Nozawa Onsen Now!
Wednesday 12th February 2020, 6:47am
Good morning from Nozawa.
Very early this morning as I am on my way out of the village for the day.
After the snow yesterday, which eased off by afternoon, and no cm being reported, this morning we are starting with some lovely early morning shades (see the images below) and it is going to be a fine day.
It is cold early on but it will be warming up more than we would like it to - perhaps up to around 7C early afternoon. Sunshine and clear skies are expected for the day. Tomorrow and Friday are going to be a bit warmer still, and there's also a chance of rain at times. (Hmmmmm. Please don't get too warm. And please don't rain...)
Happily we should be back to snow and colder conditions once more come Monday.
Have a fun day if you are able to get out there.
Looks like the Kamoshika course is closed/not fully open due to avalanche risk.

Fresh snowfall recorded by resort since yesterday morning:
All courses normally open apart from the following courses:
- Kandahar - Mukobayashi - Hachiman - Kamoshika (limited due to avalanche risk) Read more ...

It is a mild start to the day and it looks like we are in for a short burst of very warm weather. The high today will rocket up to +3c and the warm temperatures will persist for the next three days until it gets colder on Saturday. Conditions are high cloud with little wind and good visibility.
Just a reminder that the resort plans to shut down operation of the Kitanomine quad lift for one day on Thursday 13th Feb for maintenance.
Some light snow in the afternoon yesterday but it stopped last night and this morning the sun is out again this morning. Some cloud around but blue sky too. Nice morning.
After a busy holiday yesterday it is back to weekdays now and while we don't have a fresh layer to play in I think it should be a good morning. A bit windy at times, but that shouldn't spoil the fun.

Clear and sunny
Morning from Yuzawa.
And... it's a beauty.
It was snowing during the morning yesterday, though I don't have any new cm to report to you (there was surely a bit on the slopes).
This morning we have almost totally clear blue skies. There are just a few white small clouds in places; the mountains are looking magnificent.
It is cold too at the start of the morning, but it is going to be warming up and a very mild afternoon today - temperatures might be approaching 10C today in town, and will break through that tomorrow. That's much warmer than we'd like it to be, of course, and disappointing after we got our fresh snow on the ground. Let's hope that the forecasts are just a bit too pessimistic. The warmer spell is probably going to last through into the weekend and there is a chance of some rain showers in there too at times.
Happily, the forecasts show snow and cold once again from Monday.
Anyway, it should be a beautiful morning to be out on the slopes.

Lots of snow the night before last and strong winds all day yesterday at higher elevations meant only the middle lift was open at Tenjin. Hodaigi was really good apparently. The weather cleared from 3pm, cold night last night but forecast is for things to warm during the day. The backcountry will be closed all day at Tenjin today with a policeman manning the gate due to official activities in the backcountry.
The weather looks to be turning on us here with light rain this evening and freezing levels to stay around 2000m until Sunday night when the next snow is expected.
Monday looking like a big snowfall, though that's translated to about 40cm on my car park this Winter instead of double that or more on a normal season. Remember this is close to Tenjin base.
Good to see most of Okutone now open...
Snowfall recorded in this report is from yesterday; none overnight last night.
Akasawa Normally part open Note: closed on Tuesdays (apart from 11th February, when it will be closed on 12th February)
Fujiwara All lifts running; all courses open Official snow depth: 80cm
A sunny and actually pretty cold start to the morning; lots of sparkly surface hoar on the snow.
There's a little bit of a crust on places where the sun hit yesterday.
Otherwise, it's a nice day, and perhaps the last nice day for a while here. I hate to be the bringing of bad news, so look at the weather pages in here and see how ridiculous the freezing line will be...
It's a cold morning and an early start should be good.
After all that lovely fresh snow, the forecasts are looking a bit... too warm. It will mild-up later on today and from tomorrow for a least a few days there's some warm conditions that we're going to have to ride through. (We might get rained on a bit as well at times).
We can expect a return to snow clouds early week.
Current operations: Wednesday 12th February 2020
- All lifts should be operating - All areas open - All tree run course open apart from Powder Wave - Official snow depth: 240cm

