Minakami Now!

Thursday 11th January 2007, 7:35am
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Light snow fell from 22:00 last night and has continued through to this morning bringing 10cm of fresh snow to the valley. The current temperature is -3 deg C at the valley level with todays forecast for the snow and clouds to give way to the sun around midday, which should make for excellent riding conditions on piste. It looks like Tenjindaira may get snow all day as the precipitation is lingering over Niigata.

The daytime temperatures were quite high yesterday causing some good settling in the snow, but also a bit of melting on the suface snow which created a small crust layer at lower levels but above 1200m this will not be noticeable.

The winds have finally disappeared meaning that any new snow from now on should start to cover any remaining icy patches. It looks like great conditions for the upcomming weekend.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Thursday 11th January 2007, 8:25am
Weather conditions: Slightly cloudy skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The light snow hasn't stop and is still coming. The weather at the moment is looking like it will stay the same till mid next week.

Today will be a good day to get up there early and scope out some fresh turns. Although mountain has been busy the past few days scoping some fresh tracks shouldn't be to an issue.

Fingers crossed that the peak will open and more of those deep turns will be there for the taking. Finding those fat lines and getting some face shots will be the highlight of todays riding.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Thursday 11th January 2007, 8:50am
Weather conditions: grey sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
-4 in the village this moring, Naeba is barely visible from the top of the village at Asagai. It's snowing lightly with a grey sky and a light to brisk breeze.

We've had a good 10 cm of snow since yetersdays report, and it looks to keep snowing for a while now - through the weekend anyway. There's a small amount of snow on the road - winter tyres and chains definately advisable for the weekend. Can't see if the gondolas are up and running yet, but the wind isn't so strong so you can bet one of them will be operating by 9:30 at least.

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 11th January 2007, 8:57am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow is coming down quite nicely at the moment, and we probably have about 10-15cm of fresh snow on the tops of cars this morning at town level. Add a bit more to that for higher up on the slopes and conditions out there today should be good.

The snow may well clear up later in the day and it is looking like tomorrow the sun might make an appearance.

Gala is open once more after closing for a few days for lift maintenance.

We'll update the page later on today with the latest...   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Thursday 11th January 2007, 9:07am
Weather conditions: Snowing, overcast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was without doubt the best day of the season so far and today should be much the same. It snowed all day yesterday and through the night. We have received another 30+cm in town over the last 24hours and 60+cm on the mountain. Yesterday morning there were very few areas open due to the fact that the groomers were having a hard time keeping up with the amount of snowfall. They gradually opened the different runs after grooming a thin strip down each of them. The parts that hadn't been groomed were waist deep in powder on the higher sections of the mountain. They had the whole mountain open by 11am and as there were very few people around we were finding untouched powder through the whole day.

It is -8 here this morning and looks like the cold weather and snow are set to last for a while yet.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 11th January 2007, 9:43am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's another cold start to the day in Shiga Kogen, but maybe not quite as cold as it was yesterday. At the moment light snow is falling outside but it looks like it may well clear up and that is indeed what the forecast is.

Conditions on the slopes are generally good with the topups we have been getting over the last few. We may not have the impressive numbers to compare with last year (or indeed an 'average' year), but the snow that is out there is generally good and there are lots of fresh tracks to find away from other people.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 11th January 2007, 9:57am
Weather conditions: Overcast, Light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We received 15 cm snow overnight up top and 10 cm in the valley to put a nice light layer of powder over everything. Winds are calm in the valley and visibility is good. Temperatures are cool at -3 in the valley and -6 at the tops of the Hakuba Goryu Gondola. Snow fluries are expected to continue spuratically through the week. The runs on the resorts in Hakuba a bare of skiers and snow boarders and will not be overly crowded this week end as well which makes it great for cruising the slopes.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m) the 0730 hr. reading is:
Sky: Overcast
Temperature: Present: -3.0 C
Maximum: 0 C
Minimum: -6 C
Wind: calm
Precipitation: S -1
Barometer and trend: unobserved
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 10 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS):81 cm
Foot penetration: 30 cm

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Hazard:
Above Tree Line: Considerable

At Tree Line: Moderate

Below Tree Line: Moderate

Discussion:
With the winds calming and temperatures staying steady the snow pack overall is stabalizing. With this bonding there will also be a denser surface slab being created that is 1 metre thick or greater in areas. This slab will be much thiner around ridges and rock outcropings and easier to trigger from these areas. Alpine areas are still rated as HIGH HAZARD because of the reacent high winds, large loading and persistant cold temperatures up high. Suspected -15 or colder in the alpine overnight last night. There is a thin surface hoar (frost) that formed last night all over the mountains that is slowly being burried now with the present snow fall.

Travel Advisory:
Slopes Below Tree Line (BTL) and at Tree Line (TL) are continuing to stabilize but Alpine (Alp) snow packs are slower to stabilize and Back country users should be increasingly cautious if traveling in Alpine avalanche terrain. Steep lee slopes should be avoided all together. Slabs are deep, increasing in density and will propagate wide in large Alpine terrain. Forested areas and chutes BTL may also still produce skier triggered slabs on steep tensioned and cross loaded slopes. One size 3 SE aspect observed on kairazu, multiple size 2's in the Alpine all aspects off of Happo One. Back Country users should use general caution taking care not to travel in across or below suspect tensioned slopes and in areas of promanant terrain traps.
If you do travel outside of the controlled area be aware of the potential of "remote triggering" of avalanches and that the hazard is still "Considerable" above tree line and that a naturally triggered avalanche starting above tree line can easily come to rest well below tree line.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 11th January 2007, 9:59am
Weather conditions: Snow!
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It looks as though the season is well and truly under way in Nozawa: another brilliant day on the slopes and the snow hasn’t stopped. Anyone who left earlier would be kicking themselves, and anyone still here is definitely a happy camper! It is currently snowing heavily outside and 15-20cm fell overnight. The temperatures are –6C at the top and between –2C and 0C in the village. The visibility on the mountain is not bad, similar to yesterday. In fact, coming down the Skyline in the late afternoon yesterday offered great views of the valley as the sunshine broke through the cloud cover and illuminated the village below.

The forecast is for light to moderate snow to continue at least untill Saterday night, and temperatures to get as low as -8C.
