Appi Kogen Now!

Sunday 12th February 2017, 7:54am
Weather conditions: Snow clouds
New snowfall: 10cm
Snow depth: --
Appi Sunday,

Cloudy skies this morning with some very light snow falling and a temperature of -3 outside. We can expect much the same throughout the day with the winds dying down somewhat in the late afternoon.

We can expect around 10cm throughout the day falling fairly steadily. Tomorrows forecast may bring us lighter winds, stable temperatures in the -5 range with some very light snow fall, maybe 3cm max. It was a very busy day here yesterday and we’re expecting the same today so if you’re searching for some fresh groomed runs you better head out there early or be waiting for the 9am second area to open.

Enjoy your Sunday.

Niseko Now!

Sunday 12th February 2017, 8:30am
Weather conditions: Cloudy skies
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning.

The snow we were hoping for yesterday didn't happen and it's a dusting of snowfall really this morning here at base.

It doesn't feel too cold outside and indeed my thermometer is saying -1C at the moment. There's some winds about though and they are affecting top lifts at the start of the day (see below for 8:30am latest on that score).

Also be sure to read the Avalanche Report below too.

There's not much more to report this morning really. I'll let you take a look at the forecast... snow please!

The challenge of the day is to hunt out the best snow conditions out there. Gambaro!

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Mountain base 6.00am: -3°, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: -7°, N8m/s, trace new snow, minor snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m, -7°, NNW15m/s, no new snow, drifting snow. Hirafu 1250m, -8°, N10m/s, no new snow, drifting snow. Coastal data: Kamui Cape:NNe3m/s, 1008hPa, wave 3.1m.

Although only light snowfall, due to strong northerly wind at higher elevations, drifting snow has caused cornice development overnight. This new cornice growth is unstable and will easily collapse. From observation, general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open. Please listen to and follow patrols advice.

The safety of out of bounds riders is the No 1 important factor in the daily decisions as to whether gates are open or closed. If the gates are closed you should not ride out of bounds. In Niseko ducking ropes to ride out of bounds will not be ignored.

There have been an increasing number of accidents on the mountains around Niseko. Everyone is free to enter the mountains but the you must carry the responsibility of your own safety, especially guides and tour leaders. In the past many accidents have occurred due to irresponsible decisions by guides and leaders. Don't overestimate your knowledge or experience. Always err on the side of safety. Be careful of sudden weather change, waves are increasing at the coast. Take care.

Yuzawa Now!

Sunday 12th February 2017, 8:33am
Weather conditions: Snow clouds
New snowfall: 37cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning from a snowy Yuzawa.

After another day of mixed and sometimes confusing weather conditions that made the local weather forecasts look like pure guesswork, this morning there is a very nice new layer of fresh snow to report after the snow kicked in properly overnight.

We are measuring 37cm of fresh snowfall here in Yuzawa, 34cm to the north in Shiozawa and here is what the resorts are reporting:

Kagura: 40cm
Kagura (Tashiro): 25cm
Maiko Snow Resort: 30-40cm

So wherever you are in the region this morning, you should be greeted by lots of fresh snow.

It's still snowing and visibility generally limited to poor out there.

The local forecasts says snow for the day today and into tomorrow (though they haven't been right over the last few days). The snow seems set in for the moment though so I would expect more cm through the day today at least.

All resorts look like they should be open as normal today.

Enjoy!

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Sunday 12th February 2017, 8:44am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: 31cm
Snow depth: --
Hello and good morning from Nozawa.

Ah yes, there has been a very nice delivery of snow since my report yesterday.

A good 30cm of fresh snow, and I noticed that the official snow depth up on Yamabiko is now closing in on 4m. All good!

Limited visibility this morning as the snow continues to fall so extra care needed but some very find conditions to enjoy.

The snow clouds should be with us into tomorrow as well but less snow expected and clearer skies likely beyond that into the week.

Hakuba Now!

