Minakami Now!

Saturday 13th January 2007, 7:34am
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow has started lightly falling from around 6:30 this morning and looks like it will be here for the day and continue to tomorrow morning. There is a very light breeze from the North that may become gusty at higher altitudes. The visibility is still not bad but may worsen with during the day with stronger snow forecast around midday.

After yesterdays warm temperatures and a cold night last night a sun crust has formed on the surface on faces that were exposed to the sun. So off piste is likely to be dust on crust today on Southern faces but Northern faces should be now nicely compacted powder.

There were a few small loose snow avalanches yesterday on the suface 15 cm on steeper slopes, so with the new snow today caution is advised.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Saturday 13th January 2007, 8:31am
Weather conditions: Overcast and still.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Overnight there has been a light dusting of about 5 cms and it continues to fall lightly now, and throughout the day.

The conditions on the hill are great, and fulfils everyone's expectations on what Niseko has to offer, especially for those who rode here last year.

From all accounts Strawberry Fields and Blueberry's are the pick first thing in the morning, over at Hanazono, whilst a quick venture off-piste will also reward you with some deep dry powder.

Long term it's going to stay cold with regular flurries of snow until the end of next week, where temperatures will get closer to zero but some heavy snow is predicted.

---

Update:

Today's been one of those days that keeps everyone happy. There were brief glimpses of Youtei San, patches of blue sky and also some light snow falling fairly consistently throughout the day. Since this morning there has been a couple of cms of really light dry snow. We can expect a few more cms overnight and slightly heavier falls throughout tomorrow.    Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Saturday 13th January 2007, 8:38am
Weather conditions: Snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A snowy morning today in Nozawa. It has been lightly dusting since around 1am so up on the mountain will be fresh and soft if not that deep. The weather yesterday was not what was expected: a fine and sunny day with little or no breeze. So those on the mountain were spoilt with great views and a little extra warmth all day. Today however will be different with the temperatures around –9 to –10C on the mountain now and the visibility poor. The wind should be around 10 to 20km/h.

The forecast for the next few days is for light snow to continue all day today and tomorrow. Monday will be cloudy but snow is not likely.

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 13th January 2007, 9:13am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow is back with popular demand. 5cm up top over night and has picked up in snow rate this morning to 3 cm per hour (S 3). Winds are light from the North and skies are overcast and snowing. Should be good powder building through the day for fresh tracks tomorrow.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m) the 0730 hr. reading is:
Sky: Overcast
Temperature: Present: -4.0 C
Maximum: 0 C
Minimum: -6 C
Wind: Light Northerly
Precipitation: S -1
Barometer and trend: falling
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 3 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS):82 cm
Foot penetration: 25 cm

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Hazard:
Above Tree Line: Considerable

At Tree Line: Moderate

Below Tree Line: Moderate

Travel Advisory:
New snow will put a layer of easy to sluf snow on the surface and with continued snows but weight on the lower layers. Slabs are deep, increasing in density and may stilll propagate wide in large Alpine terrain. Forested areas and chutes BTL may also still produce skier triggered slabs on steep tensioned and cross loaded slopes.
If you do travel outside of the controlled area be aware of the potential of "remote triggering" of avalanches and that the hazard is still "Considerable" above tree line and that a naturally triggered avalanche starting above tree line can easily come to rest well below tree line.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is snowing this morning and we have probably had up to 5cm or so down at town level since last night and hopefully more coming during today as we have snow forecast for right through into early tomorrow morning. After that it looks like it will be cloud with snow falling on and off with Monday looking to be a fine day.

There is not much of a wind this morning and it probably will not rise above 0 both today and tomorrow.    Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Saturday 13th January 2007, 9:50am
Weather conditions: grey sky filled with snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The temperature is -4 in the village this morning, with a grey sky. There's 3cm underfoot, it looks like last night's predicted snowfall is hitting us now. So here's for a good sunday morning session in the snow. There's also quite a brisk wind - so expect a late kagura top quad opening today.

Well now that's that out of the way, here's some reporting on yesterdays conditions...

Scenario:

Naeba's top 2 man lift open, lots of sturdy powder with gully's that provide some excellent cross gully launch zones, that is to say the kind that provide steep launch offs on to powder pumped convex hills followed by steep drops into powder straights...

Fantastic.

Naeba has some excellent terrain.

Get out there before it all fills in with snow.

Furano Now!

Saturday 13th January 2007, 13:49pm
Weather conditions: Light snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We have had another 10cm of dry, powder snow here in town over the last 24 hours. I haven't been on the mountain yet today but should be around 20cm of fresh on the higher sections.

'Kumatoshi' - one of the black, ungroomed slopes has opened today for the first time this season and should have some amazing powder available, unfortunately I am to busy to get up there today but will check it out tomorrow.
