 2cm new snow overnight in the village, but the weather has made up for this. Lots of sun and predominantly blue sky with some passing cloud. The mountain was beautifully groomed this morning and looked real good against a backdrop of blue sky. Perfect for photos. Read more ...

Overcast, light snow, getting stronger
Light snow had been falling through the day in Myoko with just a few cm of fresh snow on the ground at the moment... It is still pretty crusty off the piste, but looks like things should get better over the next few days with more snow forecast overnight though tomorrow will likely be just cloudy.
It's staying cold, too, with more snow forecast for the end of the week so let's hope for an excellent transition to the weekend!
