It is snowing again in Nozawa and it has been a great long weekend so far. Today should be a continuation as it has been snowing on and off since yesterday and all last night. It is slightly busier than a normal weekend, but apparently the crowds have been thinning out as the day wears on. Because of these colder than normal temperatures the quality of the snow is really good. Another front is coming through tomorrow night, with lots more snow expected. The crowds will all be back in the rat race by then, and according to a local powder junkie, conditions are going to be 'special'.

Tomorrow the fire festival takes place in Nozawa. 42 year olds will climb atop a wooden shrine protected by the 25 year olds, as the rest of the villagers carry out fire attacks trying to burn down the shrine. It is ranked in the top three fire festivals in Japan and should be a great spectacle.

Unfortunately, last year there were some problems with tourists trying to take part in the fire attacks and getting into fights with locals. Three foreigners were rescued by the fire department after they were found comatosed in the snow from too much sake at 1 am, when everyone had left the ceremony grounds. To combat this problem everyone watching the fire festival is required to carry identification and a form provided by their place of accommodation saying where they are staying. This year the police presence will be increased and anyone breaking the rules of the festival will be swiftly evicted. Just remember, it is a spectator event and participation is for villagers only. Other than that, stay safe and enjoy the event!
