Lovely it was yesterday.
And today looks set to be similar - at least the first bit. It's going to warm up again and the sun is out from early on.
Warning! Good chance of rain later, which will hopefully be snow at higher elevations. After that brief (slightly) colder period, will be warmer again after and for the weekend clear and sunny skies are forecast. Other than the chance of some tonight higher up, there's not really any snow on the weeks forecast I'm afraid.

Clear, bit overcast
It's a much warmer start to the day here, already around +8 degrees. Fine weather though not as blue as yesterday a bit more overcast looking, but still clear skies and a feel good day. Bit of a wind early on, but hopefully won't cause the lifts and problems.
Good chance of rain later on I'm afraid.

Not the best of things to report this morning.
The resorts are calling it snow or sleet - and I have no reason to doubt them of course, and a look at the webcams shows it to be the case - but here at village level it has been raining. The temperatures is just nudging over into the positives and it feels rather mild.
Not enough wind today to cause the lifts any issues and so it looks like the resorts will all be open as planned this morning.
Official Resort Snow Depths
Grand Hirafu & Niseko Hanazono Top - 490cm Bottom - 240cm
Warm air flowing in with current low pressure system, visibility poor above 600m. Snow and westerly wind is expected to intensify as the day progresses. From data and observation the 9th Mar layer has stablised and avalanche risk in the morning is low. Below 500m, wet snow avalanches will easily trigger under lift lines and other steep slopes. 12th Mar layer will become significant in future snowpack.
Peak gates 2 & 3 and all other gates will be open as soon they can be prepared, but are dependent on weather. Please follow ski patrols instructions.
Over many years Niseko Rules and the gate system have been developed and allow anyone to enter side and backcountry. However please remember that once you pass through the gates you are not in the resort anymore and there are many dangers present. It is recommended you carry at least beacon, probe and shovel. Good morning from a very spring like and sunny Minakami.
It's around 6C in the town this morning and a high of above 15C forecast for this afternoon. Later on, light rain is expected in lower areas and hopefully it will be snow in higher areas.
From tonight will get colder again than it has been but probably warm up again by Friday. Read more ...
Nozawa Onsen Now!
Wednesday 13th March 2013, 10:00am
It's a relatively balmy overcast morning here in Nozawa Onsen with positive temperatures across the mountain. Slushy spring snow conditions will prevail with the best riding to be had on the upper slopes, especially this afternoon.... if the lifts are open (see below)
At the moment we have some heavy, high cirrus cloud passing over Nozawa accompanied by moderate winds. This is usually an indication of a impending front which is what we expect today. There may be some prefrontal rain this afternoon before a very cold North Westerly airstream establishes itself over Honshu some time tonight. Front this we expect a decent dump of fresh powder.
As I write this report it seems that the Nagasaka Gondola, Skyline connecting lift and Uenotaira quad are not operating due to some strong winds on the upper slopes.
Yesterday was an great day in terms of weather conditions. While the snow was of excellent quality and remained dry on the upper slopes, it was the awesome visibility and views that stole the show. Huge mountain peaks were clearly visible, many of them over 100km away! Even Sado Island, way out in the Sea of Japan was easily spotted. The morning remained totally cloudless and the crowds were very light indeed. Let's hope we have some more spring days like yesterday.
Looking at the forecast ahead we expect snow showers tomorrow from the aforementioned frontal system. From Friday to Sunday we expect clear weather, light winds and a stable freezing level of around 1000-1400 meters. Looks like a nice run of spring weather ahead.
Lifts operating: All except: Yunomine pair Mizunashi triple Challenge pair Hikage Number 2 pair B line
Courses open: All courses open except Grand Prix Kandahar East Kandahar West Challenge 39
Last night it didn't freeze in the village and temperatures remain warm with rain falling at base level of the resort. Temperatures are colder as elevation increases and there is likely to be snow rather than rain falling on anything except the lower slopes. Read more ...

Sunny, but increasing clouds
It's warm (and it was warm yesterday, too), and we're just waiting now for the rain to start falling. With the local weather reports giving an 80-90 percent chance, I think it's likely that things are going to be wet soon. With a strong west wind, we're also watching the snowpack get gobbled up. Spring is definitely here--for the moment. The freezing line continues its crazy up and down movement; it will be at about 3,000 meters midday, but will fall all the way to sea level by this evening, so we may be back to cold and snow after warm and rain.
In the backcountry, keep an eye on the cornices--they're starting to fall with the warm weather, and they're big. We saw some serious slides and debris inside the caldera around Mt. Myoko yesterday; you don't want to be under them when they happen to come down.
Operations and official snow depths (all from 3/11)
Yesterday was a fine one right through. This morning started off not quite as clear and has gradually got move overcast as the day has moved on. It's mostly grey skies now, mid afternoon.
Very warm though, over 15 degrees, but the lack of the sun is probably keeping the damaged limited. Unfortunately, rain is due later on, perhaps turning into snow overnight especially in higher areas. Tomorrow should be colder.
Wind too. GALA Yuzawa is closed for the day due to winds which seem to be getting stronger this afternoon.
After that clearing up for the weekend is what the latest forecast tells us.
Official resort snow depths @ Wednesday 13th March 2013, AM:
Sorry for the later report today, the new systems that will soon be taking over SnowJapan are to blame, as work needed to be done and I wasn't able to post earlier on! All good though.
OK today started off warm. It was around 5C at around 8am this morning. It started off bright but kind of hazy and the sun out at times with some blue patches of sky visible.
Since around lunchtime it has clouded over more, temperatures rose to over 15 degrees and it's now about 10C here at village base. There have been some strong winds which have affected a few higher lifts around the resorts as well.
Unfortunately, it's also raining.
Spring really has arrived in force this season, and we ask ourselves if we'll get a brilliant season bonanza like we did last year. Well, hopefully overnight we'll get some snow falling on upper areas of the resorts and temperatures will certainly drop tonight and into tomorrow. But there's not much in the weeks forecast to tell us to expect the arrival of new fluffy white stuff. More sun is likely Friday and Saturday.
Official snow depths and operations @ Wednesday 13th March 2013 AM:
Well, I said yesterday that we may have similar conditions today.
Much more overcast to start off with, and stronger winds that have affected some lifts around the resorts today. Rain overnight but hopefully it might cool down enough to bring a bit of snow instead - but for now it's pretty warm. Should be colder tonight and into tomorrow though, so fingers crossed.
Warmer clearer conditions on the forecast for the weekend.
