The beautiful sunny start to yesterday deteriorated rapidly by the afternoon and by the evening heavy snow started moving across the region. Initially a band of precipitation moved through with an associated warm front and the snow was a little heavy but after a short break the cold front started moving through as the low pressure system moved rapidly eastward. There has been up to 30cm of new snow overnight but it has been accompanied by strong to gale force winds which have caused significant drifting around the resort.
This morning the winds have moderated slightly but the top lifts look unlikely to open. The significant drifting has pushed up the avalanche danger and most gates will remain closed today. Snowfalls are expected to continue throughout today. Tomorrow will see another weak low approach from the west and the winds will turn back around to a more mild southerly with temperatures expected to get just over freezing at the base of the mountain. Cooler air will move through later with further snowfalls that will continue into Tuesday.
