Original report:

Morning.

There is actually some snow to report this morning.

But, some more important news:

Grandeco Snow Resort planned to be open this coming weekend but that's not happening. They have closed for the season, their last day was Sunday 5th April.

Nekoma were planning on remaining open until 6th May, but they are also cutting their season short. Sunday 12th April will be their last day of the season.

The coronavirus situation is the reason for both.

For people at Nekoma, generally clearer skies are forecast for the weekend.

I will post a final report for the season on Sunday.

---

Hoshino Resort Urabandai Nekoma:
- 2 (of 5) lifts operating
- 7 (of 11) courses open
- The walk course connecting Nekoma with the top of Alts Bandai is closed today
- Official snow depth: 135cm (top)
- Plans to be open until 12th April

Hakuba Now!

Friday 10th April 2020, 7:27am
Weather conditions: Cloud and...
New snowfall: 2cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Hakuba.

It's snowing. (Of course it is!)

It shouldn't last for long but there's 2-3cm of snow at resort base areas, more of a dusting in some areas around the village. Clearer skies are due later... and tomorrow.

---

Earlier this week, Hakuba Happo-one and Tsugaike Kogen both closed for the season within a day of the 'state of emergency' being announced by the Japanese government for Tokyo and six other regions of the country.

I was wondering how the two remaining ski resorts would react, and yesterday we found out. Hakuba 47 made clear of their intention to remain open - at least for the time being. They made various reassurances about offering hand sanitizer, staff wearing masks, keeping windows open, limiting the number of people in each gondola cabin, etc.

So for the moment, Hakuba 47 (almost fully open) and Hakuba Goryu (top area and the narrow Toomi run open) remain in operation.

Over the last few days I have heard many opinions from friends and acquaintances; opinions from people both here in Hakuba and elsewhere.

As Happo-one noted, many visitors to Hakuba come from the very same places that are currently being asked to 'stay at home'.

I have my own opinions on all of this, of course, though as always I would very much prefer to remain out of politics.

Every year I take pride in posting a Hakuba Now report throughout the season... every day of the season, from late November through until early May. At times it feels difficult to keep going, but I always get there in the end.

But I'm afraid I am going to have to depart from that normality this year. Because right now is not normal. Whatever way you look at it.

I am going to continue to document the season for as long as it continues. I plan to post a few weather updates each week. But I am cutting back from the 'daily' thing.

Please accept my apologies, but it just feels like it is the right thing to do.

And on that same kind of note, let's all do what we can to stop this thing.

Take care.

Love Hakuba.

About the data in the above ‘snowfall as reported by ski resorts’ table
* The table within the above report contains data that is published by individual ski resorts
* The data shown is the amount of snowfall that the ski resorts are themselves reporting each 24 hour period on the upper areas of their mountain
* The source ‘new snowfall’ data and ‘total accumulation’ data is not updated at the same time
* The ‘new snowfall’ data is updated in the morning
* The ‘accumulation’ data is apparently updated/refreshed at midnight
* That means that there is a time lag between the two numbers being updated
* We manually check and update the data just before we publish each Hakuba Now report - so the data in each Hakuba Now report table is what is available at that time
* Any odd-looking numbers are due to the source data. We are not responsible for and have no control over the data. We are simply sharing the data with you
* Just to be extra clear, unlike our own ‘observed snowfall’ data from base that we show at the top of each report, the data in the table is not an independent observation by SnowJapan
* A more in-depth introduction and explanation can be found in this report   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Friday 10th April 2020, 7:52am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: 2cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Shiga Kogen.

Another dusting of snow here and there does actually look like there might be further dustings (or more) over the coming days, particularly Monday. But before that the chance of some sun over the weekend at times.

People in Tokyo and other areas are being asked to 'stay at home'. Personally, I think we should be doing that more than is being suggested. For everyone.

I will update again next week. Stay safe.

Good morning from Nozawa.

It may be 10th April but it is snowing and the lower slopes of Nozawa Onsen once again are looking white. See the images below.

Niseko Now!

Friday 10th April 2020, 8:24am
Weather conditions: Mostly cloudy
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Niseko.

A lot of cloud around this morning but some clearer areas and we might get sun at times during the day today. And tomorrow too.

And it looks like it shouldn't be warming up too much.

-----

A personal note.

Let me note what my colleague down in Hakuba has posted this morning. After actually talking with them yesterday, I know that I certainly share their feelings.

Due to its location, Hakuba in particular has large amount of guests coming in from those particular areas.

Regarding Niseko. I believe that it is now actually physically difficult to get up here (from afar). I am guessing that the few people that are still out on the mountain here are either people who live nearby, or people who were already here.

In general, I would say that people staying at home sounds like a very sound idea to me. I had been encouraged by the relatively low numbers that Japan was reporting, but with the numbers increasing and cities seemingly still relatively busy... it worries me.

I will continue to post my updates here to complete the record of the season.

Stay safe and take care.

Myoko Now!

General message from SnowJapan (added 20th April 2020):

Original report:

Post-season (sort of) update

** Please also see this main last report of the season **

A little last-minute information for anyone still in the area (or those interested in what's going on in Myoko).

First: snow.

Nine (9) centimeters overnight, and it's still falling very lightly. Just in time for the cherry blossoms down just a little lower (I doubt the snow is falling in greater Myoko City, at 300 meters or below).

And the final word on the last two resorts that are still operating.

Seki Onsen says it will be open this coming weekend, which is the first definite word from them for a while (I really wasn't sure if they were really open over the last few weeks, since they are no longer in the city's official website, and their own site is, ah, distinctly their own). After that? I doubt they can keep going.

And Lotte Arai has announced that, due to the corona virus, the 12th will be their last day of operations. If it's anything over there like it is here at the Akakura Kanko Hotel, things are slow.... We wondered if city folk would be fleeing to the clean, microbe-free are of the mountains, but don't look like it.

So there is the official, final word, and we can actually close out this wild season. With snow.
