Zao Now!

Sunday 13th April 2014, 9:41am
Weather conditions: Sunny
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 180cm
Lovely blue skies over Zao this weekend along with mild conditions.

Perfect spring ski/board weather.

The same is forecast right up until Thursday with things getting slightly warmer as well towards the end of the week.

It's not exactly very close to Zao Onsen - actually an 80km or so drive from Zao - but I'm sure some people reading this will be interested.... Gassan opened yesterday. Gassan is to the north west of Zao, still in Yamagata Prefecture, and famous for only opening at this time of the year and offering snow skiing up until (usually) the end of July. It's certainly an interesting way to escape the heat of early summer.

Operating ski lifts at Zao (* subject to change):

Sometime in April, depending on snow conditions:
Yokokura Number 1 Pair
Kurohime Number 1 Quad

Until 6th May:
Ropeways and Gondolas (open through the year)
Chuo Number 1 Pair
Utopia Number 2 Pair
Chuo Number 2 Pair (every day until 13th April, then holidays)
Katakai Triple (every day until 13th April, then holidays)
Paradise Pair (every day until 13th April, then holidays)

Official snow depths (13th April 14):
Utopia: 200cm
Chuo: 180cm
Paradise: 190cm
Uwanodai: 65cm

Yuzawa Now!

Sunday 13th April 2014, 10:01am
Weather conditions: Clear, sunny
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 0cm
Lots of sun again yesterday and some fine spring conditions to be enjoyed. Some people out in t-shirts, others still in full winter gear. I chose somewhere in the middle as it was still fairly chilly higher up.

Today is the last day of the season for Maiko Snow Resort and I have been hearing reports that conditions were good over there yesterday, still with almost complete snow cover on the runs. Good to hear, shame it has to end...

Naeba will be closed again from tomorrow leaving us with just GALA Yuzawa and Kagura open for the weekdays.

Basically sunny clear conditions for the upcoming week along with warm spring temperatures.

Current planned resort operations:

Last day of the season today:
Maiko Snow Resort

Weekends only; then 26th-29th April and 3rd-6th May:

Daily until 6th May:
GALA Yuzawa (Central and North Areas)
Kagura (Tashiro area)

Daily until 25th May:
Kagura (Mitsumata and main Kagura area)

All other resorts in the region are now closed for the season.
