Yuzawa Now!

Monday 16th April 2007, 8:41am
Weather conditions: Cloud, overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Cloud and overcast early on in Yuzawa, but we have rain forecast later on this morning and right through today and all of tomorrow as well. (Rain already reported from the Naeba region). Currently the temperature here is 7 degrees, and the forecast has that rising to around 10 mid-afternoon and similar tomorrow.

Due to poor visibility the top number 5 lift at Kagura is not opening early on (though if conditions improve during the day, there is a chance they might open it later on).

Naeba seem to have released new official snow depth numbers for different parts of their resort, ranging from 50cm on the course in front of the hotel (there is 0cm in much of the bottom part other than the open course) to 200cm reported up top.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Monday 16th April 2007, 9:25am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There have been a few spots of rain this morning and it is generally very cloudy. Unfortunately rain is forecast for a good part of today and also tomorrow as well... we can just hope that there is a chance that might be snow higher up especially overnight when temperatures drop.

The number 5 lift at Kagura is not opening early on, though if conditions improve during the day, there is a chance they might open it later on.

Open lifts at Naeba now are:
- Dragondola
- Prince Number 2 Gondola
- Number 5 quad

From today until 18th April the Challenge Course will be closed, so if you are wanting to use the Dragondola to get over to the Tashiro resort area you'll have to take the free shuttle bus from in front of the Prince hotel.

Naeba are now posting new snow depth numbers for different parts of their resort, ranging from 50cm on the course in front of the hotel (there is 0cm in much of the bottom part other than the open course) to 200cm reported up top.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Monday 16th April 2007, 15:40pm
Weather conditions: Cloudy and light rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is a cloudy with light rain and fairly chilly day out in Hakuba today. We had a few inches of fresh snow reported yesterday and atop the higher peaks the precipitation is falling as snow today. Not light fluffy flakes but the typical spring wet flakes that bond to everything. But hey... snow is snow and we are stoked! More light snowfalls expected all week so that is good news for the hardcore riders milking the spring conditions. Watch out for the bare patches out there and holes in the snowpack.

( See Backcountry Advisory Below )

Avalanche Hazard:

Above tree line: Considerable

Tree line: Moderate

Below tree line: Low

Backcountry Travel Advisory:
Some new snowfall above 1500m a.s.l. could be a potential area of concern for travellers as it A) may slide in steeper aspects and B) cover natural hazards like rocks. As mentioned earlier, shallow snowpack over bushes, rock outcroppings and bamboo (sasa) will be more likely to slide. Also take care in convex areas as there may be glide cracks formed and big holes in the snow. Wet, moisture laden snow will be more likely to slide on steep faces and this may also loose rocks/debris onto unwary travellers, so be careful under steep rock faces and cliffs.   Read more ...

The Spring rain has hit, with the cherry blosoms just starting to appear as Minakami slowly thaws out. The frequency of rafters, kayakers and mountainbikers is definately on the increase as the Tone River rises to Spring flows.

Houdaigi is now officially closed for the season but Tejindaira is planning on staying open until the end of Golden Week with all lifts still operating at present.   Read more ...
