Report re-written and updated at 10:00am

Good morning from Yuzawa.

It was rather strange weather yesterday. While it was bright and sunny, particularly in the morning it remained rather hazy in some directions and there was a sea of clouds lingering over parts of Minamiuonuma for a large part of the morning. There was also a gusty wind at higher elevations during the daytime. But it was generally sunny and, as expected, a mild day.

No fresh snow to report overnight.

This morning there was just a bit of cloud above Yuzawa early on, but clouds have moved in since then with some spots of rain starting to happen. Hopefully it will get colder later on and it will be snowing will be snowing by the end of the day and overnight tonight.

A fresh layer of snow tomorrow morning would be good.

There is some more unfortunate news to report this morning.

It seems that some staff were tested positive for coronavirus at Naeba and as a result, both Naeba and Kagura ski areas have announced that they will be closing from Monday (18th January) through until the early part of February.

A few other ski areas are going to be doing varying degrees of 'scaling down' - though remaining open - from Monday as well. Here's what we know:

GALA Yuzawa:
The Sociable lift will be closed on weekdays for the time being, with slightly earlier closing times. These lift changes will not affect the ski runs that are open.

Kagura:
The Tashiro Area is closed 16th-17th January; all areas of Kagura will be closed from Monday 18th January until early February (no confirmed re-opening date)

Joetsu Kokusai:
The Atema and Osawa areas are currently closed for the time being (no confirmed re-opening date).

Muikamachi Hakkaisan:
Currently closed and will closed be until early February (no confirmed re-opening date).

Naeba:
Closed from Monday 18th January until early February (no confirmed re-opening date).

NASPA Ski Garden:
The Number 3 lift will be rested on weekends but all courses will remain available. The Number 2 and 3 lifts will be rested on weekdays, when the C course will be closed (all other courses open). This change is planned until 7th February.

That is the information we can gather as of this morning. There may be other adjustments.

Really sorry and disappointed to have to report such news. We can only do our best to remain positive, stay safe and appreciate what we can.

The wording used by ski areas for these changes varies, but it looks like it is a mixture of 'prevention' as well as dealing with the fact that there are clearly fewer people around due to the state of emergency in various regions. It's really hard to see ski areas, hotels and related businesses hurting right now, some more than others. It was reassuring yesterday to see the other people out there wearing face masks and keeping distance. I was out skiing for a few hours and did not share a ski lift with anyone during that time or even actually talk to anyone. So that was surely a safe thing to do. And it sure felt good (to help support as well as the skiing). We all need some of that.

Anyway. Let's positive thinking.
