Minakami Now!

Friday 12th January 2007, 7:56am
Weather conditions: Clear sky with some high cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday tyhe snow continued to come down very lightly during the day bringing another 5cm to the village and over 10cm to the upper mountains. The wind was gutsy higher in the mountains yesterday but looks like it has all but dissapeared this morning with a beautiful blue sky with a faint hint of some high cirrus clouds.

It looks like it will slowly cloud over today and it is forecats for more snow from late tonight to midday tomorrow. So the snow conditions for the weekend should be great.

All fields in Minakami are now fully open and have a good snow covering (except for Norn)with some of the trees now opening up for powder runs. In the backcountry the creeks are finally getting a good covering at higher altitudes, and many of the smaller trees are disappearing under the snow. There is still some instability because of the high winds of recently, so riding onlarge exposed slopes is not adviseable. The trees have deeper snow at the moment, which makes for less avalanche danger and better riding. (good idea to wear a helmet!)   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Friday 12th January 2007, 8:28am
Weather conditions: light snowfall.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Overnight snow was held to about 10cm, but it did snow for most of yesterday and was filling in tracks made in the morning.

A big call to make, but yesterday would have to be the "Day of the Season" to date, and would only really have been topped by a clear blue sky day. Knee to waist deep powder was the norm and there were fresh tracks a-plenty, great Niseko conditions.

Flutters of snow will continue to fall, whilst the cloud cover will continue to remain over head. The sun may try to make an appearance, but only for short bursts.

Today the conditions will still be great, particularly at the top of Hanazono, as the #3 chair-lift was closed yesterday.

Face-shots and deep turns will be the order for the day.

Update:

Just an extra note this morning to clarify any confusion that there might have been regarding information posted about gondola operations recently.

The "Higashiyama Gondola" is one of two gondolas located at Higashiyama. The main access gondola is called the "Prince Gondola" and this lift has been running smoothly (with exceptions due to weather) for the duration of the season, whilst the "Higashiyama Gondola" is the lift that has been suspended due to it's age and maintenance.

We hope this makes the gondola operation situation clear and apologise if there was any confusion on this issue. Thanks!

Yuzawa Now!

Friday 12th January 2007, 8:33am
Weather conditions: Cloud, some blue sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There has been another sprinkling of snow overnight, with a few cm of snow here and there in the town and the trees are looking frosted over. It's a chilly morning and temperatures probably won't rise that much above 0C during the day. At the moment it is quite bright and there are patches of blue sky so it looks like it will be a fine to be out on the snow.

Snow clouds are forecast to be back with us later tonight and for snow to be falling overnight and into tomorrow afternoon.

We will post another report this evening with the latest for the weekend.

---

Update:

It ended up being a fine day with the sun out for a fair time this afternoon and it felt milder than the +1 that it rose to this afternoon.

Well, it is looking like it will be snowing from later on tonight and also through the day tomorrow, so wrap up well if you are on your way to Yuzawa. 10-20cm of fresh snow is forecast to fall in Yuzawa from now until 9am tomorrow morning, so if that turns out to happen it will be a welcome topup for the slopes just in time for some weekend riding... that's what we want!

It probably won't rise above 0 degrees all day.

Have a great weekend wherever you plan to be.    Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Friday 12th January 2007, 8:56am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There was a sprinkling of fresh snow overnight. This morning there is some blue sky on show amongst the clouds in the region and it is looking like it might clear up into a fine day. It is also another very cold one with the thermometer outside my building here currently on -9.

Some favourable reports coming back from the slopes yesterday. Especially on weekdays, the area is not busy - apart from a few central areas, no waiting time at all for lifts - and with good snow conditions the two extreme regions of the resort (Okushiga/Yakebitaiyama and Kumanoyu/Yokoteyama) are looking good.

It is looking likely that we may have more snow late tonight and into the weekend as well.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Friday 12th January 2007, 9:12am
Weather conditions: blue sky with light high cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A very frosty -10 in the village this morning, blue sky with high wispy clouds - naeba is fully visible. Not much to report on on the snow front.. about 5 cm since yesterdays report.

Last nights snowballs where not having it - That is to say they were crumbling before they even left the hand... so it's been a cold fluttering of snow in the last 24.

Ventured up to the top of Naeba yesterday, couldn't see a thing up top, but it was surprising how much more snow had fallen up there compared to the village level - Just goes to show that if I'm reporting 20cm down here at Asagai, it's a likely 30cm+ up there! - Lot's of powder up there yesterday - and there'll sure to be more today. After descending to the bottom of the green snake run which meets at the top of the gun barrel ( or 'challengy' as it is known), the visibility cleared up and then it was all about the gun barrel run - stacked with snow - all up the sides and everywhere - some good jumps and little hits to ride over if your up for that kind of thing.... In general the terrain is very different from most years due to the low snow base - Although this is making off gelande runs a little saucy with the trees and undergrowth, it certainly makes it more interesting with all the little divots and small launch-off lips - nothing is filled in with stacks of powder you see.

