Nozawa Onsen Now!

Sunday 12th December 2010, 8:38am
Weather conditions: Sunny Blue Skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort will be open today.

After a false start yesterday the resort has confirmed that the Nagasaka Gondola will be rolling today.

With clear skies and possibly a light dusting up top over night should make for a fun first day of the year.

Skiing will be mainly in the top Yamabiko area but the Uenodaira 4 lift is also open so a nice long beginners course is available for those wanting to find their legs for the start of the season.

A few guys made their own way up the top yesterday for a few turns and from all reports the snow quality was good.

A bit more would be most welcome though and forecasts are showing fairly consistent falls for next week.

Courses open:

Yamabiko courses A
Yamabiko course C
Yamabiko course D
Yamabiko course E
Uenodaira course

Lifts operating:

Nagasaka Gondola (both sections)
The two Yamabiko quad lifts
Uenodaira quad lift   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Sunday 12th December 2010, 9:15am
Weather conditions: Clouds up on higher peaks, blue sky to the NE
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Sunny weather and blue skies to the North East today in Hakuba, although the upper peaks are shrouded in clouds this morning. Again it looks like it is going be a warm day in the valley and unfortunately that means more snow melting at the bottom of the resorts. If the temperatures stay cold during the day the base we have should remain alright. With skiers and boarders hitting the slopes over the weekend, the runs will get packed down naturally and the base should harden up nicely.

The resorts that are open today only have the upper lifts open and only a few runs open, but it is skiing none the less. Be aware of the shallow snowpack and hazards under the snow.

Some precipitation is forecasted for the next few days, currently not cold enough to snow in the valley so might be rain below, snow up top. The middle of next week is also looking good for some snow and hopefully it will come in a huge blizzard.

For the resorts in Hakuba see below:

Hakuba Goryu:
Goryu has opened the Alps no daira Panorama course with the Gondola and No 1 pair lift moving and taking people up the mountain.

Hakuba 47:
47 is also now open - just the R4 course and the upper part of the R8 course at the moment with the Gondola, Line A/B and Line E lifts operating.

Tsugaike Kogen:
This resort is also open. The Gondola plus the Han-no-ki high speed pair lift and the Han-no-ki No 4 lift are now up and running.

Happo still hasn't opened up yet.

Other resorts:

Hakuba Iwatake plans to open for the season on 18th December.

Hakuba Minekata and Hakuba Sanosaka plan to open for the season on 23rd December.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Sunday 12th December 2010, 10:02am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light rain (town)
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A cloudy and slightly wet morning in Yuzawa. It's fairly chilly too with a temperature now of around 4 degrees. Higher up on the mountains there has been a sprinkling of new snow - Kagura reporting 3cm - though if anything it has retreated a bit back up the mountain viewing from town level, no doubt due to the mild temperatures of yesterday and rain.

Snow is still looking likely this coming week along with some very cold temperatures, especially around Wednesday. How much snow? Wish we knew. The forecast isn't quite as excting as it was looking for the same period a few days back, but fingers crossed we will be on for a decent snowfall.   Read more ...

New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Just a quick update with todays weather - generally it is a cloudy morning with a few spots of rain and the top part of the mountain covered in cloud and not visibile as I write this.

The snow on the lower slopes has for the most part dried up unfortunately as we wait for the snow!   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Sunday 12th December 2010, 11:16am
Weather conditions: Sun and cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Right now the sun is shining in Shiga Kogen. There's a fair bit of cloud around but lots of blue sky as well at the moment though it looks like it should cloud over as the day progresses.

The coming week is still looking promising for snowfall, starting hopefully later on tomorrow and through into at least Thursday. Look for temperatures to drop considerable perhaps into the minus double digits around Wednesday.

Lift operations similar to yesterday and now the Yakebitaiyama No 2 Gondola is operating.

Lifts currently operating in the different resort areas of Shiga Kogen:

Sun Valley:
1 lift

1 lift

Ichinose Family:

Ichinose Diamond:

Minakami Now!

Sunday 12th December 2010, 11:27am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Overcast today though not especially cold down in the valley. The sun was out earlier but has been covered now.

Tenjin are itching to get open and just need a bit more snow. If it had snowed last night they were going to take the plunge. They decided not to and are hanging on to see what happens over the next few days. The forecast is looking promising - as long as the temperatures stay low it could mean snow over the next few days.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Sunday 12th December 2010, 12:43pm
Weather conditions: Snow and wind
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday the light rain started turning to snow at village level in the early evening and then after around 10pm it really started coming down. The snow has been accompanied by gale force winds creating blizzard like conditions across the region and causing plenty of drifting. We have received 25-30cm since last report and it's still snowing out there. They are running the Family Lift today in Hirafu and there would be more lifts if it wasn't so windy. Once the wind dies down a little I think we can expect quite a few lifts to open around the resort.

The next couple of days temps will rise a little again getting a bit above freezing at village level with wetter snow to fall. From Wesnesday though temps will drop back significantly bringing the coldest weather this winter so far. Right through to Saturday the temps at the base are unlikely to get above -5 degrees and there should be plenty of classic Hokkaido powder falling. By next weekend I think we'll see most of the runs open for skiing.    Read more ...