Good morning from Niseko.
Enjoyed some blue sky and sunshine yesterday but this morning it is much more of a murky grey look early on this morning. Cloudy and fog being reported on upper areas. Having said that, I can see a few small patches of blue sky...
The next few days the country is expecting some milder/warmer conditions and it is noticeably not as cold this morning.
The top lifts at Niseko Grand Hirafu, Niseko Village and Niseko Annupuri are all on hold at the time of this report going up due to windy conditions up there.
Next decent fresh layer of snow? Maybe from later on Sunday and Monday.
Someone asked about the comments in the Avalanche Report yesterday. And... honestly, I really don't know. I generally try to keep well out of 'politics' (both locally and beyond that), so I'm sorry but I can't elaborate on it.
A strong wind is blowing in northern Sea of Japan as the next low-pressure system is approaching. Strong southerly wind is generating thick fog in south facing slopes above 700m. Surface slabs are forming in south facing slopes above 800m due to the wind and rising temperature. 40cm thick surface slab avalanches are expected to slide from Feb 8th layer. The weather will deteriorate later in the day. Beware. Steep 40°slopes in gullies could slide anytime. Better avoid open terrains today.
Do not step into strictly off-limits areas to seek fresh snow. The gates opening is undecided today. The Niseko Rules are the official rules for this area, they’re not a law. However, resort management has no authority to neglect these rules. Authoritarian behavior will only upset the guests and may lead the Rules to fall apart.

Sunny blue skies
Check out the images below. Photos can't do it justice but you'll get an idea of how amazing the Hakuba mountains are looking this morning.
No fresh snow is being reported since yesterday, but it is a cold start to the day and it should be a great morning. Might be some icy conditions early on.
The information in this table is data reported by the ski resorts
New snowfall (lower)
New snowfall (upper)
TOTAL ACCUMULATION (UPPER)
IMPORTANT: See below for an explanation of the above data
It is however due to warm up and through until around Sunday some rather mild/warm conditions are on the forecasts as well as occasional rain. That will be disappointing after the snowfalls of the last week.
All the more reason to get out and enjoy the conditions this morning.
The good news is that from Monday temperatures should be diving back down and snow is forecast again.

About the data in the above ‘snowfall as reported by ski resorts’ table * The table within the above report contains data that is published by individual ski resorts * The data shown is the amount of snowfall that the ski resorts are themselves reporting each 24 hour period on the upper areas of their mountain * The source ‘new snowfall’ data and ‘total accumulation’ data is not updated at the same time * The ‘new snowfall’ data is updated in the morning * The ‘accumulation’ data is apparently updated/refreshed at midnight * That means that there is a time lag between the two numbers being updated * We manually check and update the data just before we publish each Hakuba Now report - so the data in each Hakuba Now report table is what is available at that time * Any odd-looking numbers are due to the source data. We are not responsible for and have no control over the data. We are simply sharing the data with you * Just to be extra clear, unlike our own ‘observed snowfall’ data from base that we show at the top of each report, the data in the table is not an independent observation by SnowJapan * A more in-depth introduction and explanation can be found in this reportRead more ...

The sun is out, there's lots of blue sky, some white clouds.
It's good and cold early on too. Real feel-good.
We are all expecting a mild day as the sun gets to work and the warmer conditions are due to continue for at least a few days.
Colder temps and hopefully some fresh snow will be back from Monday. Just hope there's not too much damage done by warmth and possible rain in the meantime...

Clear blue skies and sunshine
It is a very cold start to the day with icy roads to navigate.
The sun is out and we have beautiful blue skies all around.
Should be a very good morning after that fresh snow into yesterday.
And it feels like it is going to warm up... the forecasts tell us it will. Not too much please.....
Nekoma is closed again today after the special open for the national holiday yesterday.
Grandeco Snow Resort: - 4 (of 5) lifts operating - 11 (of 13) courses open - Normal weekday operations - Official snow depth: 170cm
The sun is out this morning and there's mostly blue skies over the region.
It should be a very good morning.
Cold early on but temperatures are on the way up starting today. The next few days are going to see some warm temps recorded. Lower down in the valleys it might hit 10C. Up here in Shiga Kogen hopefully it won't get more than 5C, but that is unseasonably warm. Obviously we don't want the recent snow to be subjected to warmth.
Fingers crossed everyone.
All areas and connections at Shiga Kogen are now open (with just a few minor exceptions).
