Nozawa Onsen Now!
Wednesday 11th February 2009, 8:37am
Occasional light cloud, closing in to snow
There is some light cloud hanging around this morning in Nozawa Onsen. It is -2 degrees in the village and -6 degrees up on Yamabiko, where there is a light southwesterly of around 10 km/h.
Yesterday was a mostly cloudy day, with a short period of fairly heavy snow, which was followed by light rain on the lower parts of the mountain. With the compaction and melting of the snow pack the reported snow depth has fallen by 5cm on both Yamabiko and Uenodaira despite the 5 or so centimeters that fell around midday yesterday.
The forecast is for light snow this afternoon followed by heavy snow tonight bringing a total of around 10-15cm of snow to the top and a mixture of snow and rain to the village. Thursday should be mostly fine before more precipitation on Friday night, falling as rain over the entire mountain. Sunday and Monday are predicted to bring snow to the resort and with much colder temperatures it should be snowing in the village too.
All lifts are expected to operate today.
All courses will be open except Mukoubayashi, Kurokura and Hachiman. Read more ...

Some light snow showers moved through the region during the afternoon yesterday but last night cleared and with no wind the temps plummeted. This morning in the valley it was down to around -16 and currently high cloud is increasing from the west as a region of low pressure approaches. Snow is expected to develop later today and continue through the night into tomorrow. Snow-forecast has changed it's forecast for Friday back to bucket loads of rain for region but JMA is still forecasting wet snow. As I said yesterday the exact path of the low pressure system is very difficult to accurately predict and the slightest variation can make all the difference between lots of rain or lots of snow. Hopefully it'll mostly be snow but at this stage some rain is very probable. Today all lifts and gates will open but people should not be traversing directly under cornices. The cornices grew dramatically during the storm over the weekend and remain unstable.
Well at least the electricity is back on today! Things got a bit chilly yesterday immediately after a couple of guys crashed their Chinook helicopter into a bunch of power lines in Gunma. I guess the butterfly effect would have been quite large considering how much we all rely on electricity these days. Not to mention all those people stuck on the Gondola's! For us, yesterday really did consist of a lot of 'not being able to do's' - so we actually all sat round and played a game! Amazing.
Quite a warm start to the day today, the sun actually felt quite warm on my blue sock whilst I clambered across the road on my aluminum walking aids (this person has a broken leg - look back to the 24th January in the reports - truly jinxed!), deciphering the hidden passage across the terrain of snow and black ice.
The sun is out today with some light cloud whimpering around the hills with minimal wind. All is go for the lift operations at both Kagura and Naeba.
In Thailand they like to say "same same" and that's about it for today. Blue skies with a few clouds, cold temps overnight warming to 0 degrees in the shade in the valley and no doubt it will warm up a bit in the sun though temperatures are predicted to stay low today.
Some light snow on the radar tonight, we have a low moving over us but with 1mm/h forecast we're not setting our bindings back quite yet. Got some warm temperatures for the weekend...fingers crossed the rain forecast for Friday avoids us.
Nice groomed runs this morning, no people around and no wind. Watch the icy patches and enjoy the slushy spots if it warms up enough.
Sorry for the late report today.... as the forecast though it has been a fine day, though clouding over somewhat later on and currently cloudy --- though we have snow forecast for tonight with perhaps 5-15cm falling at town level. We'll update you on that tomorrow morning....
Nighta tonight is at the following resorts in Yuzawa: Naeba Iwappara
In Minamiuonuma just to the north, nighta at: Ishiuchi Maruyama Centleisure Maiko Joetsu Kokusai
Another of those fine days in Shiga Kogen, though it looks like we will be seeing some failly decent snow overnight (already snowing!) and into tomorrow but it is unlikely to continue through the day with the forecast having things clearing up later. Lets hope we get a fair bit.
Official resort snow depths as of 11th February 09:
The power is still on in Minakami but an unrelated technical issues has prevented this from being posted earlier... sorry!
It has been a generally fine day today clouding over this evening and we should have some snow by tomorrow morning. Probably too much to expect too much, as the forecast has us down for more fine weather later in the day. Read more ...
