Yuzawa Now!

Monday 10th March 2008, 6:42am
Weather conditions: Cloud, good chance of sleet/rain later
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After the wonderful blue skies of yesterday, it's much more of a greyer start to the day this morning. Still fairly bright, but cloud all around and the temperature is above zero even early on. It feels rather mild this morning.

Right now nothing is falling from the skies but the forecast is for sleet later in the morning and then unfortunately it looks like there is a good chance of rain falling today and a maximum temperature of around +6 degrees. Hopefully higher up at places like Kagura we will be spared the rain and it might be snow.

There's a bit of a blustery wind at the moment outside but nothing to worry lift operations it seems.

Tomorrow looks set to be fine and sunny once again with the temperature creeping a little higher still.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Monday 10th March 2008, 7:29am
Weather conditions: Cloud, snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a very fine day and a good one to be out on the slopes.

Clouds have moved in though overnight and while it isn't particularly cold this morning (actually relatively mild), right now snow is falling in Shiga Kogen. There was a sprinkling of fresh snow to move on the car just before and it is coming down as I write this. Perhaps surprisingly it isn't that much below zero this morning and not much of a wind about either. Okushiga Kogen is even reporting a temperature of 0 degrees as of 7:30am.

It should be cloudy for the day and maybe snow on and off, hopefully it will stay low enough to keep anything falling to be of the snowy variety!

Tomorrow should see the clouds dispersince once again with the sun out doing it's thing again.

Nighta at the following resort areas of Shiga Kogen tonight:

Myoko Now!

Weather conditions: slight snows
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A slight coating this morning was unexpected but welcome as temps rise fast. The spring pattern this week will probably ruin Seki's chance of hitting the 7-metre mark this year, but all good things must come to an end.

Look out for any winter fronts moving in throgh this month, though.
The pick of the day is Suginohara: no crowds today, but nicely groomed, wide runs are all yours.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Monday 10th March 2008, 8:30am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It has been raining this morning in Nozawa. For a moment there was some sleety snow falling, which gives us hope that perhaps there is a little bit of fresh up top. It should be a very quiet day on the mountain today. The weather should clear up later on.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Monday 10th March 2008, 8:46am
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow is falling at the valley level at present but the forecast is predicting that it will turn into rain by morning, as a occluded front approaches from the South East. The upper mountains should stay snow for the entire day.

There is no more snow forecast for the rest of the week with warm temperature (10 deg+) expected. Things are definitely moving towards Spring snow conditions.

Backcountry Advisory
The recent new snow is still not bonding well with the older layer causing sluffs on steeper terrain. With the sudden increases in temperatures predicted this week be wary of wet slides and large glide cracks opening up.

Alpine: Moderate

Hakuba Now!

Monday 10th March 2008, 10:01am
Weather conditions: Rain/Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Beautiful weekend and a small amount of snow last night, then woke up to rain on the roof this morning for the first time since January 12. Temperatures dropped around 7:30 and the precipitation turned back to large snowflakes for a while. The current temperature in Happo is 1 degree and we're seeing a rain/snow combination here. Snow is falling at higher altitudes and Happo has reported since yesterday around 10-15 cms up top of fairly heavy snow. Forecast to clear up and another sunny day tomorrow...

Backcountry travel advisory:

The North face had good stability yesterday and it seems a lot of the new snow slides that were going to come down have done so. The South face has been looking pretty desecrated with a lot of cracks and holes opening up. Last nights heavy snow will be sitting on a melt freeze crust on the solar radiated South faces so small wet slides are likely. Also watch out for wind deposited layers on NE slopes which could go especially with warming.

Avalanche danger sits at Moderate at all levels however this will increase as it warms. Stability will decrease with more snow and decrease more rapidly with rain.

Avalanche Danger:

Below Tree Line: Moderate

Naeba Now!

Monday 10th March 2008, 10:42am
Weather conditions: white sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
On a visit to another room in the house early this morning I had a peek out of the window and thought we were in for a big dump... as the snow really was coming down. 2 hours later, there is the sound of relentless dripping. That must be the warm temperature then - attacking our lovely base of snow with its warming tentacles. So we're set for a warm day, the temperature is hovering around 7 degrees. No sun either - just a boring plain white sky.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Monday 10th March 2008, 11:55am
Weather conditions: Sunny.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The temperature is slightly higher today. By yesterdy afternoon the lower part of the mountain was very slushy, the result of an unbelievably sunny day. The higher slopes were slightly less soft but in general it was a beautiful spring day and a great day for riding or spectating at the Niseko frestyle competition.

There is the possibility of a change in weather as Wednesday approaches, but the biggest obstacle for new snow is the temperature. There are some low pressure cells forming to our north and to our west at present, but the probability of them bringing snow is not good when we have such warm conditions. Nonetheless, the probablity of these lows deepening is better at the end of the week, by Friday.   Read more ...
