Snow and weather reports posted on Sunday 1st April 2018
Thursday 10th January 2013, 8:07am
While there is no new overnight snow to report today it looks like it will be another great day to be out carving some turns. There is some cloud hanging around the tops but is it starting to lift and looks like it will be another fine blue sky day. Once again temperatures are pretty cold but the great weather should be more than enough to compensate for that. Read more ...

Some new snow to report this morning. A rather vague sounding 10-30cm at Kagura - presumably lower and upper areas - and more like 3-5cm here in Naeba village - so varying amounts but importantly some fresh snow. It is snowing this morning as well with snow forecast for the day. However it's not the kind of snowfall that brings with it large amounts of new cm on the ground so I wouldn't expect a big haul to report tomorrow morning. Could be wrong though!
Update --- that 30cm is coming from the Tashiro area.
Official resort snow depth: Naeba - 150cm Kagura - 320cm
All runs at Naeba open apart from Splash Bowl (though some lifts rested for weekdays including Prince No1 Gondola). Read more ...

I'm afraid the snow didn't get too much later on yesterday as hoped and I don't have any new cm to report this morning. Not in the village but perhaps a thin layer of new out there on the mountain.
It's a cloudy start to the day but a cold one out there. Minus ten when I got up and the resort is reporting a coldest temperature of -13C this morning.
Looks like after today we are going to have a few days of clearer weather conditions and milder as well over the weekend. No huge snowfalls on the short term radar now.
Cold temps are keeping the snow in decent condition though.
It has started to snow in Minakami this morning, but unfortunately at the moment there's no new snow to report on the ground.
It might not be an epic snowfall on the cards but is due to be falling all day today.
Some fresh snow for tomorrow is expected, so fingers crossed. Read more ...

Cloud, some clearances
I said light snow yesterday but for us here that translates to around 25cm since yesterday. Can't be bad. Sometimes it is difficult to know what to say in a morning, though a problem that is good to have!
Goes without saying, excellent snow conditions to be enjoyed.
Actually we have been having a whole bunch of conditions this morning - snow, easing off and the sun has actually made a (probably) brief appearance just now over in the Hanazono area. With snow forecast for the day, not sure how long that will last and I think it's likely that the cloud and light snow will prevail. Possibly stonger winds later on in the day but hopefully not enough to affect lifts.
JMA has the snowfall in Kutchan for January 2013 at 107cm so far; remember last year January saw 290cm snowfall for the whole month in the town. Counting up the numbers here on our reports I notice that we have now broken through the 7m mark for the season in the village area here.
Official Resort Snow Depths
Grand Hirafu & Niseko Hanazono Top - 350cm Bottom - 170cm
Niseko Annupuri Top - 320cm Bottom - 190cm
Niseko Village Top - 290cm Bottom - 190cm
Niseko base 6am: -11C, 35cm of crystal flakes snowfall overnight. Moiwa 800m: W8m/s, -16C. Annupuri peak: W11m/s, -18C. Coastal data: W12m/s, 1.8m waves and 1012hPa.
Heavy snowfall due to a moderate winter pressure pattern. Snowdrifts are slowly developing above 800m altitude and forming soft-slabs. The snow in the trees is good and deep. Caution is required in leeward open steep slopes and knolls as the newly formed soft-slabs aren't stabilized and could slide anytime. A 60cm thick surface slab avalanche is to be expected in cornice slopes at 900m Osawa, Backbowl and Higashione. Do not stimulate leeward slopes with heavy snowdrift deposit, and better not remain in valley bottoms to avoid being caught in a slide.
Peak gates are scheduled to open, however may be closed depending on the weather transition. Please respect the ski-patrol’s decision. Beware of collapsing cornices in Higashione. The cornices have grown big and are still very unstable; they could trigger a large avalanche if they fall.
Steep lines under the chairlifts and/or steep walls in gullies could also slide anytime and can be thick enough to bury someone to asphyxia; better not take things too easy. A long hike may be waiting at the bottom if you miss your route, snowboarders are recommended to carry snowshoes. Have a safe day. Read more ...
Nozawa Onsen Now!
Thursday 10th January 2013, 10:33am
Looking out the window in Nozawa this morning it seems the much anticipated fresh snow has arrived. Since last lifts yesterday we have had 15cm up top and 5cm in the village.
There should be fun riding throughout the resort today, but likely there will be a bit of a dust-on-crust phenomenon occurring. The snowfalls will continue till sometime tonight so the riding should improve through the day.
Yesterday was again very quiet on the mountain, but today looks like it will be busier with noticeably more cars making the way up to the car parks. Fresh snow can have that effect!
Temperatures over the past few days have been relatively warm during the day and even up top the snow was getting heavy. It was foggy down to mid-mountain yesterday so the best riding was the spring-like snow down on the lower runs.
Looking further ahead we have some variable weather on the forecast. Tomorrow there is a chance of morning snow showers and from then on there should be a clearing trend until the next possible snow around the 13th of the month.

