Niseko Now!

Weather conditions: Snowing lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Reasonably strong winds and rising temperatures are causing the snowpack to consolidate. Luckily though it appears that Hokkaido will be spared the rain that is moving through Honshu. It is currently snowing lightly but this is expected to clear later today. The temperature in the village is likely to get just above zero today (a rarity at this time of year) but this milder air won't last long with sub zero temps returning tomorrow.

There is reasonably high avalnache danger due to the milder temps and as stated before care needs to be taken around buildings as they are likely to shed the snow on their roofs. The forecast has snow returning to the region on Monday and lasting most of the week.

Weather conditions: Cloud, occasional light rain
New snowfall: --

The rain clouds were holding off until early morning, but we had a bit of light rain just before - at the moment it has once more stopped raining and things aren't as bad as the reports last night. Let's hope it stays that way - we'll update the page again later in the day with more.

It was a fairly cold early morning but temperatures are set to rise to around 11 during the day at town level.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Saturday 14th January 2006, 9:33am
Weather conditions: No snowfall but low overcast clouds
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Not so rainy here today, as predicted, which is a good thing. It is warmer though and so rooftops are dripping steadily which gives an impression of rainy weather. If it tries to snow today and it remains warm then rain is surely a possibility. Not super busy here today either, visibility is good although it is overcast.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Saturday 14th January 2006, 9:59am
Weather conditions: Light rain, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Well, the rain was unavoidable.... it is raining here this morning even at the highest point at Yokoteyama. Luckily it is just light rain at the moment and so it isn't really affecting people who are out on the slopes - hopefully it will get no worse than it is right now or better still stop!

For the first time in while temperatures are also above zero, unseasonably warm for mid-January. Tomorrow should see colder temperatures and hopefully a return to snow/cloud rather than what we got this morning.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 14th January 2006, 11:19am
Weather conditions: Overcast with light rain and occasional mist
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We went to bed with light rain last night, and unfortunately, awoke to even more. Tempretures are high, making the snow pack heavy and unstable. Snow is wet but still plenty of it out there to enjoy, Bring a poncho or rain-coat!

**EXTREME AVALANCHE WARNING**
Warmer tempretures combined with rain on the snow pack will cause surface slides, as well as possible slides to the ground.
Extreme caution necessary.

In two recent pits in the Tsugaike area the following was found of southerly facing slopes.

05/01/08
Tsugaike shizenen, elevation 1800 metres, aspect S
Compression Test Easy @ 38cm from surface on new snow, needles, columns with some faceting occuring size 0.5~2 mm, sudden collapse.

Rutsch Block 2 @ 38 cm

Slope Test. Ski cut, produced size 1 soft slab, 40 cm hieght of crown, 20 x 20 metres in area, deposit stopped mid track.

05/01/09
Tsugaike Tengupara, elevation 2000 metres, aspect SE
Compression Test Easy ~ Moderate @ 33 & 37cm from surface on fist density new snow underlaying wind crust and overlaying 1 finger density snow, with some faceting occurring just above 1 Finger layer, size 0.5 mm, Progressive Compression

Rutsch Block 5 @ 33 cm

Multiple slope use resulted in no slides on South East facing slopes in the Tsugaike area.
