Good morning.

Well, I'm sorry to have to report that it was raining yesterday, starting from the afternoon and getting stronger in the evening.

It's not going to be very nice out there this morning.

I would imagine some icy conditions. But hopefully some snow today will help cover it up.

In the meantime it appears that all of the top lifts and gondola lifts at Niseko Annupuri and Niseko Village are on hold at the start of the day due to windy conditions on the mountain. The Hirafu Gondola is starting the day.

I think I am going to take it easy and learn some new toast recipes.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Mountain base: -0.9℃, slight snowfall. Moiwa 800m: ENE 62°7.2m/s, -1.9℃. Yu no sawa 1000m: NNE 39°8.3m/s, -3.9℃. Village 1000m: NNW 349°5.8m/s, -3.3℃. Hirafu 1000m: N 3°10.4m/s, -4.0℃. Hanazono 720m: NNW 343°3.8m/s, -2.4℃. Benkei cape: ENE6m/s, Kamui cape: SSE2m/s, 1004hPa, 1.0m waves. Annupuri 1000m snow depth: 160cm.

Niseko range and the Shakotan peninsula seems relatively calm. A strong NE wind is blowing above 800m elevation and wet snowdrifts are developing. Looking at the morning weather data, surface slab avalanche of 30-70cm thickness from Jan 18th or 28th are highly likely to occur in Haru no taki cliff area, steep slopes under lift-lines and other steep banks. The snow is heavy so potentially dangerous even shallow. Better not overestimate knowledge/experience and underestimate the hazards or you’re putting your life in danger

Overall, the risk of getting injured while riding is higher than the being caught in an avalanche today. The out of bounds slopes are bumpy. Better wear a helmet. Gates opening is undetermined. Respect the ski patrol’s decision. This information is released for the safety of all resort users. Abide by the Niseko Rules and the freedom to ride will be respected. Safety of all users are a big concern here. Beware of sudden weather changes. The snow will get better soon. Have a nice day.
