Yuzawa Now!

Wednesday 16th December 2009, 8:44am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday soon after the report went up the sun was out and we were treated to some faily clear and blue skies for a while. It clouded over later in the day and we got some rain/sleet later on in the evening - wet snow higher up with Kagura reporting 5cm of fresh snow this morning.

It is just cloudy at the moment with a temperature of 2 degrees at the moment in Yuzawa. Light snow on the cards for later in the day and then hopefully the snow bonanza that is still on the forecast will begin in style tomorrow.... it's still looking very positive for a very healthy snowfall in the region from tomorrow into Saturday. We'll keep you updated with the latest and another report this evening.

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 16th December 2009, 8:53am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No real new snow in the village to report this morning though higher up on the mountain it was snowing last night and Kagura resort say they got another 5cm or so up there. Down below it was a bit wetter than that unfortunately.

This morning it is fairly bright and cloudy. That snowfall due in the coming days is still there on the forecast and a fine number of cm to be expected as well - can we really expect around 100cm of snow between now and Sunday evening? Lets hope so!

It's all supposed to start later today and then kick in with style around tomorrow evening into Saturday.

Resort operations at both Naeba and Kagura remain unchanged.   Read more ...

Zao Now!

Wednesday 16th December 2009, 8:58am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a day of mixed weather but it was mainly just cloudy in the region. This morning sees some light snow in Zao Onsen but as it is snowing now it is not going to make much of a difference to the snow depth and once again resort operations remain the same.

Hopefully that will have changed within 48 hours as the cold front moves in and we can expect some good snowfall in the next few days. More of the resort will open up as soon as there is enough snow.

I have added some photos to the Zao Now page, see the latest photos below.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Wednesday 16th December 2009, 9:13am
Weather conditions: Cloud, fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday the weather turned out fine in the morning and then clouded over in the afternoon - we were expecting some snow last night, but it didn't turn up. This morning it is a fairly bright but cloudy morning again. Snow still packed on the roads and some cold temperatures down to around -6 at the moment. The struggle with the snow hopefully will soon be over - that forecast we have all been going on about is imminent! It should be snowing by the end of today and then be snowing pretty much through the weekend with the heaviest snowfalls forecast for Thursday night into Friday.

Not long now.

In the meantime the open resorts remain the same.   Read more ...

Myoko Now!

Wednesday 16th December 2009, 9:39am
Weather conditions: Increasingly cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A sunny day for a half the day yesterday brought down the snow level a little bit, although it stayed cold enough to put a few centimeters of ice on puddles. Some brief snow showers in the evening last night put maybe 5cm of fresh on, so let's call it a net loss of 5cm or so after the melting. At least we didn't lose that encouraging first solid base.

Seeing the No. 1 chair at Akakan string and ready to go is encouraging, though, along with a lot of cars in the parking lot for the people busily setting up the Sky Cable gondola. Things seem pretty well set, and the resorts are just doing the waiting game.

It's getting increasingly gray to the west and north, while it's still clear off to the east (I would say the Nagano side, but Myoko is surrounded on three sides by Nagano prefecture—towards Nagano City, then). The forecasts are only for snow, with heavy snows expected by Friday or so.    Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Wednesday 16th December 2009, 9:57am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Did anyone order half a metre of fresh, dry powder snow? Because it's been dropped off in Niseko ready for you arrival!
Heavy snow fell throughout the last 24 hours bringing the depth in Hirafu up to 1.5m which despite the slow start is about about average for this time of year.
Reports from those lucky enough to get up the mountain yesterday were of turns in up to hip deep powder and this morning that's likely to have increased to waist deep.
It's still snowing moderately and is expected to continue unabated until about Tuesday next week when we may have a brief respite to catch up on some snow clearing.
Finally this season Niseko is actually living up to the hype of being one of the snowiest ski resorts on the planet.

Current Official Snow Depths:

Grand Hirafu:
Top - 150cm
Bottom - 75cm

Niseko Village:
Top - 100cm
Bottom - 50cm

Top - 70cm
Bottom - 50cm   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Wednesday 16th December 2009, 10:17am
Weather conditions: Sunny with blue sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A fantastic morning in Furano today. Beautiful blue sky and sun all around the ski area across the valley to Tokachidake. The temperatures are very cold, so it would be advisable to put on an extra layer. The cold weather is keeping the powder in excellent condition. Snowfall is forecast for Furano today and much of Japan.

All lifts are operating in the Furano Zone except for the high speed quad chair. Night skiing is until 8:30pm on the Prince Romance lift. Kitanomine, while not open yet, has had some grooming done to the slopes, so opening shouldn't be too far away! Check out the Furano Now photos at the bottom of this page.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 16th December 2009, 10:18am
Weather conditions: partly cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Hakuba is presently sitting under partly cloudy skies with the upper slopes peeking through the clouds. No new fresh snow to report in the valley, however the ski resorts have been making snow and people have been making the first turns of the season. Watch out for those pieces of barren ground showing through and maybe your "rock skis/board" is best to use out there.

Early season turns are definitely not the best Hakuba has seen but we are not complaining! Any skiing at this stage is happily accepted. With more snow expected over the next few days the hills should slowly be able to open more terrain. Full on winter is right around the corner.

Today Hakuba 47 & Goryu are open (just the Alps Daira Chair and Line E chair). The one gelende of Alps Daira is open.

Happo-One is set to open tomorrow.

Tsugaike Hanoki chair and course are open at the top.

As more hills and courses become open we will be posting the information.

Official resort snow depths on 16th Dec 09:

15cm (Kurobishi/Usagidaira)
Hakuba Goryu:
40cm (Alps daira)
Hakuba 47:
Tsugaike Kogen:
50cm (Tsuganomori)   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Wednesday 16th December 2009, 11:46am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A very light dusting overnight - nothing to get excited about but just enough to prove the forecast right. It's cold today with cloud cover everywhere though the forecast isn't predicting any snow for down here. It is supposed to get much colder tomorrow.

It fingers crossed for the big dump to hit later in the week.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 16th December 2009, 12:41pm
Weather conditions: Sunny but some clouds rolling in from the North
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Temperatures are up a bit today in the Village and the Sun is out at the moment
Most places in the World are happy to see the Sun but at the moment we would prefer clouds and more snow

Looks like that is however on the Menu with a huge dump expected tomorrow night
Good timing with the opening of the Resort tomorrow

So time for the locals to make final adjustments to their houses and winter Vegetable patches before the snow comes in force

Looking forward to a few turns tomorrow
