Yuzawa Now!

Friday 14th December 2007, 9:07am
Weather conditions: Cloud, rain/sleet (snow higher up)
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No snowfall at town level overnight, but we can see that the mountainsides have had a sprinkling of new snow. Right now though it is raining in Yuzawa, but it feels like it is trying to snow and we do actually have snow forecast for the day and so hopefully sooner rather than later it will turn into snowfall. At the moment it is around 4 degrees though, so rather mild and we need those temperatures to drop - again, this is forecast to be the case from later on today.

Higher up at Kagura and at Naeba it is snowing but there are some fairly strong winds which means that Kagura are not fully opening early on (up until No 1 high speed lift & Kagura No 1 romance lift at the moment). Temperature up at the main gelende is 0 degrees.

Gala Yuzawa has opened for the season this morning. Most of the runs in the central area are open (other than the chibbiko childrens area) and the Broadway and Swan courses in the Northern Area are open. Lifts open are:

Gondola (of course!)
Central area - 2 pairs and one quad
North area - 1 quad

This season the Southern Area of the Gala Yuzawa resort will once again be closed for the full season, due to them doing some checks and maintenance on that area.

Further report coming later on today...

PM update:

Well the rain continued this morning but gradually it has been changing into sleet and in the last few hours has seen it snowing in Yuzawa at town level. Still very wet snow, but snow all the same! The temperature has dropped to around +2 and it looks like we can expect snowfall overnight.

As mentioned this morning Gala Yuzawa is now open. Kandatsu were hoping to open, but there is not yet enough snow for that to happen and - like Iwappara - they will now open just as soon as they can.

The following resorts in Yuzawa were planning on opening for the season from tomorrow:

-Ludens Yuzawa
-Nakazato Snow Wood
-Tashiro (full opening)
-Yuzawa Kogen
-Yuzawa Park

At the moment we can only confirm Tashiro opening tomorrow. Unless there is a lot of snow tonight the other resorts seem unlikely, with Yuzawa Kogen being the most likely.

In neighbouring Minamiuonuma-shi, these resorts were planning to open tomorrow as well:

-Ishiuchi Maruyama
-Joetsu Kokusai
-Muikamachi Minami
-Muikamachi Hakkai-san

Again, these resorts will more than likely not be able to open and will all be on standby and open as soon as there is enough snow.

We will update you on the status of all these resorts tomorrow morning.    Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Friday 14th December 2007, 9:08am
Weather conditions: Cloudy Snowing through the day
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It was welcoming to wake to fresh snow on the trees and ground in the valley today.

The rain in the valley of yesterday turned to snow at just past midnight last night and will continue through the day today. Up on the slopes was a different story and the mixed rain and snow of the day turned to snow at 5pm yesterday evening and has produced a 20 cm snowfall over night. Today's powder up top will be a sweet surprise for the many who can get away early for the weekend.

This snow fall should continue through the weekend and in to next week so the chances of the resorts opening right to the bottom by next weekend are very high.

Winds are calm and visibility is poor up on the slopes but the new snow will make up for that. Remember that today is the last day for early season tickets.

Backcountry Travel Advisory:

Rain on the slopes to 2000 metres will have produced a warm layer beneath the new snow that should bond well as temperatures cool at tree line and below. Not so in the Alpine where rain did not fall and winds were high through the night. In the Alpine expect to see natural loose and slab avalanches through the day. If travelling in the backcountry be very cautious of triggering slab avalanches of 30 cms or greater. The new snow combined with the moderate to strong North west winds over night will have created cornices that will be very unstable and easy to fall with added human weight.

There's enough snow now to produce large scale avalanches big enough to bury a person. Travel with caution if going back-country/off-piste. Also watch for partially buried rocks/stumps etc. under shallow snow-pack and potential human triggered slides in wind deposited convex rolls and gullies. Be especially cautious with warming and rain today.

Tree line: Considerable

Naeba Now!

Friday 14th December 2007, 9:34am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's snowing this morning... hurrah!

The patches on the bottom of Naeba are in the process of being covered over and there's about 5cm of fresh snow until now and it is snowing now and forecast to for the rest of the day and into tomorrow. Hopefully with temperatures dropping later on today the snow might get heavier and there is a chance of other areas of the resort being able to open. All depends on the snow of course.

There are strong winds at Kagura this morning, so lift operations may be limited until that clears up. Remember that Tashiro is opening tomorrow, so from tomorrow the entire Kagura area (Tashiro-Kagura-Mitsumata) should be open.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Friday 14th December 2007, 9:39am
Weather conditions: overcast, snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Finally the snow is falling again and the pristine white stuff should be coming in all day today. The village is looking very nice and if it keeps coming at its current rate than we should expect htose off piste runs to return to what they were a week ago.

Visibility will most likely be pretty flat with the cloud cover and the temperature should be between -2/-10 on the mountain. The winds should be variable with the snow coming in from the north west over the peak hut.

It's time to get those tracks in now before the weekenders arrive and everything starts getting busier so it's a good thing we're getting more snow now to create a better base for all the coming people.

Minakami Now!

Friday 14th December 2007, 9:49am
Weather conditions: Dense cloud settled into the upper valleys (at about 850m)with heavy snow above and good but thawing snow below. Slightly humid in the valleys, hopvering about freezing up high.\r\n
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A warm morning with a combination of sleet and snow well down into the valleys. It is dumping solidly up high, but the warm air still coming up off the Kanto plain is making any snow below about 900m thaw.

Temperatures dropping up high, expected to get lower and lower over the coming weekend.

Changing wind direction should bring drier snow down into the valleys as the day goes on, with the best falls around mid-afternoon.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Friday 14th December 2007, 10:09am
Weather conditions: Snow in places, cloud, low visibility
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Light snow is falling in parts of Shiga Kogen this morning - though not actually here in Maruike right at this moment - and it is generally a cloudy/foggy morning with low visibility. Temperatures still just slightly below zero, but we can expect things to become more winterlike as the day progresses with snow forecast through until tomorrow and actually into next week as well. So people are highly expectant that by next week more of the area should be open and the season will really be able to get underway....   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Friday 14th December 2007, 10:59am
Weather conditions: overcast with some breaks
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Fresh snow overnight was a surprise as we woke to 20cm this morning. The temperatures are on the warmer ride, which means snow quality is a little low. The fresh snow is a little heavy compared to what we are use to, but still very good conditions.

Ski Races today in the Furano Zone have restricted the runs to half the width as the racers fly down the hill. The race training program here is of high standard and if you have time it is fun to watch the racers as they are all excellent skiers and go super fast.

A local restaurant in town is celebrating its 1 year anniversary at the moment so tonight and tomorrow night they are offering 100 Yen beers, and 20% off your total bill!

There are lots of end of year parties being held by local companies at the moment so the town is pumping more than usual in the evenings. Be prepared for drunk Japanese ramblings along the lines of "where you from?" "Do you like ski?".

The gondola in Kitanomine is scheduled to open tomorrow for the first day of the season! Excitement plus plus!   Read more ...

Friday 14th December 2007, 23:38pm
Weather conditions: snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snows have just started and the cold weather has come with it. -5C tonight on the slopes of Akakura. The rest of Akakura Onsen resort opened today with a nice cover of 10cm. Seki Onsen (powder heaven) didn't get as much comparatively, but has maintained its depth and gotten fluffier.

Tomorrow Suginohara opens! 8.5 kms of dry powder is all set for what appears to be a busy weekend according to most innkeepers.    Read more ...
