No new snow to report. And light rain (sleet higher up). Not the best start to a report that, is it?

Rewind a bit to yesterday though and we enjoyed some wonderfully clear skies and weather conditions.

Anyway, it is a rather warm morning in Niseko. Earlier on when I first got up, +1C and now +2C in the village and a high of around +4C possible. As of 7:30am, Niseko Village was reporting a temperature of -7C on it's upper slopes.

It's also windy and the winds are affecting lifts this morning. The top lift at Annupuri is closed early on and at Niseko Village the Niseko Gondola, Country Road and top Wonderland lifts are waiting on conditions. At the time of writing the lifts operating at Niseko Grand Hirafu are the Ace Family, Ace Number 1, Holiday Number 1 pair and King Number 2 lifts. Hopefully the Ace Number 2 Center Four will soon be moving. The gondola and other lifts are not open (yet) due to the windy conditions on mountain.

Probably best to check the resorts most recent lift information before heading out, though I think today some people may well decide to do other things and wait for the coming fresh snow.

Tomorrow I should hopefully have colder temperatures and some fresh snowfall to report, but there is a good chance that the strong winds will still be with us.

Avalanche Information:

Niseko base 6am: 0C, wet snowfall due to warm-front of approaching low-pressure. Costal data: SSW3m/s, 0.5m waves and 1010hPa. Moiwa peak: SW10m/s, -2C and whiteout. Annupuri 1000m: SW15m/s, whiteout.

Warm air is inflowing and wet snow is falling since 4am and forecasted to pick up as the next low-pressure system is approaching. Loose snow avalanche is very likely to occur in all altitude and orientation. The running speed of these avalanches are relatively slow, however are powerful enough to cause serious consequences. Todays snowfall (Dec 30th layer) will form a notable layer in the future snowpack. All gates above 800m will be closed. Do not duck ropes to step out of bounds.

Addressing to the group of about 20 people who traversed across the whole Backbowls sidewall (around 900m alt.) yesterday. You must learn basics of avalanche terrain before even considering riding that place. 20 people traversing that kind of steep slope is true absurdity, please realize it before you trigger a slide or it will be too late. We strongly demand all skiers/riders to stop this thoughtless style of skiing/riding. If you can't ski/ride the fall-line, you probably should refrain from skiing/riding that slope. Winter mountains are more dangerous than you think. Stay humble and better not overestimate your skills and/or experiences.

Beware of today's weather transition, a storm is approaching.
