Finally a big fall of snow to get conditions back to where they should be at this time of year, deep powdery goodness. We've had 40-50cm of snow since last report and this afternoon the skies have cleared a little so people can enjoy their turns in a bit of sunshine, it doesn't get much better than that! The wind has abated and it's not all that cold so it was a very pleasant day to be up on the mountain.
The snow is definitely getting deeper out there but the harder base can still be felt in some areas, especially those that were more wind affected. Still you should be able to find some bottomless turns out there.
Tomorrow is set to be a little milder and temps at village level may get a bit above freezing as a weak low approaches from the west. Once this system moves through to the east though it looks like some very cold air is on the way during the coming week. Snow is forecast to fall every day in the outlook and as the temperature drops it's just going to get drier, lighter and a whole lot deeper. Here's hoping for some neck deep turns by later in the week!

Avalanche Information:

Niseko Avalanche Info No.46

Moiwa base 6am: -7℃, 40cm of fresh snow yesterday evening, mostly none during the night.
Coastal data 6am: WNW 10m/s at Benkei cape, W9m/s 1.7m waves and 1013hp at Kamui cape.
Annupuri peak wind recorded a maximum speed of WSW41.7m/s at 22:30 last night, calmed down to NW12.7m/s, -13℃ at 6am.
Snowdrifts and cornices have drastically developed above 800m (up to 80cm in leeward slopes at 1000m) due to the strong storm.
Although the newly formed slabs are starting to stabilize, possibilities of 80cm surface slab avalanche is very high in knoll terrains. Higashi-one and Backbowl sidewalls are in extreme conditions. Predicted sliding layer is Jan 25th.
Peak gates are scheduled to open at 10:30.
The snow in the trees, below 1000m, is nice and deep.
Refrain from staying along the avalanche paths: the valley bottoms, and always ski one by one in order to minimize the risks.
Stay away from big open slopes and knolls in the morning.
Have you switched your beacon (avalanche transceiver) on?
