Yuzawa Now!

Wednesday 11th January 2006, 8:45am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow is back this morning - about 20cm of snow overnight and still falling now. This might normally be good news, but at the moment most people are not hoping for more snow.... including many riders as some resorts are still not coping fully with the amounts of snow we have. People who do get out there though should be rewarded once more with very good snow conditions.

You might have heard about the road between Niigata (Tsunan) and Sakae in Nagano prefecture on the news that had been blocked by the huge amounts of snow. While this is over the mountain from Yuzawa, it is the main road over to Nozawa Onsen from the Niigata side and so for the moment that region cannot be reached directly from here.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Wednesday 11th January 2006, 9:01am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
As predicted the snow returned in the afternoon yesterday and it is still snowing this morning. Rising temperatures and stronger winds though have casued some settling of the snowpack. The snow should continue this morning and then ease later in the day.

Yesterday's good visibility meant 100's of people made the walk to the summit of Mt Annupuri. I made it up there after midday with three others and we still easily found fresh lines down the mountain. The views all the way to the Sea of Japan coast were spectacular.

Currently avalanche danger is relatively low but as stated previously care needs to be taken off piste as many crevasses have formed all over the mountain. Some are quite wide and have drops of 4m+ so be careful out there, especially in poor visibility.    Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 11th January 2006, 9:36am
Weather conditions: Snowing very heavily
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Well the blue sky days are only a memory today. Heavy snowfall is everywhere and the sky is overcast with low thick heavy clouds. The snowfall is so heavy that it is the factor affecting visibility, not so much hazy fog. The way the snow is pouring out of the sky looks almost unreal, like a theatre production with over active stage hands tipping the offstage buckets a little too enthusiastically, incredible. Not busy here today, at all, either. I might have to go and get up to my navel in the stuff, just to further my knowledge base for doing more accurate reports. The depth numbers for today don't seem indicative of the situation really, there must have been shrinkage yesterday when it was sunny.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 11th January 2006, 10:02am
Weather conditions: Thin overcast, snowing lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yet another blessing from "Ular The Norse God of Snow", the Hakuba Valley received 20cms of fresh overnight, and 30-35 cms up top. So more lines to be had everywhere. Skies are currently cloudy and it is snowing lightly at the base of Happo-One. Slighty warmer temperatures may make the snow a little heavier.

Winds were very strong 3 days ago and created wind slab in most areas in the alpine and at tree line. It is possible for this wind slab to slide on steeper slopes from areas of tension. ie. around rocks, from steep convexing terrain, corniced areas and from tensioned ridge areas that ave heavy wind deposits below.

In two recent pits in the tsugaike area the following was found of southerly facing slopes.

Tsugaike shizenen, elevation 1800 metres, aspect S
Compression Test Easy @ 38cm from surface on new snow, needles, columns with some faceting occuring size 0.5~2 mm, sudden collapse.

Rutsch Block 2 @ 38 cm

Slope Test. Ski cut, produced size 1 soft slab, 40 cm hieght of crown, 20 x 20 metres in area, deposit stopped mid track.

Tsugaike Tengupara, elevation 2000 metres, aspect SE
Compression Test Easy ~ Moderate @ 33 & 37cm from surface on fist density new snow underlaying wind crust and overlaying 1 finger density snow, with some faceting occurring just above 1 Finger layer, size 0.5 mm, Progressive Compression

Rutsch Block 5 @ 33 cm

Multiple slope use resulted in no slides on South East facing slopes in the Tsugaike area.

Natural avalanches unlikely. Human triggered avalanches possible.
Use caution in steeper terrain on certain aspects.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Wednesday 11th January 2006, 14:15pm
Weather conditions: Light snow > clearing up
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We had some snowfall later in the day yesterday and earlier on this morning, but that has cleared up now and it is currently clear with some clouds hanging on. Good conditions out there once more.

It looks like the coming weekend might see some unseasonably warm weather arrive which would be fun for skiers and snowboarders but increase the chances of avalanches thereafter - so take care if you are coming out to play.   Read more ...
