Weather conditions: Rain, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It was a warm night last night but temperatures are currently on their way down and it is around +4 degrees at the moment. It's also raining right now, but there is hope that it will turn into snow this morning and tonight with snow also forecast for all of tomorrow as well. Let's hope for snow!

There have also been some fairly strong winds overnight at times, and we have strong winds forecast today and so that may well affect resort lift operations (and because of the winds, Gala have announced that they will be closed today).

Weather conditions: Snow, cloud

Strong winds last night and it was a fairly mild night - but even so we have good news this morning. There is 15cm or so of new snow on the top of the car this morning and the snow is still coming down and it looks like we might be in for snow on and off today and all of tomorrow as well. With the fresh snow on the hills this morning and relatively mild temperatures it will be a good time to be out there. Some fairly strong winds may affect lift operations in some resort areas though, but hopefully not too much to spoil the fun. Bring it on!

Weather conditions: Snowing.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Great news, the forecast was right for a change and we have heavy snowfall here this morning. There is around 8cm on the ground here in town so should be around 15cm of fresh stuff on the mountain, which is the most we have had for a while now. There has been no wind so the snow is a consistent depth throughout. The temperature is still way too high; around -1 at 8am this morning so it is best to get up there as early as possible this morning and make the most of the good conditions while they last.

The forecast is looking good for the coming week; we should have snow all day tomorrow and then snow showers everyday for the next 3 days after that. The temperature should drop a little tomorrow but not as much as we would like.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Snowing up high.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There was a gale like wind around the peak yesterday. Otherwise it was a spring like day with relatively warmer temperatures. The snow pack up high has compacted down a little and down low some melting occurred.

It may have drizzled a little during the night in the village but there has been a cm or so of wet snow this morning with a little more up high. Currenlty its snowing up high and almost clear in the village. The snow showers are expected to develop during the day and get heavier overnight. This storm cycle will come with strong westerly winds. It is below freezing now and set to stay that way for the day so any moisture that comes will fall as snow to low levels.

Tomorrow the snow is forecast to continue, as is the strong wind.    Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Sunday 11th March 2007, 9:16am
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --

This morning about 0300 hrs. I awoke to the soft whoosh of the snow sliding from the roof of the Hira Kawa Research Station. A most welcome sound indeed. There was 19 cm of snow on the "Height of New Snow in 24 Hours" (HN24) snowboard at the 0700 hr. reading time. It was rather dense (80 kg per cubic meter). But then the air temperature was just below 0C. At 0730 hrs. the Happo One Lift Company terrain was visible up to 1,100 m a.s.l. The roads in the valley are a bit slick where there is any snow on the pavement. Snow at around 0C air temperature tends to be slippery stuff to drive on. At the higher elevations the snow should be lighter. The forecast calls for a break in the precipitation during the afternoon. Forecast high temperature in the valley is 3 C. The winds are forecast to pick up to 6 m/sec from the west around mid-day. That should translate as moderate (snow starts to be transported) higher up on the terrain.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Obscured
Temperature: Present: -0.5 C
Maximum: 10.0 C
Minimum: -3.5 C
Wind at surface: Calm
Winds aloft: Nothing visible
Precipitation: Snowing at the rate of 2 cm an hour accumulation
Barometer and trend: 909 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 19 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS):68 cm
Foot penetration: 15 cm
Surface: New snow, rimed, 2 mm
Density of surface snow: 80 kg per cubic metre
Crust: not observed
Cloud ceiling: just above my eyebrows

For guidelines to snow and weather observations see:

Above tree line:Considerable

Tree line: Considerable

Below tree line: Moderate

N.B. These hazard levels will increase with the daytime warming and increased load and wind transportation (local increase of load).

Travel Advisory:
With the HN24 of 19 at 830 m a.s.l. there is probably considerably more at tree line. The wind transport, and the existence and nature of the shears in this new snow will determine the true nature of the "Considerable" hazard rating. The visibility will probably be poor so beware the threat from above, whether it is a natural avalanche, a remotely triggered avalanche or an avalanche triggered by another winter traveller.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Sunday 11th March 2007, 9:42am
Weather conditions: Snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
10cm of good fresh snow fell last night on the mountain in Nozawa and it looks as though the weather has set in and will provide us with a long overdue dump! As of this morning the base depths are 180cm at the top and 100cm at Uenotaira. The lower reaches have minimal coverage and most of the lower lifts remain closed. The status of these lifts may change over the next few days as we are expecting around 30cm today and possibly 10cm tomorrow. Winds will pick up significantly tonight and tomorrow with up to 45km/h winds on the mountain tomorrow.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Weather conditions: grey sky

There was a distinctive feeling of Christmas this morning as I walked up the stairs to the office in the middle of March. A good 10cm of snow on the ground might have had something to do with it. It's been so long know since we've had this amount of snow down here in the 900's - Though of course there's been sprinklings like this on a regular basis up top.

So it's -2 here with some breezy gusts dropping the temperature down for some nasty wind chill. The weather is such a contract to the last few weeks, OK it's snowed at times, but this is definately what we've been wanting/needing - I keep having to look out of the window to remind myself.

So let's hope these low pressure systems keep up the good work.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Sunday 11th March 2007, 11:23am
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow coats the trees anove 800m this morning with the snow still falling at a constant rate of 2cm/hour. The wind is quite mild at present but it is expected to increase in intensity throughout the day. The snow is forecast to continue through to tomorrow evening but with the force of the winds much of the snow will not settle in exposed areas.