So you see, whilst it may have been a poor start to the season, it has opened up a completely different experience in the riding up here this season... The terrain is different, very different. More exciting and gnarly I'd say!

It's Friday!!!! Think we're going to Kampai the winter sports tonight! - especially skiing and snowboarding!!

8-)

Furano Now!

Friday 12th January 2007, 9:27am
Weather conditions: Light snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was another awesome day on the mountain with lots of fresh snow from the night before and some heavy snow fall at times during the day. We have received around 10cm of snow in town over the last 24hours, double that on the mountain. The temperature has been good and cold as well, -10 this morning at the base of the mountain.

This morning there is light but constant snowfall and no wind here in town. We were gutting the occasional strong gusts on the higher sections of the mountain yesterday that were blowing snow off the trees and creating really bad visibility at times so be sure to slow down and take care if you feel the wind picking up.

The snow is predicted to slow down for the next 2 days and then become heavy again for the start of next week. The temps should remain low throughout the week so snow quality should be light and powdery.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Friday 12th January 2007, 10:38am
Weather conditions: High clouds, light snow set to continue.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A beautiful sharp and clear morning in Nozawa today. There is high cloud but the visibility on the mountain is fantastic. There are excellent views across the valley to Togari and other resorts, but that is set to change as snow is still predicted. The temperatures are quite cold with Yambiko at –9C and Uenotaira at –10C. Light snow fell last night on the mountain but Uenotaira and Yamabiko have unchanged base depths of 130cm and 160cm.

The forecast is for light snow to continue through the weekend with the possibility of light showers in the village on Sunday afternoon. Winds should be no stronger than 25km/h

Hakuba Now!

Friday 12th January 2007, 10:48am
Weather conditions: Scatered cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Scatered cloud and blue skies have set the scene for another great day in Hakuba. There has been continual light snow fall for th past 3 days and it has been putting a pleasent cover over the resorts each day keeping conditions soft and fast. The runs on Happo, Goryu and 47 are groomed to perfection and are vertually empty of people and visibility is excellent making today a great day for some fast carving. Temperatures were slightly colder first thing this morning but it seems to be warming up as the day goes on and wind is calm meening trips up to the top of the resorts will be bearable for even the most unseasoned of winter recreationalists.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m) the 0730 hr. reading is:
Sky: Overcast
Temperature: Present: -6.0 C
Maximum: -2 C
Minimum: -6 C
Wind: calm
Precipitation: S -1
Barometer and trend: rising
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 4 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS):83 cm
Foot penetration: 25 cm

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Hazard:
Above Tree Line: Considerable

At Tree Line: Moderate

Below Tree Line: Moderate

Discussion:
With the winds calming and temperatures staying steady the snow pack overall is stabalizing. With this bonding there will also be a denser surface slab being created that is 1 metre thick or greater in areas. This slab will be much thiner around ridges and rock outcropings and easier to trigger from these areas. Alpine areas are still rated as HIGH HAZARD because of the reacent high winds, large loading and persistant cold temperatures up high. Suspected -15 or colder in the alpine overnight last night. There is a thin surface hoar (frost) that formed last night all over the mountains that is slowly being burried now with the present snow fall.

Travel Advisory:
Slopes Below Tree Line (BTL) and at Tree Line (TL) are continuing to stabilize but Alpine (Alp) snow packs are slower to stabilize and Back country users should be increasingly cautious if traveling in Alpine avalanche terrain. Steep lee slopes should be avoided all together. Slabs are deep, increasing in density and will propagate wide in large Alpine terrain. Forested areas and chutes BTL may also still produce skier triggered slabs on steep tensioned and cross loaded slopes. One size 3 SE aspect observed on kairazu, multiple size 2's in the Alpine all aspects off of Happo One. Back Country users should use general caution taking care not to travel in across or below suspect tensioned slopes and in areas of promanant terrain traps.
If you do travel outside of the controlled area be aware of the potential of "remote triggering" of avalanches and that the hazard is still "Considerable" above tree line and that a naturally triggered avalanche starting above tree line can easily come to rest well below tree line.

Minakami Now!

Friday 12th January 2007, 17:23pm
Weather conditions: Clear sky with some high cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Quick update for people coming up this weekend.

Tenjindaira is opening (finally) the return course to the bottom of the gondola from tomorrow. This means that a lot of the backcountry will be accessable.

It is probably best to keep out of avalanche alley, even though a big avalanche has just dropped the creek at the bottom is not fully covered.    Read more ...
