Yuzawa Now!

Wednesday 10th December 2008, 8:45am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It clouded over yesterday but was very mild - temperatures rose to around 18 degrees in Yuzawa yesterday, around 11 degrees higher than usual for the time of year. Those clouds brought rain yesterday evening and this morning it is still cloudy with just a few spots of rain falling just before. It is currently around 7 degrees.

Not the best of news regarding Kagura this morning - with the snow disappearing from Mitsumata once again that shuttle bus is out and in action again (taking people from the top of the Mitsumata Ropeway to the Gondola base station).

Still maybe some light snow tomorrow night and then over the weekend, but unfortunately right now a decent dump is not in the forecast for the week. Forecasts have been known to be wrong though....   Read more ...

Rain, Clouds, Sun

Wow, it was pouring rain for a while this morning, but thankfully, it has now stopped.

My mobile phone predicts sun later today, and the internet agrees. This reporter sees a few patches of blue already. The best news is that it's going to get down to -7 C tonight, high of 0 C tomorrow, with snow forecast for the next two days. Yeah.

The two ski rental shops are now open for business in Kitanomine. One opened last week, and the other set up their skis/boards yesterday. Both great shops.

I also heard that the tram is open on Asahidake, the smoking volcano of Hokkaido. You can book with a certified guide, and ski off-piste pure powder starting now. Elevation is higher than the Furano ski area, so it's been getting snow every time we get rain here. How often do you get to ski on a live volcano? I'm looking forward to trying it out this year.

Still in wait & see prep mode. Hopefully that will change soon.

Niseko Now!

Weather conditions: Partly cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A very mild day yesterday with temps up close to 10 degrees at the base. Last night briefly dropped to freezing before a few rain showers moved through again. This morning there was some fog and low lying cloud with drizzle but that appears to be clearing now. The cover on the lowest slopes has taken a battering and in high traffic areas it is getting very thin.

Today will remain mild and mostly fine but colder air will start moving over the region tomorrow and snowfalls are forecast. At this stage it should remain below freezing for at least the next week with regular snowfalls as the weather systems appears to be finally settling in to a more normal winter pattern.

Lifts open today;

In Hirafu the Ace Family, #2 & #3, Swinging Monkey, Hirafu Gondola and the Hooded Triple are running. At Hanazono the #3 lift is running.
In Niseko Village Gondola, Banzai & Community Chairs are running.
In Annupuri the Gondola, Jumbo #'s 1,2 and 3 are running   Read more ...

Myoko Now!

Wednesday 10th December 2008, 9:06am
Weather conditions: sunny with clouds moving in
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The sun remains on the Suginohara side but rains are falling on the Seki Onsen side, washing away most of the snow base they had. Certainly not the blustery pre-season we had last year. Temps are slowly sinking this week, however, with snow slated for Friday onwards.

At least the sun isn't out this morning!

It's a very cloudy start with a hint of rain in the air up top though it looks like it should hold off for most of the day. The runs up there still have decent cover but are certainly in need of more snow. Currently there is no snow on the lower part of the mountain.

Yamabiko A- 1300m
Yamabiko C - 850m
Yamabiko D - 1250
Uenodaira - 2000m

Lifts operating:
Nagasaka Gondola
Yamabiko Four lift
Yamabiko No2 Four lift
Uenodaira Four lift

Forecast remains similar to how it was looking yesterday.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Weather conditions: Clear blue skys
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a beautiful sunny day in the mountains. We are seeing clear blue skys right now. More sun and possibly some rain is predicted for tomorrow. Hopefully it will start get colder so some of that rain can turn into some good snow!

The lower slopes are still really patchy and we need a decent snowfall to fully cover them.

It did rain some last night but this morning things are clearing up some.

Looking at the webcams, things look fairly clear up at Kagura right now where cloud/fine is the forecast for the day. Snow is forecast for tomorrow night and then some over the weekend so everyone is hoping that will bring some decent cm with it.

Mitsumata is getting pretty bare once again and alas they need to bring out the old shuttle bus to take everyone from the Ropeway to the Kagura Gondola to get up to the main part of Kagura.

Officially the current 'lifts' are operating at Kagura:

Mitsumata Ropeway
Shuttle bus (!)
Kagura gondola
Kagura No 1 quad lift
Kagura No 4 romance lift   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Wednesday 10th December 2008, 9:56am
Weather conditions: scattered cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The rain fell hard last night at the valley level with temperatures up around 6 deg C. The rain has now cleared up but the temperatures remain high with 9 deg C currently at the valley level.

The forecast for next couple of days looks like more warm weather with rain forecast at the valley level on Thursday. The remainder of the week looks like the temperatures will drop but no more precipitation until Sunday.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, cold temperatures are expected to hit Japan from around Dec 20th onwards. The lower lying ski areas are all in need of a cold snap to enable snow making.

Ski area opening:
Tenjindaira is curently open with all lift running.
Houdaigi is scheduled to open from this Saturday but it is likely they will not be able to open until the 20th.
Norn, Okutone and Minakami Kogen are scheduled to open from the 20th.
