Hakuba Now!

Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A beautiful sunny day here in Hakuba, not a cloud in the sky! Perfect day to hit the slopes and practice some turns. It will be spring slush pretty much from now on, so you will need to wax those boards up. Snow is starting to be a bit lacking at the base these past few days so watch out for gaps of grass and/or dirt. You may encounter a bit of early morning icy conditions at higher elevations but that should soften up by noon. Bring sunscreen today for sure as the rays are notorious for burning faces as many of us found out this weekend.

Avalanche warning:

It is Spring conditions and the snow pack has warmed up significantly over the last 2 weeks causing large cracks to open and many areas to release to ground. This will persist until all snow either fails and falls or it melts and sends copious amounts of snow melt water to the valleys and rivers below. With water transport in and under the snow pack slopes of over 20 degrees have the ability to release. Be very cautious in deep valleys below large loaded and cracking slopes and around cornices, especially in periods of strong solar radiation or rain. It is at these times that water transport and snow temperature is increased and so also avalanche hazard.   Read more ...