Sunday 12th February 2017, 8:51am
Weather conditions: Snow clouds
New snowfall: 22cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Hakuba.

And it's another very good one too!

After a day of snow and wind yesterday, there's some nice fresh snowfall headlines this morning:

Our measurement: 22cm

...and from around the resorts...

Hakuba Cortina: 25cm
Hakuba 47: 20-25cm
Hakuba Happo-one: 20cm
Hakuba Goryu: 10-20cm

So with the snow yesterday and overnight we can probably expect a decent (pre-groomed!) 20cm and more of fresh snow on the slopes wherever you choose to be skiing or boarding this morning.

Can't complain at that!

The snow has stopped here were I am for now though it is still snowing on the mountain - with more expected for the day perhaps easing off by tomorrow. Having said that, there was some blue sky appearing and a bit of sunshine just before, so who knows. Wind doesn't look like it is an issue today.

Wrap up well, get those goggles on (visibility still generally limited on mountain), remember to take care and enjoy the conditions today.

Grandeco Now!

Sunday 12th February 2017, 9:02am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: 36cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Grandeco.

And an excellent morning it is too --- 36cm of fresh snowfall!

It was snowing heavily yesterday and affected transportation - though trains and highways are okay at the moment and while it is snowing still it is not as heavily as yesterday.

Temperatures are keeping quite low and the snow condition is nice powder.

Due to so much powder snow falling in a short period of time yesterday, the hike up to Mt. Nishidaiten will be a little hard today even if you wear snowshoes.

Any of the courses today should be a lot of fun. Hope you can enjoy it.

Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: 32cm

A very good morning to you.

How does another 30cm of fresh snow sound?

It's cold out there and visibility is limited but it should be worth getting out there with lots of excellent fresh snow to play in.

Once we get into tomorrow, forecast seem to point towards a good chance of generally clearer skies and hopefully temperatures remaining cold enough to keep the snow in good condition.

It should be a very good week to be here.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Sunday 12th February 2017, 9:09am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: 43cm
Snow depth: --
Hello from Shiga Kogen.

It's still snowing.

And we've had loads since my report yesterday as well.

43cm is my measurement.

:)

Lovely light snow too.

So it is still snowing now and still snowing quite heavily for the moment.

Probably going to ease off later today and tomorrow, when we might even get to see some clearer skies. And it does look like the coming week may bring us more of those clearer skies than the snowy conditions. But with all the quality snow we have right now, that is not a problem. In fact, I think lots of us are looking forward to it.

We are expecting calmer and clearer conditions later in the day and tomorrow too. Perhaps even some sunshine. Not a whole lot of snow on the forecast for the week, perhaps just a bit at times but it should be keeping suitable cold.

Weather conditions: Heavy snow and overcast
New snowfall: 50cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Naeba everybody.

First off apologies for the lack of report yesterday.

For today we are reporting 50 cm of new snow however that is 20 cm for the 11th of February and 30 cm for today 12th February.

Today looks like it is going to be pretty special. With plenty of snow overnight and heavy snow falling even now conditions are fresh and powdery everywhere!

Looking on we are expecting this current snowstorm to carry on until Wednesday with clear weather on Thursday. After we have rain in the forecast, however, this is still a way off so let's hope the forecast changes before we get there.

Weather conditions: Sun shining at moments
New snowfall: 47cm
Snow depth: --
We got a pretty good dumping from yesterday through the night and into the morning. The prediction was for 60; I think we got close to that, but not quite. But there still is a lot of great new snow out there, and it is still falling, although very lightly at the moment.

It was pretty wild at the end of the day, with some screaming wind coming down off the mountain at the very end of the day, then some lightning late in the evening.

Can't tell what it's doing at the moment; I think we might be seeing a little rest before the snow picks up again. Snow is on the forecast for the next few days; the Niigata prefecture site says 10cm during the day today.

Maybe people were busy this morning; there are a few resorts that have not yet updated their daily reports.
