Yuzawa Now!

Weather conditions: Light snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There has been some more snow overnight but early this morning the snow clouds seem to be easing, though it is still quite cold (-2 at the moment) and grey and some of the mountains are covered in cloud.

Taking a look at the forecast it looks like we might have seen the last of the snowfall for the moment, with cloud forecast for the rest of today, tomorrow and Friday. Temperatures look set to set stay low though so there may be a chance of more snow.

The return to winter like weather is making big news locally and giving resorts and everyone associated with them a real boost for the last part of the season - and of course everyone who wants to enjoy the skiing and snowboarding.... great conditions all round!   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Cloud

The winter like conditions continued yesterday and overnight - it was another cold night - meaning there is a bit more snow to report this morning.

Things are looking a bit brighter this morning and even though there is a fair bit of cloud still around there is also some blue patches in the sky especially in the northern regions and signs are that it may well be clearing up for the day. With the snow stopping, now is a great time to really get out there and enjoy the renewed good snow conditions.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 14th March 2007, 8:41am
Weather conditions: Mostly cloudy, light snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A mostly cloudy start to the day in Nozawa. Temperatures are still quite cold (-8C at Yamabiko) but winds have dropped to a more comfortable 25km/h. Yesterday was a fantastic day on the mountain as expected and today should be great as well. There will still be patches of untouched snow to be found as there were so few people on the mountain yesterday. The base depths are unchanged at 210cm at Yamabiko and 160cm at Uenotaira. The bulk of the resort is open and top to bottom skiing is possible.

The outlook is for some light snow to fall today and to be partly cloudy tomorrow. Light snow should fall again on Friday. Winds on Thursday and Friday will drop significantly to around 5-15km/h.

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 14th March 2007, 8:47am
Weather conditions: Partly cloudy with patches of sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Hakuba currently sits under partly cloudy skies with the sun really trying to break through. No new snow in the valley this morning but there was high winds yesterday which will have transported snow off ridges and into gullies and lee side aspects. The wind may have packed the fresh snow down quite a bit and scoured exposed ridges. Anyhing that warmed up and got slushy yesterday will be hard and crusty until the sun gets on it. High winds still present today and higher lifts are currently closed due to winds. Tsugaike is at 8:30 AM open to the top withthe gondola running but ths could change any moment if the wind picks up.

Our trained avalannche forecaster and weather guru is out until the 16th of March, so the in-depth weather observations from Hirakawa Study Plot are put on hold til then.

Todays's Avalanche Hazard safe out there powderhounds!

Above tree line: High

Tree line: High

Below tree line: Moderate

N.B. As was noted previously: these hazard levels will increase with the daytime warming and increased load and wind transportation (local increase of load).

Travel Advisory:

With winds being a major factor in lee side loading, due caution should be taken as we have had over 40cm of new snow over the last four days. Steep and convex aspects of terrain should be avoided as with wind loaded gullies and open faces. The development of wind lips and cornices will also be areas of instability and should be avoided. High exposed ridges will most likely be scoured by wind with hard packed snow off the side of the ridges. Be aware of points of tension near rocks and outcroppings where wind slab and ground surface meet.    Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was undoubtedly the best powder day of the season with over 70cm of powder at the upper ski areas. Since then another 30cm has fallen at the village and up to 50cm in the upper mountains. Another big powder day today!

This weekend should be epic for powder hounds with more snow forecast for Thursday and Friday. My recommendations would be Tenjindaira and Houdaigi which have enough steep terrain to handle the deep snow.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Wednesday 14th March 2007, 9:10am
Weather conditions: Snowing lightly.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The wind died down marginally yesterday afternoon. The Ace #2 lift opened around mid-day, however the upper lifts and Hanazono #2,#3 never opened.

Overnight and yesterday another 10+cms has fallen. Today its snowing lightly and expected to ease to snow showers today. The wind too has died down and expected to ease more during the day. The upper lifts and all gates are expected to open today but a bit later on.

Today will be another great one out there, with no-one riding the upper sections of the mountain for a couple of days and plenty of deep snow.

Tomorrow and the next day snow showers will continue with generally light-moderate wind.    Read more ...

Furano Now!

Weather conditions: Overcast, snow showers.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was awesome! Some of the deepest snow of the season, it was a bit heavier than earlier in he season due to the warmer weather but can't complain - it was fantastic and hard to beleive it is this good again after last week. Last night we received another 5cm here in town. The temperature was -4 this morning at 8am.

The forecast is giving heavy snow tomorrow and then snow showers everyday through the week.

The resort has updated the snow depths, on-piste measurements are up 10cm across the mountain.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 14th March 2007, 10:00am
Weather conditions: white sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
In case your interested, yes it is still snowing. The snow fall is a lot lighter now though and there's still a bit of wind with a nice -4 degrees at 900 meters.

Yesterdays conditions over at Naeba were pretty good, in fact that's an understatement...

The conditions yesterday at Naeba were excellent, I heard a few whinges about not being able to see anything, but if you waited for 30 seconds before you: launched from the wind lip, sky dived the drop off, rolled in to the steep powder bowl, etc... then everything was OK. A bit of patience and the gust of snow filled wind would disappear. Waist deep again in places, some incredibly deep sections of snow and not so many rocks.

Kagura didn't happen yesterday, only to the top of the ropeway, which shouldn't be the case today - with the wind speed dropping off, the top quad should be open by now this morning. Naeba Dai 1 gondola will be opening today, so definately some shenanigans in store up in those parts.

The Asagai half-pipe was supposed to be closing last Sunday due to the snow being too thin to put the pipe dragon through the pipe, but they've decided to keep it open due to the snow - still a bit of a dodgy shape at the moment, but once we have some warm temperatures, they've promised a re-shape, and to re-cut the transitions with the dragon. Reports of Asagai closing on the 25th (a week early) are also on hold at the moment - also due to this beloved snow!

Looking good.   Read more ...
