Weather conditions: sun and cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The groomers are still nice out there and the bumps are forming on the Legend of Shinya, Supercourse, and under the King lift making for more diverse on piste skiing. Today shouldn't be too cold with a low of -6 and a high of 0. Humidity is at 50%.

Winds shouldn't be to strong coming from the west and although it's sunny now expect later clouds to roll in.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Wednesday 12th December 2007, 8:32am
Weather conditions: Cloud, rain (snow at Kagura)
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Rain it is.... quite heavy rain last night and apparently through the night - this morning it is still raining heavily here in Yuzawa and doesn't look like it will stop anytime soon. Forecast to continue through the day until sometime this afternoon and clear up before we get more of it tomorrow.

It's a relatively mild 4 degrees here, with it -1 up on the main course of Kagura and the good news is that Kagura are saying that it is snowing up there.

Kagura has also announced that the entire Kagura will be open from this Saturaday (ie. all of Mitsumata, all of Kagura, all of Tashiro).

It looks like we have snow lined up for a good run from the beginning of the weekend in Yuzawa, so hopefully that will give us the snow needed to kick-start things down at town level.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Wednesday 12th December 2007, 9:00am
Weather conditions: Cloud, fog, light snow in places
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There is a fair bit of fog on this dark and almost gloomy mild morning with some light snow falling in places and a sprinkling of new snow overnight. Snow depths at the resorts unchanged as are lift operations.

Some of the first school trip groups are on the slopes of Shiga Kogen this week, making some runs busy while others are almost empty which sometimes feels quite odd. More snow will allow more lifts and runs to open up though, and it is looking like into this coming weekend we might be able to expect a decent snowfall.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 12th December 2007, 9:12am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Hakuba currently sits under a cloud bank that is at the 1000m.

The rain of yesterday and overnight in the valley has melted away most of the snow we did have at the base of Happo-One. It is not cold enough to snow today, but colder weather is expected this week with snow flurries.

Backcountry Travel Advisory:

There's enough snow now to produce large scale avalanches big enough to bury a person. Travel with caution if going back-country/off-piste. Also watch for partially buried rocks/stumps etc. under fresh powder. potential human triggered slides in wind deposited convex rolls and gullies. Be especially cautious with possible warming and rain mid week as well as solar radiation on southern aspects.

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 12th December 2007, 9:14am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Light snow this morning on the mountain and up at Kagura, who have announced that the whole of the Kagura resort area courses will be open from this coming Saturday, so hopefully with a top up over the next few days conditions up there should be good.

3 degrees in the village this morning and the top half of the mountain is covered in cloud, but clearer lower down. Operations at Naeba still the same as they have been as we wait for more snowfall to allow the resort to open up more.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 12th December 2007, 9:17am

It's overcast with light rain falling in the village this morning. Also raining on the lower slopes, but light snow has been falling on the higher sections of the mountain since late yesterday afternoon. There has been no significant change to the base depths with 1m at Yamabiko and 90cm at Uenotaira. There are winds of up to 30km/h at the summit, expected to ease this afternoon.

The forecast is looking good with temperatures expected to drop drastically and light to moderate snow expected on Friday.

Myoko Now!

Wednesday 12th December 2007, 12:08pm
Weather conditions: sleet and snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Temperatures in the valley remained relatively high throughout the night, so a fog has rolled up the mountain causing low visibility along with snow melting. The higher temperatures are supposed to end about now, with high snow amounts even in the valleys for at least a week.

The Akakura Resort has packed snow conditions (rather than the powder it usually has) and slush at the bottom.

Seki Onsen has got powder from top to bottom and is definitely the pick of the day.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Wednesday 12th December 2007, 19:27pm
Weather conditions: bright sunshine. first clear sky day in the last 3 weeks.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
RACERS RACERS RACERS.... they were everywhere today. In the ropeway you struggled to see a non-racing skier or snowboarder. A high volume of racers can be good though, becauase you know they are going to stay on the racecourse!

3cm of snow overnight was nice and helped all the cars and buildings glisten brightly in the morning sunshine. Clear blue skies for most of today, with views across the valley to the Tokachidake range for the first time since the resort opened.

Excellent skiing on piste, however the Spies course today had a racing event and so was only open half the width as usual. As I mentioned a few days ago the ski resort are making snow and it’s made the Spies run really icy. It is the only icy run on the entire mountain, and it looks tough for beginners as they struggle on the man made snow pack; be careful on the Spies run!

Sadly, there has been a tragic death on the Furano ski resort. A 26-year-old male from Tokyo died on December 10th after landing headfirst in deep snow. It is reported that he suffocated. Thoughts are with his family and friends.
