So onto the last day of what has turned out to be a generally excellent January.

This morning the snowfall continues.

Yesterday actually saw the snowfall ease off somewhat and we even say one or two periods of clearings in the clouds, especially in the afternoon, by by night time it was back to the snow and this morning there was more than 30cm on my car in Minamiuonuma. A look around Yuzawa and it seems that there was a similar amount of snow around here, though perhaps slightly less than Minamiuonuma this morning. But it is currently coming down really fast as well this morning - the type of snow that quickly results in a lot of cm of snow.

Resorts around town are clearly becoming increasingly concerned about safety issues. Obviously they are happy to see lots of snowfall - and it probably means that we are looking at a good long season as well. But with so much snow falling in such a short period of time, there is of course potential danger out there. Increased messages over the tannoys and on resort websites asking people to stay in-bounds and on the courses of the resort. Highly recommended at this time, and care really needs to be taken - there's plenty of fine, find snow on the courses of resorts. There's a ton of fun to be had right now, but just need to remain aware of where you're going.

Maiko is the first resort in the region to officially hit 400cm. Other than some limitations up at Kagura, it looks like all resorts are open as normal.

Around town those snow walls are getting ever more impressive. A few more days of this and they will possibly be the biggest I have ever seen. When things clear up a bit we'll get some photos up to share. The amount of snow on the top of some buildings that haven't been cleared recently is getting quite alarming as well.

So when will this snow stop falling? It looks like perhaps Friday is our first chance of seeing it all ease off. For the moment though, it's snow for the rest of today and most likely tomorrow as well.

6pm update

Since the report this morning things cleared up quite a bit in and around town - late morning into early afternoon we even saw sunshine and some blue skies over the area. It was also rather mild and rose to around +2 degrees at one point. Cloud moved back on in fairly quickly though and we are back to light snowing this evening. The local forecast tells us to expect up to 20cm of snow overnight and for tomorrow to bring with it some potentially strong winds and more snowfall.

It's also increasingly looking like generally conditions will clear up somewhat starting from Friday.