Courses open: All courses open except: Kandahar West
A bit of a wind blowing about yesterday afterno on and a generally fine day lower down with upper areas covered in cloud.
No new snow to report in Hakuba this morning though some upper areas got a bit of snow overnight - Goryu reporting 5cm of fresh.
This morning there is more cloud around and covering most of the mountains around the valley, though I can still get a glimpse of some blue sky from time to time above the clouds and some sunlight getting through at times as well. Variable conditions, but generally fairly poor visibility on the resorts especially higher areas this morning.
Nice and cold and about -4 degrees C mid morning here and the cold conditions will probably continue into tomorrow. Even without much new snowfall, keeping cold is what we need to keep the snow we have in decent conditions.
We can expect light snow showers on and off today, clearing up by tomorrow.
After that, things are looking rather dry for the coming week with hardly any snowfall on the radar at the moment and perhaps a lot of the sun - a pattern that does not seem particularly mid-January-like to me.
Official snow depths and operations @ Thursday 10th January 2013 AM: Please note that resort lift operations are subject to change at any time.
Hakuba Goryu: No new snow reported on lower slopes and about 5cm upper areas at Hakuba Goryu this morning. Official snow depths: Alps daira - 255cm; Toomi - 120cm; Iimori - 90cm
Hakuba 47: 4cm up top reported by Hakuba 47 this morning. Official snow depth: Upper - 185cm Lower - 100cm
Morning from Yuzawa. Fresh snow! Not a huge amount for sure, but good to see snow falling once again this morning.
Very light snow was falling in Yuzawa from time to time in the day yesterday, then more snow started falling last night. Woke to a few cm of snow on the ground this morning and light snow falling. It has been like that since this morning and not much new on the ground but it does seem to be snowing more in the last half hour or so, and the local Niigata forecast tells us to expect 10cm or so before 4pm today.
Snow hopefully coming down the rest of the day and into tomorrow morning.
Milder conditions looking likely for Saturday and possibly clearer skies to start with but some snow later on. Nothing major though.
It is good to see snow back with us today. A few cm overnight and a few cm more on cars parked around areas as I was driving around earlier on. Light snow is still falling here in Maruike, but it's not heavy snow by any means - more the kind that will just give us a thin dusting so no changes to those snow depths shown below.
It looks like by tomorrow we might be back to clear and sunny skies over Shiga Kogen, with more of that on Saturday as well. In fact, aside from the chance of some sprinklings overnight, there doesn't seem to be much chance of snow in the coming week. Somewhat worrying for early-mid January. Cold front... this way please!
Nighta operations planned for tonight at the following resort areas: Ichinose Family Ichinose Diamond
Official resort snow depths as of Thursday 9th January 2013 AM:
No more blue skies this morning and about 20cm of new snow to report. Yey! Feels much more winter like this morning which is what we want.
A cold -6C and so conditions on the mountain this morning are pretty good if I may say so.
Hopefully we will get more snow by tomorrow because after the clouds are set to clear again. Saturday is looking all sunny and rather mild once again and a bit too much snow on the weekly forecast for my liking too right now.

Ah, those dark clouds on the horizon yesterday did their job--we have some Myoko-style snow falling right now. A little lighter than it can get, but what it can get can also shut things down, so no complaints today! It's been picking up through the day, too, so we've got a nice layer of powder to enjoy.
A special hello to some readers who I met recently, and who uncovered my secret Snow Japan identity--thanks for reading, and the nice comments!
