Good morning my Niseko-loving friends.

I am happy to report that things are calmer this morning. Yesterday morning the silly wind kept lots of lifts closed, but the situation seemed to improve during the afternoon.

I'm afraid I don't have any fresh cm of snow to report to you, just a very slight dusting.

There is a lot of cloud around early on and the top part of Mt Yotei is currently covered. A bit of a hint of some blue sky in places though...

Hopefully snow will be falling by the end of today and through tomorrow and beyond.

---

Tomorrow is your last chance to use the Niseko Grand Hirafu 'Early Morning' service (details below).

---

One more report left in January. I'll aim to post my look back at the numbers for January and the season so far on Monday.

In the meantime, don't forget you can see the numbers at any time lower down on this page, and further details by clicking on the cunningly titled 'Snowfall Analysis' button towards the top of this page.

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Mountain Base 6.00am: -6°, no new snow in the last 12 hrs. Moiwa 800m: -7°, W2.8m/s, cornice and snowdrift development, no new snow in the last 12hrs. Mikaeri Weather Station: snowdrift development, light winds, good visibility. Annupuri 1120m: snow depth 200cm. Hirafu Peak: -12°, calm. Kutchan Weather Station: -7.4°, snow depth 154cm. Suttsu Weather Station: -2.2°, snow depth 49cm. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:W2m/s. Kamui Cape: SW6m/s, pressure 1023hPa,wave 1.0m.

Currently we are under a high pressure system with light winds, calm. From observation the snow drifts have stabilised and the avalanche risk is low. From snowfall transition expect a significant layer from Jan 30. There is major cornice and snowdrift development from Jan 29 wind snow on leeward slopes, 30cm of growth from a change in wind direction and a layer formed by temperature change. Be careful stimulating fractures on steep slopes, shallow surface avalanches could easily occur. Do not remain in the valley bottoms.

Peak gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice and be prepared before venturing out the gates. Do not traverse cornice slopes or stimulate knolls. Although the snow has stabilised there is no guarantees in the winter mountains. Always be cautious. Snow in the trees is good but wind packed. Be careful catching a tip. Beacons and helmets are recommended. Have a good day.
