Yuzawa Now!

Sunday 14th January 2007, 7:34am
Weather conditions: Light snow, cloud, (some blue sky early on)
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There is probably around another 10cm or so of fresh snow overnight and light snow was falling early on this morning, but there are some breaks in the clouds at the moment and even some blue skies especially to the north.

The forecast still has us down for cloud/snow for the day, but it looks like it could be one of those days when the forecast gets it wrong and it turns out to be a fine sunny day. We shall see.

Whatever the weather during the day, a decent amount of fresh snow means that conditions should be very good pretty much everywhere today - good day to be out on the snow.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Sunday 14th January 2007, 7:43am
Weather conditions: Light snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another 15cm of fresh powdery snow lying on the ground here in town this morning. Should be another great day up there on the mountain. We have perfect conditions at the moment - fresh snow everynight, down to -15 overnight, and no wind. The long range forecast is predicting that these conditions will continue through the next week.

Can't wait to get up there and try the newly opened 'Kumatoshi C' course, apparently it is only open for short periods at the moment so that they can monitor the area where a crack appeared earlier in the season, so you have to listen out for the announcements through the day.

Niseko Now!

Sunday 14th January 2007, 8:38am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There was some light snow over night, which has built to some heavier snow that is falling right now. You can literally see the snow building up on your steps, reminding you of the shovelling you have to do later.....but also the amazing powder turns to be had.

Most lifts are open today, with visibility in the "White-out" zone of the spectrum, but that's the trade off for great powder snow sometimes.

With the previous week's continued snowfall, recommendations are for anywhere and everywhere, you will not be able to go wrong today, just take care in the minimised visibility.

The snow falls are likely to continue through-out the day, with further flurries over the next week.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Sunday 14th January 2007, 9:55am
Weather conditions: Snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow is falling quite heavily this morning in Nozawa as it has done since yesterday. The streets around the village are edged with fresh dry snow so on the mountain the runs will be nice and soft today. The cameras on the mountain show a very white day with low visibility. The wind is currently 15 km/h. The base depths remain unchanged at 160cm on Yamabiko and 130cm at Uenotaira. It is –6C on the mountain currently and a relatively warm 0C to +3C in the village

The forecast is for snow to stop during the day Monday, with the possibility of light snow and showers in the village on Monday night and Tuesday.

Naeba Now!

Sunday 14th January 2007, 10:15am
Weather conditions: grey sky with snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
An oh so lovely minus 4 in the village again this morning with quite a strong chilly breeze. There's been about 10cm of fresh snow since yesterdays report - though for sure a lot more on the mountain... Expect fresh tracks in most upper elevations if you get out there this morning. The sky is grey with a barely visible naeba.

It's been fresh tracks all week, what with a light sprinkling of snow down here in the 900m zone giving us that fresh foot of snow up top every morning.

Hakuba Now!

Sunday 14th January 2007, 10:31am
Weather conditions: Broken clouds
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --

A "Blue Bird" day is developing. This morning at the 0700 hr. snow-study plot reading time the sky was overcast. But in less than an hour the sky was developing a good case of the blues. The 24 hour snow fall was barely 2cm. Not exactly "shoulder flow" deep powder. But it should splash up over your bindings in a most satisfying manner. Driving conditions in the Hakuba townsite are generally good although the snow covered roads' intersections can be surprisingly slick. Pump those brakes.

1025 hrs.: the sky is still mostly cloudy, the summit of Iwa Dake is enveloped in cloud, but the main peaks' ridge (Shirouma, Shakushi, and Kara Matsu Dake) is visible through the many holes in the clouds.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m) the 0700 hr. reading is:
Sky: Overcast
Temperature: Present: -4.7 C
Maximum: -1 C
Minimum: -6 C
Wind: Calm
Precipitation: S -1
Barometer and trend: 922 hPa and rising rapidly
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24):2 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS):73 cm
Foot penetration: 20 cm

Above Tree Line: Considerable

At Tree Line: Moderate

Below Tree Line: Moderate

Travel Advisory:
The snowpack at the lower elevations is settling well. Based on limited direct observations it is still suspected that slabs are deep, and increasing in density and may stilll propagate wide in large Alpine terrain. Forested areas and chutes BTL may also still produce skier-triggered slabs on steep tensioned and cross loaded slopes.
If you do travel outside of the controlled area, be aware of the potential of "remote triggering" of avalanches and that the hazard is still "Considerable" above tree line and that a naturally triggered avalanche starting above tree line can easily come to rest well below tree line.
We will be in the uncontrolled terrain today doing snow studies so tomorrow we should be able to give a more data rich message. With the promise of good visibility and plenty of eager shovellers we hope to drive shafts deep into the snowpack in many locations.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Sunday 14th January 2007, 11:50am
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow continues to fall lightly in Minakami with a moderate cold wind from the North. The total accumulated snow from yesterday morning is around 10 cm in the village and 15cm in the upper mountains with patches of deep powder on Southern faces and valleys sheltered from the North wind.

The visibility today is quite good and the on piste skiing conditions are great. The backcountry riding in Minakami has started to open up with many of the creeks now filling in and small trees disappearing. Caution is advised on open steep terain, especially on South faces, after the recent snow loading from the North winds.

Weather conditions: Light snow early on, fine this afternoon
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After the fresh snow of yesterday, there was another sprinkling of snow earlier this morning but it has cleared up into a fine day here in Shiga Kogen. There are still clouds around and there have been periods of light snow falling but at the moment the sun is out and a fair bit of blue sky as well.

With the fresh snow on the courses, conditions out there are good today.   Read more ...
