Furano Now!

Wednesday 14th February 2007, 8:31am
Weather conditions: Overcast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Last night was one of the coldest of the year so far, -19 at 8am this morning so you might want to wear an extra layer today! There has been no snow in the last 24 hours, yesterday was a nice clear day with great views across to the Daisetsuzan range. The snow would have warmed up a bit yesterday so with these low temps there may be some icy sections up there this morning, take care.

The forecast is giving an overcast day with the snow coming back this evening and lasting through to tomorrow morning.

Yesterday was one of those magic days. Great snow, good visibility and light winds. To the people who put down the tracks on Yoeti san well done, it would have been a great day for it!

There hasn't been any new snow overnight. The wind is forecast to build during the day and by this afternoon/evening watch for a strong southerly. It is expected to bring moderate to heavy snow overnight. All gates are open this morning but the peak may close later today as the storm develops.

This snow will continue into Thursday as will the strong winds. However during Thursday the winds should start to swing around and come from the northerly quarter.    Read more ...

As the daylight sowly increased through the grey sky dropping interspersed flurries of slushy snow and rain were observed. There was snow still on the trees just up the hill on Happo One and at 0830 hrs. it was snowing at the Tsuga Ike Lift Company gondola base. The lifts above the gondola top station on Happo One are closed. The reason given is that the wind is strong. The forecast is for continued precipitation until evening with temperatures above 0C in the valley (high of 9C).

The upper lifts at Happo One Lift Company and Tsuga Ike Lift Company are closed due to strong winds. This heavy loading due to precipitation and wind transportation will push the hazard level up. Hopefully this will trigger and sort out any lingering deeper instabilities in the upper elevation snow pack.

Minakami Now!

Weather conditions: Overcast and raining
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Overcast and raining at the village level this morning. Not the type of precipatation we were hoping for. It looks like the rain is here for most of the day but tomorrow it is forecast to turn into snow.

This is bad news for the lower ski areas, Oana and Norn, who will be likley to close until further snow falls are recieved.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 14th February 2007, 9:36am
Weather conditions: Grey sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
If you were planning on wearing flip-flops (thongs) this morning, then maybe it is not a good idea. It's been raining most of the night which has produced an unenviable amount of icy cold slush on the ground - it might get between your toes.

Although the horror of rain in mid February is upon us, it is pleasing to tell you that this rain is turning to snow. Our thoughts could even be with the half-pipe enthusiasts/entrants up there in the pipe today - in these wet snow conditions - there's an icy wind gust every other minute that kind of adds to the effect of wishing you were sitting in front of an open fire with a book and a cup of hot chocolate.

So it's zero degrees with a decent wind chill (that feels like -5), Naeba can not be seen due to a mixture of low cloud and white-out conditions.

Kagura is closed today due to the strong winds.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 14th February 2007, 10:04am
Weather conditions: Wind and rain.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A rainy windy, and warmish day here in Nozawa this morning. The Gondolas and top lifts are shut and probably won’t reopen today and possibly tomorrow due to the high winds. Lift passes are transferable. The temperatures in the village are between 0C and +4C so not a great day for maintaining the snow conditions. Tomorrow however at least 20cm will fall so any damage done today will be repaired.

The outlook is for high winds to continue through to Thursday night. All day Thursday and Friday light to moderate snow will fall. The winds on Friday will reduce to normal levels; 10-30km/h.

Yuzawa Now!

Wednesday 14th February 2007, 11:07am
Weather conditions: Cloud, rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Even at 9am this morning it was a very mild +7 degrees, and it is currently 10 degrees - likely to rise to maybe 12 this afternoon. There are also some strong howling winds this morning and unfortunately rain. Right now there is a break in the rain (and it is actually quite bright), but it was raining before and is forecast to be with us through until tonight.... we could do without that!

The strong winds are affecting resort operations - all of Kagura and GALA Yuzawa are closed today, with other lifts at other resorts also likely to be affected. So all in all, maybe not the best day to be out on the slopes!

Tomorrow afternoon and Friday we have the chance of snow to look forward to as the temperatures drop once more to winter-like levels.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Wednesday 14th February 2007, 11:43am
Weather conditions: Strong wind, snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Windy stormy like conditions this morning with some strong winds that are affecting resort operations in Shiga Kogen with many lifts not operating this morning - there are only a small selection of lifts moving at the moment, with resorts promising to open up more if the winds die down later on. It's not all that cold though, even with the winds, but as you might expect visibility is poor. Most people probably choosing the spend the day in the hot springs today...   Read more ...
