Nozawa Onsen Now!

Saturday 10th February 2007, 8:11am
Weather conditions: Clouds and mist.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A light dusting of snow on the mountain again last night and a mostly cloudy start to the day. At present on Yamabiko the visibility is almost zero but lower down at Uenotaira you can see quite far, although it is slightly misty. The base depths are unchanged with 170cm still at the top. Temperatures are warmish once again with 1C at the top and 2C in the village in the village however we are expecting snow so the temperatures will drop later today.

The forecast is for heavy snow tonight. Snow should continue all day tomorrow. Over 20cm expected over the two days. Winds may be as high as 25km/h today.

Furano Now!

Saturday 10th February 2007, 8:14am
Weather conditions: Bluebird.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We have a beautifully clear, blue sky here this morning for the first time in weeks. It is currently -13 in town and all the trees are covered in a thick layer of frost. It will be a great morning for taking photos on the mountain. We have had around 10cm of snow on the higher sections of the mountain in the last 24 hours but the lower sections were feeling a little compacted and crusty yesterday afternoon.

The forecast is predicting a return to the cloudier weather this afternoon with a good chance of snow showers everyday for the next 7 days.

There is a free tea ceremony tonight in Kankan mura (the ice bar area near the gondola) and there will be a local guitarist playing in the ice bar.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Saturday 10th February 2007, 8:44am
Weather conditions: High cloud.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
I wasn't here yesterday but it seems like it was a mostly clear day. No new snow fell yesterday or overnight. It was a cold night, -9 degrees at 7am this morning in the village.

This morning there will be light winds and high cloud. This afternoon the wind will increase as will the cloud cover. The forecast is for snow to begin later this afternoon or early evening. This snow should continue into Sunday and get heavier as the day goes on. The wind is also forecast to increase during Sunday. Currently the visibility will be good for much of the mountain however it will deteriorate as the day goes on.    Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Saturday 10th February 2007, 9:19am
Weather conditions: Grey
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Again, the top half of Naeba can not be seen this morning. So expect to see absolutely nothing at the top of the mountain. Though there's a difference to the look of the mountain, yes it has snowed! From the village it looks like a good 10+cm - there is a lot of rock coverage on the ridges.

Things are in misery down here at the 900m though - it has been raining on and off since around 5pm yesterday, and it's 2 degrees this morning. Oh dear.

Anyway, we can be sure of a good stash of snow up there in the Kagura area and of course on top of the Naeba hill. So it's all about tonight and tomorrows snow forecast then... looking good.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Saturday 10th February 2007, 10:11am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The rain seemed to clear later on last night, and early on this morning it was just raining very lightly. At the moment it is just cloudy, and about +5 degrees, and that is what is forecast for the day.

OK, so everyone is highly expectant about the snow falling tomorrow - at the moment we are being told that up to 20cm of snow is forecast to fall in the next 24 hours and the snow clouds to be with us through Monday as well. Let's hope that they are right this time!   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 10th February 2007, 10:13am
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The rain was pitter pattering on the roof all night such that there was 14 mm of water in the precipitation gauge this morning at 'reading time' (0700 hrs.). The good news is that there is fresh snow on the trees at about the 1,100 m a.s.l. line. New snow, at a density of 100 kg/cubic metre, would be 14 cm deep with that amount of water (14 mm). So be of good cheer. Also there is a forecast for more snow fall this evening (about 1cm per hour for 15 hours).

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Broken clouds
Temperature: Present: 2.0 C
Maximum: 10.0 C
Minimum: 0.5 C
Wind at surface: Calm
Winds aloft: Moderate from north-west (upper layer of clouds moving)
Precipitation: Nil
Barometer and trend: 909 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 0 cm
Amount of water(rain) in 24 hours: 14 mm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 75 cm
Foot penetration: 21 cm
Surface: melt/freeze crust
Density of surface snow: not measured
Crust: 0.5 cm
Above tree line: Considerable

Tree line: Moderate increasing to Considerable with daily warming

Below tree line: Low increasing to Moderate with daily warming

N.B. hazard will increase with day time warming. The forecast high in the valley is 7C. Use your thermometer! Also the wind at ridge top in the alpine (above tree line) is moderate (20 to 40 km/hr) from the north-west. Snow plumes are visible all along the Norikura Dake and Tengu Para. The fracture lines on the south slope of Norikura Dake is filled in.

Travel Advisory:
The new snow (possibly 20 cm or so above tree line) is being moved around by the wind. The formation of soft slabs is probable. At tree line the pockets of buried surface hoar are now more deeply buried although there is the possibility that there was more (surface hoar) formed on the night of 2007-02-07 that is now preserved under possibly 30 or more cm of snow at these elevations.

Below tree line, especially below 1,500 m a.s.l. the overnight rain has introduced a lot of load on the isothermal (all the same temperature i.e. 0C) snow pack and has not added any strength to the snow pack. With the daily warming, especially on steep sun affected slopes surprises could be encountered especially if the 'surprise' pushes you into some creek hole head first.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Saturday 10th February 2007, 10:53am
Weather conditions: Cloud, sun, variable
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A mixed bag this morning. The forecast for this morning is cloud and sometimes snow but right now the sun is out and there is a fair bit of blue sky on view. There are a fair few clouds but it feels like it is turning out to be a fine day. Temperatures are mild once again.

The good news is that there has been a sprinkling of new snow overnight, though not as much as we might have liked, and we have snowfall forecast for tomorrow and Monday. Here's hoping for some decent snowfall.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Saturday 10th February 2007, 11:28am
Weather conditions: Sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The sun is shinning and it is very warm in Minakami at present. It almost feels like Spring and the snow conditions are very Spring-like at all of the lower fields. At the higher fields there was around 5cm of new snow last night.

The remainder of today will stay warm but it will cool down tonight and the snow is forecast to hit tomorrow morning. It should snow for the entire day bringing around 20cm+ to the valley.
