Minakami Now!

Sunday 13th January 2008, 7:15am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow continues to fall today in Minakami with 10cm accumulated at the valley level and up to 20cm above 1300m. Hoewever, the wind is currently very strong at the valley level which means that the upper mountains will be close to blizzard conditions at present. The wind is expected to get stringer towards midday and then ease off in the afternoon.

Tenjin may close today because of the wind but Houdaigi is expected to remain open and because of its relatively sheltered location, would be the pick of resorts in Minakami today.

The snow is forecast to keep falling to around midnight and take a short break before starting up again on Monday. There should be very little to no wind on Monday making for great on piste riding conditions.

Myoko Now!

Sunday 13th January 2008, 7:27am
Weather conditions: presently light snows
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Heaviest snowfall of the season last night. The inns and ryokans had their snowplows turning at 6a.m. due to the amount! It's quite cold as well, -7C at 7a.m. with only a degree or two rise during the day forecasted, so the powder is sweet. A good wee overall for Myoko.

Akakura Onsen would be today's pick. When deep powder levels like this come around, the Wall (Japan's steepest ski slope: 38 degrees) definitely rocks. But you're going to get fab skiing all around Myoko today.

Here are your Myoko area snow levels for this morning:

235cm (Akakura Kanko);
225cm (Akakura Onsen);
170cm (Ikenotaira);
285cm at the top, 135cm bottom (Suginohara);
200cm (Kumado Snowboard Park);
130cm (Pine Valley);
300cm (Seki Onsen);
125cm (Madarao Tangram Ski Circus);
115cm (Madarao Sympathique);
130cm (Madarao Kogen);
125cm (Cupid Valley);
185cm (Myoko Ski Park);
130cm (Togakushi);
150cm (Kurohime);
120cm (Iizuna);

Furano Now!

Weather conditions: ba beautiful bright sunny morning,with snow expected to start before lunchtime and heavy snow this afternoon.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Top day yesterday. If you didn't come off the mountain yesterday just STOKED with the day, then you weren't skiing the same mountain I was! Fantastic soft fluffy snow all day yesterday and excellent conditions.

This morning is much of the same. The skies are bright, with some cloud cover restricting the beautiful view of Tokachidake. It is a long weekend this weekend, so expect the mountain to be slightly busier, but still there is plenty out there for all.

A small amount of fresh snow overnight. 5cm in town will have the early morning groomers in tiptop conditions. Off-piste skiing is still excellent with deep cover on the ungroomed black runs. Yesterday Challenge was knee deep, a bit patchy underneath though which meant you had to watch your edges.

The Halfpipe is HUGE! A true superpipe to international FIS standards and a bunch of local riders are already training for the competition at the end of the month.

Again, Kuma is not open today in an aim to keep long-weekend traffic off the course.

Nearby resorts Tomamu and Kamui are getting regular snow. Tomamu is a bit later than normal this season, but have had some nice falls the last 2 days. They still need a bit more thought. Tomamu have put a lot of effort into their freestyle park this year, having built up a reputation as Hokkaido's premier Park. Kamui is just that (the gods!) (Kamui means "Gods" in the local Ainu dialect). The tree skiing out the back is finally getting better, with more snow expected the next few days.

Hakuba Now!

Sunday 13th January 2008, 9:07am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Last night we had a light snow fall and heavy winds resulting in a layer of maybe 20cms of new snow up top and 10cm or so in the valley.

Winds are quite strong today so the bottom lifts will be running on and off depending on conditions and the upper lifts will closed down if too strong.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Sunday 13th January 2008, 9:49am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Now this is a bit more like it! 20cm up at Kagura and maybe around 10cm of fresh snow on the ground in the town, it feels a bit more like winter this morning. (The official snow depth numbers might not reflect that). Since I started writing this report the snow had stopped for a short while and things seemed clearer, but it has come back and we snow is forecast for the rest of the day and the snow and cold temperatures should also be continuing through tomorrow as well.

Right now, it is -4 degrees and minus double figures at Kagura.

While the winds don't seem to have affected lift operations at Gala Yuzawa this morning (though lifts might move slowly at times), Kagura is not fully open with operations up there up until the Kagura Gondola and No 1 Romance lift. Tashiro is also closed today.

Conditions should have improved considerably today!   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Sunday 13th January 2008, 10:00am
Weather conditions: Heavy Clouds with snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There was not a lot of fresh snow yesterday. High winds hit the mountain around noon and closed all the top lifts. Even the Higashiama gondola was shut . The Ace thermometer read -14 at that time while the one at the bottom of King gondola read -5. It was an extremely cold day with the lower area of Hirafu crowded with skiers and boarders who had run out of options to find untracked.

Today is another extreme winter day in Hirafu. The local avalanche report says 30 centimeter has fallen at the base and temps will drop to -18. There is extreme avalanche danger as the wind has blown hard since yesterday. The high pressure that was over Niseko yesterday has moved north east and we are sitting over a low trough but it would appear that Mount Annapuri has it's own snow agenda as it defies the overall weather pattern.

At 10am this morning all lifts are operational except Hanazona 3. Some lifts are running slowly but there should be some great powder to be had all over the mountain. I will let you know tomorrow.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Sunday 13th January 2008, 10:01am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good news this morning. Winter temperatures are back with almost everywhere in minus double figures - Nishitateyama reporting a temperature of -13 degrees earlier on. About 15cm of fresh snow on car tops this morning.

Stronger winds are affecting some lift operations early, notably some of the lifts at Okushiga Kogen & Mammoth, but if and when the winds die down a bit they will try to open those up again. Other lifts might well be running slower than usual due to the weather conditions.

In the last hour or so it seems to be getting a bit brighter, but the snow is forecast for the day and we should be seeing the winter conditions continuing into the week.

Today is the second day of the three day weekend and a fair few people out on the slopes of Shiga Kogen. Still a lot of untouched powder out there though. Just remember to wrap up prepared for biting cold conditions.

Nighta for today is planned at the following resort areas:

- Sun Valley
- Maruike
- Mammoth
- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond
- Yakebitaiyama
- Kumanoyu   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Sunday 13th January 2008, 10:16am
Weather conditions: White-out
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Cold start to the day today, with a full 10-20m white-out. There's been about 30cm of snow overnight - maybe more but the wind has been transporting snow around since yesterday afternoon. No top lifts are open today - both gondolas at Naeba are closed including the Dragondola transport over to Tashiro. Also expect no opening of the top quad at Kagura today due to high wind. It's eight below in the village with a much cooler wind chill.

Looks like tomorrow morning will be the taking of the fresh snow up at the top of the hills.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Sunday 13th January 2008, 19:23pm
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The second day of the three day weekend and it was a wintery one. 15cm of fresh snow up top on Yamabiko with the rest of the mountain recording 10cm - and more has fallen during the day today.

It has been a cold day with temperatures as cold as -7 higher up on the mountain and some fairly strong winds at times, but for those going up there some great snow conditions to play in.

Tomorrow is also a national holiday here in Japan and so will be busier than a normal Monday. It looks like the snow will continue through tonight and into tomorrow with more snowfall and cold temperatures throughout the day. At the moment it is looking like things might clear up a bit for Tuesday.   Read more ...
