Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Things did clear up for the most part yesterday with the sun making an appearance.

Favourable reports coming in from Kagura over the weekend with them reporting up to 20cm of new snow again up there yesterday with a fair bit coming down at times in the morning. There really is a large amount of snow up there.... it's hard to believe that we are already well into April!

Today it is another fairly cold morning, but it is grey and overcast with clouds all round.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Cloudy & overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There was some more snowfall over the weekend (probably about 20cm or so), with the weather clearing up yesterday afternoon with the sun out for a while. But that snow means that conditions are once more pretty decent, especially considering that it is April.

Today is overcase with clouds all round. It's fairly bright though.

More of the areas of the resort have now closed for the season. Areas of Shiga Kogen that are still (at least part) open are:

Hakuba Now!

Monday 10th April 2006, 10:03am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Today is overcast yet the visibility on the resorts is good. There is no wind down in the valley and a slight breeze up high. Temperatures are warmer than the past few days and there is a 50% chance of rain this afternoon. The conditions will be soft groomed on the resort. The new snow from yesterday was mostly skied up on the resorts but there may be some soft shoulders still waiting to be hit.

Unfortunate news: There were multiple Avalanche deaths yesterday in the Hakuba mountains. 6 people from a group of 12 people were swept away in a large slide off the north side of Goryu Toumi Ridge and 2 people from the 6 swept away died. In another incident 3 people died and 1 remains missing from a group of 5 who were on their way from Tsugaike to Renge Onsen. Another person was injured in the Mountains above Omachi and 1 is missing in Kamikochi.

Avalanche danger remains HIGH.

Natural and human triggered avalanches LIKELY. Travel in avalanche terrain not recommended.

The recent snow fall has put 40 cm of new heavy spring snow that is not bonding well to the wind crust and ice that is below. As temperature rise this hazard will be increasing. Be very aware that the forcasted rain for this afternoon and tomorrow will create very unstable conditions in the back country.

Best to stay on the piste in side the resorts today.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Monday 10th April 2006, 13:23pm
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Spent yesterday in Sapporo where it was quite cool and overcast with the occasional snow shower. On the way back to Hirafu the snow showers became a little heavier and a dusting of snow settled over the region.

Today it has been fine with high cloud and mild temperatures. There is still some reasonable snow quality up high but spring conditions will dominate most of the available skiing area.

Tomorrow should be even warmer and then some rain should move through on Wednesday. After that it should fine up again. Overall there are still great conditions out there for mid April with total snow cover from top to bottom.    Read more ...
